Nah...he's just confused on both ends of the spectrum.

On one hand, his life simply has to be farking miserable. I don't think he's a hypocrite, I think he's just been mind-farked by his parents and pastors.

On the other he's doubling up the mind-farking of hundreds (thousands?) of other gay men who were mind-farked by their parents and pastors.

/mind-farking.

I'm guessing that:

1. He was gay, and expressed his feelings to those he trusted, i.e. parents, religious leaders.

2. They were horrified and told him that he could be "cured".

3. Like most people, he wanted to fit in and be accepted by them, so he believed them and really tried.

4. He ended up in denial.

5. And then after years of torturing himself over it, came out again.

Is it really his fault if he was deceived and emotionally abused by those he trusted and loved?

"I feel great sorrow over the pain that has been caused when my words were misconstrued."

Misconstrued?  Fark you.  Fark you hard.  You know what you said, and what you meant, and you wanted people to take that advice.  You have damaged a hell of a lot of people.  And the ripple effect on their families has damaged even more.

You had the opportunity to be a beacon of light, instead, you spread darkness.

And now instead of trying to make it right, you'rehiding behind parsed words and living a low-key lifestyle under the radar.

Fark you hard for the trail of sorrow you have shamelessly left in your wake.

This was the same guy who "accidentally" walked into a gay bar in DC and tried to awkwardly pick up guys before he was recognized. His Seymour Skinner-ish "I was only there asking for directions on how to get away from there" excuse was a classic.

Fark this guy. How many suicides, broken families and scarred lives has he directly caused with his hypocrisy?

I feel bad for folks like this. Because they have been mentally abused for years to the point of hating themselves, and any sexual feelings that they have, and oddly enough, this rage, rage, rage against the night has to come out somewhere, so it leaks throughout the rest of their lives, and worse, they are then supposed to be these paragons of virtue who "beat" their "disease" and forced into the arms of someone that they might actually like, but can never truly love, and it is just so damned sad. Yes, their DERP is damaging, yes, it is hypocritical, and deluded, but at the heart of these stories, are folks who are deeply damaged, and then used by the very folks who damaged them as their poster children for "curing" something that isn't a damn disease in the first place. It is all around a sad, sad, sad tale...

Eh, if people are gay and don't want to be, and want to take a stab at hypnotizing themselves into straightness, they're welcome to have a go at it.  I've certainly seen people try to do weirder shiat and not gotten in the way, and sometimes you're confused and just need to work your shiat out.   I've only got an issue with it when "voluntary" has a big old set of sarcasm quotes around it.  Anyone going all intervention-style to force someone into "rehab" over sexual orientation is someone I hope dies in a fire.

The people actually running the camps are usually true believers, so the fire is unnecessary for them.  A quick, clean double-tap to efficiently remove them from the gene pool and avert the horrifying possibility of them being given charge of the raising of a living human being if they manage to trick themselves into reproducing is all that's needed there.  It's for the children, you see.

I hate to Godwin this thread, but Paulk is like a Jew that ratted out his Hebrew brothers to the Nazis and enjoyed the meager scraps thrown to him while the people he sold out were getting dragged to the gas chambers. Wasn't a scared little kid in the closet - he was a grown man who knew that he was selling a lie, and made a profit while actual scared teens paid the price for it.

Now Paulk wants to have his cake and eat it too. Not so fast, Johnny! His words carry little weight when balanced against his actions. I won't be convinced that he's truly sorry until he starts to make amends for the damage he caused, like publicly speaking out against ex-gay therapy, or joining the effort to stop the bullying and suicide of gay teens.

He's just gay again for the extra holidays, the parades, the ice cream and desserts, and of course, the free tickets to musicals.

I agree with this 100000000% but it will never happen. It's just too embarrassing for him to do. He spent a large part of his adult life living in denial and telling others they should do the same, and now its just too damn shameful for him to come out in public and admit how stupid we all knew he was. He would rather us just accept this "apology" and know how deeply, truly sad he is that this inconvenienced his life for so long. He doesn't give a shiat about all the other people he has hurt by spreading around this bullshiat, he just wants everyone to forget he was ever involved so he can live the lifestyle he tried to take away from so many others.

2013-04-28 07:20:57 PM
Like others here, I wish I could feel sorry for him for all of the psychological destruction he's gone through. But I can't because he himself helped promote the psychological destruction of many others. He needs to own up for the errors of his previous ways before earning any real sympathy.

Sid_6.7: Is it really his fault if he was deceived and emotionally abused by those he trusted and loved?

I believe you're confusing fault with responsibility. Is it his fault that his upbringing and guidance was the way it was? No. Is he responsible for his words and actions? Yes.

2013-04-28 07:22:19 PM

I am torn on these kind of guys. On one hand they are dickholes. On the other hand, how horrible to live your life just hating yourself this much just because you were brainwashed at a young age and can't shake it.

Barfmaker: Is he responsible for his words and actions? Yes.

So, if someone is raised in an environment in which they are only exposed to certain kinds of ideas, you might expect them to suddenly discard those entirely, and they are to blame if they do not do so? Is that what you're saying?

That's it exactly. This isn't a heartfelt apology - Paulk just got tired of trolling for cock on the Down Low and thinks that saying "Oops, my bad!" will give him a free pass to knob-gobble with reckless abandon.

The people involved in situations like this do tend to be somewhat tragic figures. I pity them because of the disparity between their sexuality and the world view they've adopted that teaches them to condemn what comes naturally to them. It's very sad watching some of these folks engage in self-loathing when talking in "reformed homosexual" groups. That Donnie Davies and the Evening Service band / Love God's Way ministry from a few years ago was a great satire of "reformed homosexual" ministries in that portrayed how absurd, bigoted, and generally awful such movements were. Here's the Love God's Way video for those who haven't seen it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MRWqlf_8M8  I remember there also being a follow-up video portrayed as a fake news story in which Davies was caught reverting back to his former homosexual lifestyle, but it either no longer appears to be on YouTube or my memory is failing me.

Yeah so this guy farked up a lot of people's lives with his teachings, but that's probably because people farked up his life first.  He undoubtedly grew up hearing that if he wanted to be gay, he would burn in hell forever.  Messed up people mess people up.

Just because a rapist was the victim of rape himself doesn't mean that he gets carte blanche to get away with it. There's a lot of gay people that were raised in an environment that constantly that told them they were abominations destined for Hell, but 99% of them didn't make a profit of spreading such backwards thinking.

^^This^^

So much pain created and perpetuated and the perpetrators are as much victims as they are victimizers. The real culprit here is the fundamentalism that denies human nature. I may be wrong, but are there any groups that seek to "cure" homosexuality that are not based on religion? While not religious myself, I am glad to see the Anglicans and Unitarians embrace homosexuals with open arms and loving hearts. Hopefully that trend will spread to other faiths and denominations (though, as an ex-mormon, I have trouble seeing that).

That stupid puke hypocrite traitor? He got caught in gay bars in Columbus when he was still saying he was "cured" and that others should pray away their gay just like he did. He's a disgrace to the human race. But at least he got his 20 pieces of silver from the religionists.

Judas got 30.  Do you get less for being gay?

Only a gay person in denial could realistically think that you choose to be straight.

I'm sorry, but Jesus and religion doesn't keep me from sucking some dude's cock. Not being turned on by it is what keeps the dick out of my mouth. For me, simply thinking that being gay is a choice makes me think that you are at the very least secretly bi, because in my personal experience straight people simply DON'T have those confusing desires to struggle with in the first place. It's all pretty straightforward for us.
