zenobia: Not a lot of talk in Derpistan, that I could find. This was caught my eye, though:

I found the following statements by Spielberg, occurring between the 0.17 and 0.25 marks in the video, to be particularly interesting:

... I mean - Who is Obama really? We don't know. We never got his transcripts and they say he's kind of aloof. ...

His remark about Obama refusing to provide his college transcripts, as requested by Trump and others, is certainly significant. It's also a bit puzzling as well because this entire video was obviously pre-cleared for showing at the event by the Obama Administration.

That is sincerely hilarious.

cptjeff: stoli n coke: ultraholland: Because People in power are Stupid: That makeup is amazing.

I guess black-face is acceptable when done by such a reputable performer as Daniel Day Lewis.

Hey, if Heath Ledger hadn't died, Robert Downey Jr. would have an Oscar for performing in blackface.

Heath Ledger would have won if he hadn't committed suicide, too. I

Two outrageous nominations in one year?  Nah.  Despite the brilliance, there is no way they'd give it to Downey Jr for a Stiller comedy and Ledger for a comic book movie without one of them dying.  The Academy hates comic book movies more than it hates Hollywood sort-of blue-bloods(Downey and Stiller)

I doubt he'd be a Freeper, but he'd definitely be jerking it to Sarah Palin pics. Franklin had an intense GILF fixation.

I assume this is a joke, but since I've seen a couple rants online about "Why are we paying the president and his journalist lapdogs to booze it up WHEN WHITE HOUSE TOURS WERE CUT!?!?", so I'll just point out that The White House Correspondents' Association is a private organization and as such the event doesn't cost a penny of the federal budget.

To be fair, GILFS in his time were usually in their late 20s

Watch the video. Even though I question a lot of what has happened and is happening under this administration,
 Obama is pretty cool.

// hated Bush for his looking for WMD jokes at the same event.

This is how political comedy works.

Notice the lack of shiat/piss/abortion jokes.

And if only one of Ledger or Downey was going to get a nomination absent one of them dying, it wasn't going to be Robert Downey Jr. Heath Ledger was getting the Oscar that year, and everyone on the planet knew it.

Ledger got an extra push after dying because the Academy felt guilty for not giving him Best Actor for Brokeback Mountain, which he probably deserved. While his performance in Dark Knight was good, had he lived, given Hollywood's attitude towards superhero movies, he might have gotten a nomination, a la Pacino in Dick Tracy, but not much more.

Even in Academy fare, by and large, villain performances get nominated, but don't often win. If Daniel Day Lewis couldn't win for playing the villain in Gangs of New York and Ralph Fiennes got shut out for playing the villain in Schindler's List, Ledger wasn't going to stand a chance. They would have waited until he turned in a more awards appropriate role to give him his statue. Granted that changed with Christoph Waltz a year later, but that was likely voters being impressed by an actor doing a role in 4 languages. (Foreign languages are also an awards booster shot, like DeNiro in Godfather II and Benicio Del Toro in Traffic.)

Downey would have won for 3 reasons. 1. Repentant fallen star rising from the ashes. Hollywood loves redemption stories, 2. Performed in an extremely risky role that could have killed his comeback with one little slip, and 3. Starred in a movie that was basically Hollywood making fun of itself, and you saw with Argo how self-congratulatory Hollywood is. Tropic Thunder was basically Hollywood saying "See how ridiculous we can be! Even we have a sense of humor about it!"
