Serious playoffs implications: If the Bruins lose to the Senators they will place the fifth-seeded Leafs. If the Bruins win they will clinch the Northeast Division and Toronto with play the Habs. As a Leafs fan, I'm pulling for the Bruins.

/1-0 Sens in the 2nd

Also, with a tie the B's jump up, as does Ottawa, so you guys would stay the same, but we'd have Ottawa at the seventh slot.

NO, SIR!  I'd actually just clicked the thread when Ottawa scored their second.  So I posted a "LET'S GO BRUINS!", got the f*ck out, and lo, the B's lit the lamp.  So I'm gonna post one more and GTFO.  Might see y'all/youse after the game.

My predictions on the Canadian series draft to see what network get what series:
1 & 2 (CBC): MTL-OTT, TOR-BOS
3 (TSN): VAN-SJS
4 (CBC): PIT-NYI
5 (TSN): WAS-NYR
6 (CBC): CHI-MIN
7 & 8 (TSN): STL-LAK, ANA-DET

Still looking up arena conflicts before I try to map out the schedule, but here's my predicted start dates:
MIN @ CHI: Wednesday (CHI can't host Game 2 Thursday)
DET @ ANA: Tuesday (ANA can't host Wednesday)
SJS @ VAN: Wednesday (SJ can't host Game 3 Saturday)
LAK @ STL: Tuesday (LA can't host Game 3 Sunday)
NYI @ PIT: Tuesday (for balance)
OTT @ MTL: Wednesday (give Ottawa two days break)
NYR @ WAS: Tuesday (for balance)
TOR @ BOS: Wednesday (give Boston two days break)

out west I expect a Tuesday start for DET @ ANA and LAK @ STL and a Wednesday start for MIN @ CHI and VAN @ SJS.

2013-04-28 10:28:28 PM
Pittsburgh would've run roughshod over Ottawa or NYR.  Isles are toughest draw for Pens.  Young, fast talented team with quality goaltending.  They'll be playing with house money.  Dangerous.

Also...
TOR-BOS

Game 1 Wed
Game 2 Sat

...That's all I caught, since I'm now pretty excited I can watch Game 1. Thought it'd be on Tuesday. (Saturday's probably out, as with any luck, I'll be our drinking after graduation.)

The observe part was possibly one of the most importantly funny hockey posts of the last 5 years.

Because I need a place for this...

The final NHL alternate points systems standings

1st, a note: I projected a minimum points number for each conference that would be necessary to make the playoffs this year. Because the average points total for the #8 seed in each conference in the shootout era was markedly different, the numbers in each conference was different. It was 53 pts for the East and 55 for the West. Well, the 8 seed in each conference ended up at 55 pts. Technically I was right in the East since the 9th place team (Winnipeg) ended up at 51 pts. And in the West, Columbus tied with Minnesota at 55 pts.

Forgive me for tooting my own horn for a bit.

Some bests and worsts of the season:

Most regulation wins: Pittsburgh- 31
Highest regulation win percentage: Chicago- .781 (25-7)

Most OT wins (non-SO games): Chicago and Columbus- 5 each (Chicago was 5-0)
Most games decided in OT: Columbus and Colorado- 8 (CBJ 5-3, COL 3-5)

Most Shootout games and wins: San Jose- 12 total, 8 wins
Most Shootout losses: New Jersey- 7 losses (2 wins)

Most OT losses (non-SO): Colorado and Florida- 5 (FLA 1-5)

Most regulation losses: Florida- 27

Fewest regulation wins: Florida, Nashville and Colorado- 11
Fewest OT (non-SO) wins: San Jose- 0-3
Fewest SO wins: Calgary and Toronto- 0 (CGY 0-3, TOR 0-5)

Total games decided in OT: 66 (35 in the West)
Total games decided in a shootout: 96 (55 in the West)

Comparison of points systems:

International 3 pt system- all 16 playoff teams are the same. Nine teams change positions, none of them division winners. Interestingly, the 4-5 matchups are the same (though flip home ice between LA and STL)

Revised 3 pt system- 14 of the 16 playoff teams make it. Division winners the same. San Jose drops out (too many shootouts) and Columbus comes in. Winnipeg and NY Islanders flip spots. (Note: for those who don't know, under this system last season; 15 of the 16 teams made it and the one that didn't lost on a tiebreaker since they couldn't take the very last game of the season to a shootout. That team? LA Kings)

Old NHL rules w/ties- See above, but with the exception that NYI drops to 10th and WPG goes to 7th. Oh, and Toronto wins the Northeast and the 2 seed.

(Thank god that's over)

Got 6 of the 8 series right for Canada. Looks like CBC would rather have the champs than the Penguins. Who knew? As for start days, I didn't think anyone would get off until Thursday and I used 1995 as my guide with basically no series getting two days off between games (especially without travel), so my East was farked.

Google 'sheet is done (for now). Went quicker than I thought. Some observations:

Suck it, Central time zone. St. Louis and Chicago hosting at 8:30 local time, so they can follow after a 7:00 ET game.
Only one NBC game on the first Saturday because of the Derby. Second weekend can only have an 12:00pm/12:30pm NBC game because of The PLAYERS Championship (golf).
Only two games on NHL Network!
Almost no one will get a rest day between Game 6 and Game 7. But how awesome would it be if we had six games, including four Game 7's on the same Sunday.

Thank you. I'm actually not surprised about San Jose's result in the revised system. It really penalizes too many shootouts, regardless of result. As I said yesterday, San Jose's position is really not a reflection of how poor they are. But they got a good match up with Vancouver as SJ won the season series 3-0 (only 1 went to a shootout). That's my only hesitation in picking VAN to win the series in 5 or 6.

Another bit I just caught with my revised system: Winnipeg and the Islanders each won 6 games that went beyond regulation. But because WPG won 4 OT games and 2 shootouts while NYI won 2 OTs and 4 SOs, WPG finished 2 pts ahead for the last playoff spot.

I was stunned that you got the VAN call correct. I really thought the CBC would've wanted it to give their #1 play caller home games (since he is a bit of a Vancouver homer). But well done.

I'm just not hopeful about the Bruins' chances this year... I'll be surprised if they make it to the second round.

Sloppy play, uninspired, inability to hold onto a lead, and inability to overcome an aggressive two-man forecheck are not recipes for post-season success.

We'll see, anyway. Hope they at least make a series out of it.

That the Leafs are even in the playoffs is almost enough for this year.... It's been a long time coming.
But the way the B's have been playing there is a glimmer of round two off on the horizon.

Tips, in case I miss the first actual playoff thread:

Pens in 5 (I really think the Isles can pull of an upset.  Once.)
Habs in 6 (serious respect to the Sens this year, but now we're back on our feet you're just not quite there)
Caps in 7 (good luck with that, Rags)
B's to sweep (all I'll say for this one: hopefully there'll be an Orr-Chára fight)

I have no farking clue about the West this year.  I blame the shortened season.  But hey, fark it, not like I ever pretended to be an expert:

Wild in oh who am I kidding, Hawks to sweep
Ducks in 5 (the Wings will pull one out for old time's sake)
Sharks in 6 (as a fan of a different Canadian team, I am forbidden by international law from taking the 'Nucks seriously)
Blues in 6 (because Halák.  Yes, I know he didn't make any difference last year against Quick this time, fark you, he's Halák)

It's been frustrating to watch... Especially when they were so solid with a lead last year and the year before.

But the playoffs are upon us. Lots of hockey to be watch, so it's going to be fun regardless.

If the Bruins bow out early, here's a few teams I'd like to see go all the way and win the Cup: St. Louis, Islanders, or hell, even Toronto. Blackhawks are usually my Western Conf. back up team, usually, but I want to see a team who has never won the Cup or team that hasn't won it in a long time win it.

Of course, ideally, I'm hoping for a surprise from the Bruins... A Movie of the Week hockey story where Jagr, the aging super star digs deep and leads the team to a unexpected Cup win, beating out vastly more skilled and talented teams.

Not holding my breath , of course.

Let's go Bruins (and P-Bruins)!!

If the wheels fall off for the Hawks now, I'd like to see any team other than Pittsburgh or Detroit win it all. But that won't be necessary - the Hawks are relatively healthy and have been playing with confidence all season. Plus, they just don't lose at home all that much, and I just don't see them dropping 2 home games in any one series.

Hmm...I'll already be in the Twin Cities this weekend...do I shell out the cash for a game 3 Hawks/Wild ticket?  Single seats are going for around $125.  Was at the game a few weeks back with these teams my ticket price was $100.

Hoping the Hawks don't take the Wild too lightly but I'm not too concerned. Hard to say who I want to win the Ducks/Wings series. I hate the Wings and their fans so it's always nice to see them disappoint with an early exit, but the Hawks match up better against them and it's always a fun playoff series.

I should say potential playoff series ^.

soopey: It'll be a fun two weeks. Time to make some bad photoshop alterations to Leafs propaganda at lunch time.

I've made you a meme in advance as a peace offering.

/Oh, who am I kidding. "Leafs suck" memes are still hilarious.

Primitive Screwhead:
The over-hyped, six-year vet trying to prove he doesn't disappear in the play-offs and his contract was totally worth it.

Heh... No shiat. Though, I'm happy to see he's bringing a bit more physicality in the last few games. Brick pretty much nailed it a few games ago. When Lucic is involved in the game physically, that's when his offensive game really kicks in. Pretty decent bout with Neal last night, too.

Anyway, we'll see what they can pull out of their asses soon enough...

Soon.

Do eet. We went to the Hawks/Wild game on April 9th and had a fantastic time. I even said to my husband that we were witnessing a first round playoff matchup. Xcel is much mellower than the Madhouse: the Minnesota fans were pleasant (for now) to Chicago fans and are passionate about their hockey.

Get a Loon brat or the walleye basket, both are delicious.

OK, now that I'm not working with 4 spreadsheets and going over bizarre playoff scenarios and can actually look at the match ups, my thoughts:

Chicago vs Minnesota- I think the Wild have underachieved this year, but that's probably due to the lockout and short season more than anything. But Chicago has just been too good. Hawks in 5

Anaheim vs Detroit- Can both teams lose? Seriously, the Ducks have seemed to stumble a bit while the Wings have gotten hot. I hope I'm wrong here but  Wings in 7

Vancouver vs San Jose- I've been saying it for the last month: San Jose is a fraud. If you take out their shootout record, they're a sub-.500 team at 17-19 (including their 0-3 overtime record). But the Sharks went 3-0 against the Canucks and only 1 of those games went to a shootout. That makes me very hesitant to pick  Canucks in 7 but I'm doing it, albeit with zero confidence. But if the Sharks get knocked out in 4 or 5, I'll be saying "told you they were a fraud."

St. Louis vs Los Angeles- First of all, if the Kings go on another run like they did last year; that would be a statistical improbability along the lines of someone winning the lottery with the numbers 1-2-3-4-5-6. That would be just asinine to even consider. But they are the better team here even though the Blues seem to be getting it together at the right time.  Kings in 6

Pittsburgh vs NY Islanders- The Isles are probably a year ahead of schedule while the Pens are just dominant.  Penguins in 5

Montreal vs Ottawa- I don't know if anyone really expected either team here for different reasons. The Habs because I don't think anyone really thought they were that good before the season. The Sens because of their injury troubles. But here they are in the easiest travel situation possible, with about 100 miles between the cities. And I literally have no clue who to pick here. Random guess:  Montreal in 7

Washington vs NY Rangers- Well, this should be interesting. They know each other well. They've both played much better over the past month than they did to start the season. A really tough call here but I'll take Capitals in 7. But again, I have no confidence here.

Boston vs Toronto- This looks to be a lot closer than I first thought it could be. The Leafs might be a touch underrated and I think the Bruins have slipped a bit, albeit some of that might be due to how farked their schedule was over the past couple of weeks with postponed games and all. Ultimately, I think the Bruins are the better team and with something resembling a routine again, they should improve.  Bruins in 7

Stanley Cup Final prediction:  Pittsburgh over Chicago in 7 games. I think we're just destined for those two to meet for the Cup.

Hawks in 5 (Wild just happy to be here. Hawks will take one off to rest and they'll want to win at home)
Wings in 7 (experience > youth). Alternatively: Ducks in 5 (fark experience)
Kings in 7 (every game will be a coin flip. They trade 1-0 wins to the end. It is the most boring hockey ever played)
Canucks in 6 (the Sharks aren't even technically a playoff team. The Canucks only lose to the Stanley Cup Champions and that ain't the Sharks)

Pens in 4 (Hi Isles! Bye Isles!)
Habs/Sens in 7 (can't make up my mind)
Rags in 6 (Despite Ovechkin returning to form, the playoffs are a different beast that he hasn't quite figured out yet)
Bruins in 3 (Leaf Nation will make this happen somehow. The worst thing to happen to the Leafs are the Leafs)

Maybe that is not Ovs fault? He has 30 goals 29 assists in 51 playoff games. What more can they guy do?

Add Ov KHL and NHL totals for the year and it looks like this

79 GP. 51 goals, 45 assists, 96 points.

He never lost his form. So all of you mike milbury looking farkers can shut up about it

At least it didn't take long for the Canucks hate to start up again.
