There are people who actually think the Beatles suck, but they at least know who the Beatles are and a few songs they sang. Conversely, the common schlub like myself has no farking idea who this person is. How many album sales does it take to make the charts nowadays? A hundred?

And I've never heard of the guy until 37 seconds ago. Must be a real musical prodigy.

There appears to be a minor but important error in the article.  According to this article, the record she broke was most weeks in the UK top ten for a debut album. The Beatle' Please Please Me still has the record for spending 30 consecutive weeks at #1. I could find very good info on the records for most weeks in the top ten - most were lists for just being in the UK albums list which is the top 75.

Truth be told, we in the USA would've known who she is... if NBC hadn't cut a full segment out of the London 2012 opening ceremony for a Michael Phelps interview.

Ditto.  Also, I grew up listening to old Beatles albums (vinyl and cassette) and I don't remember this Please Please Me song at all.

. . . and after a consultation with Youtube, I realize the song was from the early days when the Beatles were just another shiatty MoTown derivative knockoff band.  It's not like this tranny is breaking a record held by something from Revolver or Rubber Soul.

I know the Fark headline says some guy but is that a guy?

1. No idea who this is.
2. The Beatles probably sold more records in the 60s than any artist has post-Napster.
3. It's about time, the Beatles are a 50 year old band.

There's a current running gag over here that if there's any kind of public event, be it a wedding to the open of a goddamn phone box, Emeli Sande will be there. There's overexposed and then there's how much she's been shoved down our throats for the last two years. She needs to go away for a while

So it's one of those artists that no one in the US knows but is the biggest thing in the UK? Well obviously according to the charts, but I thought I was enough of a music geek to know about someone like this, it's not like UK music is obscure here. Then again, this might be the time that this Pat starts making a name out here, being this is the fist time most the posters here have heard of her.

That's how these artists become popular these days.  It happened to a certain extent in the past, but now that's all it is.  Critics don't matter.  They just shove it down your throat everywhere you go until people get hooked and then think that they found the music naturally.

Case in point... I don't listen to the radio, ever, yet somehow I can name 3 or 4 Lady Gaga songs and sing some of the lyrics.  Same thing with adele, whom I hate.

The good news is that there is an impressive long tail of options out there due to the changing market so if I actually put in the effort I can find whatever music I do like on my own.

Yeah, not bad, but completely forgettable. It's something I'd think would be picked as the third song to play in the credits in your average chick flick.

And it's going to keep that record, until we get another superstar band to write a song encouraging teenage girls to reciprocate oral sex.

Rock and roll is all about getting more oral sex.  Period.

I like the Beatles but the song whos-his-her-face beat sucked anyway. Still, you'd like to see it beaten by someone we'll remember 15 minutes from now, instead she'll be some obscure music trivia question.

Yet again, it all comes back to how much NBC's Olympic coverage sucked royal ass.

As for the topic at hand: Records can come and go, but it will take something earth-shattering, especially in this musical climate we live in, to ever approach the title of "The Next Beatles."  Doesn't matter if they have their records or not; we're still talking about them, still hearing their music and their influence all over the music industry, 43 years and three weeks since Paul left the band.  I'll have to check back in that amount of time to see if Sande's got any influence at all on the world music scene before we can have this conversation yet again about yet another artist.
