I wonder what would happen if I put "Dr. Condoleeza Rice NRO" into Google?

Oh, this:

They probably didn't know that "Doctor" doesn't necessarily mean "Medical Doctor"

People with PhDs often use the Dr. title, why is this news?

Wait, he's pissed off that she calls herself "doctor," even though the quoted instances of her using it are in regards to education issues, the field she has her doctorate in?

Someone tangentially related to Obama (in this case, is right-hand man's wife) is such a person.

/remember, these are the same people who were genuinely furious over the fact that Obama wore blue jeans to a baseball game

If you don't have a prescription pad I am not calling you doctor. And I'll laugh in your face if you insist otherwise.

This is clearly a damning indictment of the entire Obama regime!  I assume Darrell Issa has scheduled impeachment hearings?

I don't remember Lynne Cheney going around insisting that everyone call her Dr. Cheney.  Makes you sound self-important when you do that.  That's the way I see it, anyways.

I'm currently working on my doctorate in astronomy (yes I will call myself Dr. Andromeda when it's an appropriate setting once I have it, as I will have earned it), and one of my friends who recently had a mix-up with his diploma and got one actually proclaiming him a M.D. instead of a PhD.

I thought it was a shame he returned it to get it fixed because he'd be the only scientist I know who wouldn't have to explain that he's not that kind of doctor.

She's entitled to call herself that, she earned the appropriate degree.

Someone's flawed perception doesn't change reality.

Everyone is entitled to be addressed how they wish, so long as it's commensurate with their position. If she wants to be called Dr. Biden, she's earned it. In fact, I think it's pretty disrespectful to call her anything else until she grants permission. If you don't want to stand on formality with your own title, that's your business, but if someone else wants to, respect the title.

Who cares?  If you've earned the title, you have the right to use it.  If that makes people feel inferior, let them earn their own damn PhD's.

Yes, why should people who invest 4 years in undergraduate work, and then 4-6 years in graduate school leading to a doctorate and then several more years in post-doc work even think they have the right be called "doctor"?

Yeah, people call people with doctorates "doctor".

That's how people with doctorates in medicine got the title, too.

Stupid people think there is only one kind of doctor (Wait, dentists are doctors?). What makes this special is that we have a columnist defending this sort of stupidity.

I wonder how many NRO readers will rage at this, then turn on "Dr." Laura Schlessinger (Ph.D. in phisiology, but it's close to psychology, and that's what counts, right?) and believe every word she says because she's a doctor?

/Or are creationists and listen to "Dr." Kent Hovind (fake doctorate from a Christian diploma mill), "Dr." Don Patton (fake doctorate from Australian diploma mill), and "Dr." Carl Baugh (fake doctorate from diploma mill he himself created for the purpose of giving himself a doctorate) as though they were experts on the subjects they rail against.

More class warfare from the libbos at NRO.  Just because someone has worked hard and achieved in life, libs want to tear them down.  The real lib plan is to make us all equals just like Mao wanted.

So sad.  I'll pray for you, libs.

The response to that, from TFA:

"It's somewhat by chance that the recipients of Ph.D.s may even presume to call themselves "doctors," the unfortunate product of a thousand-year-old liberal-arts tradition's being seized upon by technocratic Prussians in the age of Bismarck, transformed into a paradigm of German authoritarian efficiency, and then exported back into Western faculties, including many in which it simply does not belong."

That is some weapons-grade derp right there.

2013-04-28 04:08:48 PM
Did this person go to college?  Because I went through college calling all my professors "Doctor".  Because they have doctorates, and that's their title.  But if the Vice President's wife gets the same treatment as college professors because she has the same degree as them?  OUTRAGE!

//Maybe NRO should just start reporting when they're NOT outraged about something?  Might save some time...

2013-04-28 04:09:31 PM
I believe doctor has been used as an academic title since roman times.  Long before modern medicine.  But yeah go on with that derp.

It's actually an ed doc, not a PhD.  If she wants to have her junior college students call her Dr. Biden, that's fine.  But it sounds pompous for her to insist that everyone call her that, as if having an ed doc makes someone a big shot.

Here's an article by the SAME AUTHOR that cites a "Dr. Lee Dickinson", who is an engineer. I guess Charles Cooke's criterion for whether you can use the title "doctor" or not is whether he can cite you in support of his bullshiat.
