Oh. Well shiat. I was on a train coming back from a competition I've been working to plan for weeks. Let's see how I did...

Got 6 of the 8 series right for Canada. Looks like CBC would rather have the champs than the Penguins. Who knew? As for start days, I didn't think anyone would get off until Thursday and I used 1995 as my guide with basically no series getting two days off between games (especially without travel), so my East was farked.

My handy-dandy quick-view Google 'sheet is being created now. Here it is (work in progress).

Great job. I followed along during the season and that's a damn interesting conclusion now that we're at the end of the season.

Well done!

Lets go Isles, I guess.
Kinda wanted the Blue Jackets to make it too, for Bob!

I think the Cup is headed back to California. Them Ducks are scary good.

Been going to college for 4 years in Melbourne, but Fark's Favorite State will cease to be my place of residence as of next week. Going back to Canuckistan for the time being, may come back down to FL for a job at some point.

Google 'sheet is done (for now). Went quicker than I thought. Some observations:

Suck it, Central time zone. St. Louis and Chicago hosting at 8:30 local time, so they can follow after a 7:00 ET game.
Only one NBC game on the first Saturday because of the Derby. Second weekend can only have an 12:00pm/12:30pm NBC game because of The PLAYERS Championship (golf).
Only two games on NHL Network!
Almost no one will get a rest day between Game 6 and Game 7. But how awesome would it be if we had six games, including four Game 7's on the same Sunday.

Thank you. I'm actually not surprised about San Jose's result in the revised system. It really penalizes too many shootouts, regardless of result. As I said yesterday, San Jose's position is really not a reflection of how poor they are. But they got a good match up with Vancouver as SJ won the season series 3-0 (only 1 went to a shootout). That's my only hesitation in picking VAN to win the series in 5 or 6.

Another bit I just caught with my revised system: Winnipeg and the Islanders each won 6 games that went beyond regulation. But because WPG won 4 OT games and 2 shootouts while NYI won 2 OTs and 4 SOs, WPG finished 2 pts ahead for the last playoff spot.

I was stunned that you got the VAN call correct. I really thought the CBC would've wanted it to give their #1 play caller home games (since he is a bit of a Vancouver homer). But well done.

Alright, I haven't been around for playoff hockey threads, but I might drop around this year for sh*ts and grins.  You seem alright around here, so let me ask (others feel free to advise as well): should I just block this guy?  I don't remember seeing him around yet, and I really hate blocking people.  (I've blocked one guy from the politics thread because I may break something otherwise, that's it.  I'm generally alright because what the hell, it's just Fark.) Is it amusing as all get out to watch him losing it, or not so much?

Trey and Matt understand Canada better than most people realize. And their portrayal of Canadian culture is spot-on:

Canada is full of polite, accommodating, eccentric flappy-headed people. Very nice and friendly.

However, there's always that ONE guy.......

I might take you guys up on that. I have family in Mobile, AL that I could visit. I know, it's not technically nearby, but I'm strategizing here.

This and this. Bruins had two chances to lock up the 2 seed.

After last year's first-round exit, I'm uneasy that we may see a repeat. They can't close the deal.

Worse is that the Leafs fans (and Bieber) will go Cup crazy.

Give us a little slack.  We've got 8 seasons of pent up frustration to get out.

I want nothing more from this playoffs but the Wings taking out the Disney Ducks.  I think they have a shot, though I don't take too much from what happened in the regular season series.

/I think I'll favorite everyone based on their team colors this year.  Rev.k, you're getting penguin yellow.

OL is annoying, but don't lump him in with that jackass who still celebrates the limo crash that paralyzed Konstantinov.

I'm just not hopeful about the Bruins' chances this year... I'll be surprised if they make it to the second round.

Sloppy play, uninspired, inability to hold onto a lead, and inability to overcome an aggressive two-man forecheck are not recipes for post-season success.

We'll see, anyway. Hope they at least make a series out of it.

That the Leafs are even in the playoffs is almost enough for this year.... It's been a long time coming.
But the way the B's have been playing there is a glimmer of round two off on the horizon.

2013-04-29 08:40:41 AM
The next 36 hours will be an eternity. STL will need to seriously change up their game plan, and I hope the Wild at least make it interesting, but not too much so.

Because it's the last year with DRW in our division/conference, WTF. Go Wings, for the first round only. Let's take out all of the west coast teams.

I'll be cheering the Bruins again in the East this year. Gloves are off if they end up against a central division team for the SCF though.

Also, welcome, ten foiled hats.

Tips, in case I miss the first actual playoff thread:

Pens in 5 (I really think the Isles can pull of an upset.  Once.)
Habs in 6 (serious respect to the Sens this year, but now we're back on our feet you're just not quite there)
Caps in 7 (good luck with that, Rags)
B's to sweep (all I'll say for this one: hopefully there'll be an Orr-Chára fight)

I have no farking clue about the West this year.  I blame the shortened season.  But hey, fark it, not like I ever pretended to be an expert:

Wild in oh who am I kidding, Hawks to sweep
Ducks in 5 (the Wings will pull one out for old time's sake)
Sharks in 6 (as a fan of a different Canadian team, I am forbidden by international law from taking the 'Nucks seriously)
Blues in 6 (because Halák.  Yes, I know he didn't make any difference last year against Quick this time, fark you, he's Halák)

Same here.
If you can't close games out, especially with a 2 goal leads into the 3rd, maybe it's just not your year.

Also, the P-Bruins better start Hutchinson on Sat.
Svedberg can't stop shiat, right now.

See everyone Thursday for Habs-Sens! 3 games in 4 nights is gonna be rough.

If I win the family hockey pool this year, the money is going to soon-to-be Mr. cyberbenali's bachelor party.

Rev.K: Also, that Luongo meltdown was fun to watch last night. Cheering for the Oilers is about the dirtiest thing I could do, but when Lou shat himself in the third period, I couldn't help but laugh.

I hope Vancouver's playoff opener is exactly like their season opener, with one, or even both goaltenders completely sh*tting the bed.

It's been frustrating to watch... Especially when they were so solid with a lead last year and the year before.

But the playoffs are upon us. Lots of hockey to be watch, so it's going to be fun regardless.

If the Bruins bow out early, here's a few teams I'd like to see go all the way and win the Cup: St. Louis, Islanders, or hell, even Toronto. Blackhawks are usually my Western Conf. back up team, usually, but I want to see a team who has never won the Cup or team that hasn't won it in a long time win it.

Of course, ideally, I'm hoping for a surprise from the Bruins... A Movie of the Week hockey story where Jagr, the aging super star digs deep and leads the team to a unexpected Cup win, beating out vastly more skilled and talented teams.

Not holding my breath , of course.

Let's go Bruins (and P-Bruins)!!

Don't forget the plucky foreigner, fresh from Sweden, ready to do anything to prove he can play in the NHL Post-Season
The over-hyped, six-year vet trying to prove he doesn't disappear in the play-offs and his contract was totally worth it.

2013-04-29 11:03:11 AM
If the wheels fall off for the Hawks now, I'd like to see any team other than Pittsburgh or Detroit win it all. But that won't be necessary - the Hawks are relatively healthy and have been playing with confidence all season. Plus, they just don't lose at home all that much, and I just don't see them dropping 2 home games in any one series.

2013-04-29 11:04:19 AM
Hmm...I'll already be in the Twin Cities this weekend...do I shell out the cash for a game 3 Hawks/Wild ticket?  Single seats are going for around $125.  Was at the game a few weeks back with these teams my ticket price was $100.

2013-04-29 11:18:23 AM
Hoping the Hawks don't take the Wild too lightly but I'm not too concerned. Hard to say who I want to win the Ducks/Wings series. I hate the Wings and their fans so it's always nice to see them disappoint with an early exit, but the Hawks match up better against them and it's always a fun playoff series.

Heh... No shiat. Though, I'm happy to see he's bringing a bit more physicality in the last few games. Brick pretty much nailed it a few games ago. When Lucic is involved in the game physically, that's when his offensive game really kicks in. Pretty decent bout with Neal last night, too.

Anyway, we'll see what they can pull out of their asses soon enough...

Soon.

Do eet. We went to the Hawks/Wild game on April 9th and had a fantastic time. I even said to my husband that we were witnessing a first round playoff matchup. Xcel is much mellower than the Madhouse: the Minnesota fans were pleasant (for now) to Chicago fans and are passionate about their hockey.

Get a Loon brat or the walleye basket, both are delicious.

2013-04-29 12:06:13 PM
OK, now that I'm not working with 4 spreadsheets and going over bizarre playoff scenarios and can actually look at the match ups, my thoughts:

Chicago vs Minnesota- I think the Wild have underachieved this year, but that's probably due to the lockout and short season more than anything. But Chicago has just been too good. Hawks in 5

Anaheim vs Detroit- Can both teams lose? Seriously, the Ducks have seemed to stumble a bit while the Wings have gotten hot. I hope I'm wrong here but  Wings in 7

Vancouver vs San Jose- I've been saying it for the last month: San Jose is a fraud. If you take out their shootout record, they're a sub-.500 team at 17-19 (including their 0-3 overtime record). But the Sharks went 3-0 against the Canucks and only 1 of those games went to a shootout. That makes me very hesitant to pick  Canucks in 7 but I'm doing it, albeit with zero confidence. But if the Sharks get knocked out in 4 or 5, I'll be saying "told you they were a fraud."

St. Louis vs Los Angeles- First of all, if the Kings go on another run like they did last year; that would be a statistical improbability along the lines of someone winning the lottery with the numbers 1-2-3-4-5-6. That would be just asinine to even consider. But they are the better team here even though the Blues seem to be getting it together at the right time.  Kings in 6

Pittsburgh vs NY Islanders- The Isles are probably a year ahead of schedule while the Pens are just dominant.  Penguins in 5

Montreal vs Ottawa- I don't know if anyone really expected either team here for different reasons. The Habs because I don't think anyone really thought they were that good before the season. The Sens because of their injury troubles. But here they are in the easiest travel situation possible, with about 100 miles between the cities. And I literally have no clue who to pick here. Random guess:  Montreal in 7

Washington vs NY Rangers- Well, this should be interesting. They know each other well. They've both played much better over the past month than they did to start the season. A really tough call here but I'll take Capitals in 7. But again, I have no confidence here.

Boston vs Toronto- This looks to be a lot closer than I first thought it could be. The Leafs might be a touch underrated and I think the Bruins have slipped a bit, albeit some of that might be due to how farked their schedule was over the past couple of weeks with postponed games and all. Ultimately, I think the Bruins are the better team and with something resembling a routine again, they should improve.  Bruins in 7

Stanley Cup Final prediction:  Pittsburgh over Chicago in 7 games. I think we're just destined for those two to meet for the Cup.

2013-04-29 12:41:37 PM
Chicago in 5. Anaheim in 6. Vancouver in 7. Los Angeles in 5.

Pittsburgh in 6. Ottawa in 7. Washington in 6. Toronto in 7.

2013-04-29 05:14:57 PM
Chicago in 6
Ducks in 7
St. Louis in 5
'Nucks in 6

Pitt in 4
Montreal in 6
Boston in 6
Caps in 5
