magicgoo: Wait, wait. Which chick are we supposed to be paying more attention to? Skyday or Vivisection?

True "nerd" females are so very rare. A geek chick wouldn't dress as slutty Hermione or bandaged Leeloo or slave Leia. Way too overdone. Way too boring. Way too mainstream. Way too easy. Let's see, for once in our lives, a chick dress as the Baron Harkonnen or Jabba or Ben Grimm or Eowyn in full armor or Robocop or Thrall or a Xenomorph or flight-suit Ripley or Ripley in a power loader built by said chick. Let's see a female not rely on her tits for nerds' attention, but on her knowledge of all things games/sci-fi/comics/fantasy/etc. That'd be effing sexy as eff: To be out-nerded by a chick who is a true fan of something that her boyfriend didn't tell her to like; to have a quality costume so amazing, it'd not be the amount of skin showing that draws attention to it, but the very intricacies in design that only a real fan could passionately create.

Screw it. Never mind. Those girls don't exist. Onward with the boring attention whore-off between two socialites who can't come up with anything more creative than what has been done a billion times.

I took two weeks off for this, but I was only able to acquire Thursday and Sunday tickets.  It seems like there is enough off-site crap going on that there might still be something to do and make it worth to go downtown on the other days.  What am I going to do for the rest of those 2 weeks?  There's only so many times I can go see Pacific Rim...
Also, I'll be the fat, pale white guy, might be dressed as this guy: http://www.tchikitahman.com/

What do these gatherings of undressed intelligent people with temporary self-esteem surfeits smell like?
I would imagine a mix of vaginitis and energy drink but am open to the possibility that there could be floral undertones.

I'll be taking my 13YO daughter to Comic-con this year, which will be the first time for both of us.  When she first asked, I had no idea what Comic-con was, and figured "how many people are going to want to go to a comics convention", and booked a hotel and plane tickets 9 months before the event to save money, only to be shut out of the 1st round of ticket sales.  With some luck and hard work I *just* got two tickets, so the trip is on!

She wants to go as a Homestuck troll but can't decide which one.  The only character I'm suited to cosplay is this guy, which is only because every middle-aged, bald-headed, goatee'd guy with metal rimmed glasses looks the same to most people.

Jim_Callahan:

Um... you realize the point was to sell comics in 1994 too, right?

Not anymore. It's all about Hollywood hyping their latest TV shows, like Hawaii 5-0 (yes, they actually had a freakin' Hawaii 5-0 panel at comic con. DAFUQ?).

2013-07-04 09:18:47 AM

No Line For Beer: No one "ruined" Comic-con.  The goal even back when it was still the Golden State Comic-con was always to have Hollywood involved.  The entire point is to have an all-inclusive entertainment convention where for a short time at least comics can take the same stage with television and movies (and now games).  It may not seem like a big deal now (and no small part of that accomplishment goes to SDCC), but at one time it was unthinkable for big stars and studios to associate themselves with the lowly comic book industry.

Again, Hawaii 5-0 panels at comic con.

Again, DAFUQ??

I don't understand most of what's happening in this thread except that evidently the host of the Comic-Con Fark Party didn't get tickets to Comic-Con.

2013-07-04 10:05:38 AM
Wow, there seems to be a lot of resentment here. I've never been able to go to the SDCC as it is in another country on the other side of North America, but it is something I would love to do someday.

Until then, there's always Fan Expo here in Toronto for me.

What drives me nuts is reading all the anti-cosplayer posts. If someone cares enough about somethig to dress up as it, I say more power to them. I've always said If I could find the time to build a Proton pack, I would Cosplay a Ghostbuster in a heartbeat!

To those going to SDCC have a blast!

And if anyone is going to the Toronto Fan Expo in August, well let me know!

Well if the pictures you post (constantly) are any indication you have moved to a digital form of attention whoring where you must prove you regularly eat those cupcakes and like to wear all of the make up at once. Every time I think I want to go to a Fark party in San Diego I come to one of these threads where 30% or more of the posts are you and I imagine how much it would suck to spend five minutes in a room listening to you prattle on let alone maintain my sanity long enough to finish a beer. Your language or framework choices should be based on the needs of the project, not necessarily on your specfic proficiency or inclination. Java might well be a perfectly good hammer, but not every project is a nail. The same can most certainly be said of VB.NET. Out of the things you listed above I've used every single one at one time or another. I really hate RoR, (mostly the Ruby part), but I actually liked Grails quite a bit. I like PHP a lot, mostly just the benefits of scripted over compiled and type agnosticism, but I didn't have much use for Symfony. Drupal, on the other hand, I've used in close to a dozen different projects ranging from simple websites (Home, Contact Us, About), to content rich and complex multi-context sites, but it has it's limits as well (at least if you want to stay within Drupal standards).

Curious if you're stuck using VB.NET because that happens to be the language of the current project or if it's just what you're most familiar with.

Up in MN at Convergence I've met women with movie-accurate storm trooper suits. Couldn't tell they were women until they spoke. I've seen some women with really technical and mechanically elaborate costumes as well. Again, frequently couldn't tell thy were women until they spoke.

Yeah, they're my designs/art. I don't specialize in costumes, although I've sketched up quite a few designs I plan to work on one day when I've got the time.
