If your family ever had AOL, check to make sure your parents' credit card isn't still being charged.

Britney Spear's Speculum: If your family ever had AOL, check to make sure your parents' credit card isn't still being charged.

yah I've heard a disturbingly high amount of their remaining revenue is now from ghost accounts who's payees don't even realize they are getting charged.  Its like the only thing keeping them afloat, would make a wicked class action suit if anyone could ever figure out how to get all their names together.

My wife's parents STILL have AOL.

On purpose.

My dad still has AOL.  He insists he needs it for email and his address book, even though he has broadband.

"Ok" is exactly the word to describe the post-acquisition Winamp. As for whether they're continuing development, the word on the twitters is yes.

They're a content company now. They own HuffPo and Patch, among other things.

For now, Winamp is fine. I think Winamp is still the best Windows music player. I don't think Foobar or MediaMonkey is as polished.

I have one user (boss' uncle) who has an AOL account and even browses the internet inside the software. Although it's been giving him trouble lately, so I showed him how to use Chrome instead. I think it caught on, jury's still out though.

I worked AOL tech support 10 years ago. They had the worst farking tech support policies ever imagined. People wouldn't have been worse off if they got the Indians. God what a Godawful company.

He can stop paying them and just move to a free account.  The only catch is then they charge him for tech support.  They pretty much have a web interface for everything via aol.com.

/have some older relatives who are still on AOL
//AOL.com actually isn't terrible, they basically cloned Gmail and have IM integrated into it and everything
/they also send you spam that you can't filter to make ends meet

BumpInTheNight: would make a wicked class action suit if anyone could ever figure out how to get all their names together.

It's no problem if there's a basis for a class action suit - an attorney would just subpoena the records of their current subscriber list and ask the last time each user logged in.  However, I'm assuming AOL has an ironclad contract agreement the user has to acknowledge when their account got set up, because no one has attempted that yet.

I judge people by their email addy. If it ends in @aol.com, they're automatically put into the "not even remotely tech-savvy, and probably quite stupid."

Why? Aol email addresses are free now, and I still have a netscape.com address I use.

Spinner.com was great for previewing new music.  I doubt many people use aol dialup or their software anymore.

I have some live songs that are from the AOL sessions, not sure how this will impact that (probably dead as well) but anything that hurts decent live music sucks.

My main e-mail address for friends is still aol. I've had it from 1996 or so. Its free and easy to check my friend (not business) mail so I have to say so what just like you. Not a big deal, why the hate on old internet providers for certain things?

Fair enough. But MediaMonkey is tits for music hoarders like me. Tag from Amazon, auto assessment of replay gain, syncs with all of the 1,385 portables I ever had, encodes lossless to mp3 on fly, etc.Other players do these things, but MM is so easy.

friend of mine in high school was a porn addict. he actually wound up having a bit of an association between the sound of a modem dialing up and sexual arousal, to the point where it's a pavlovian reaction.

i've messed with him, sending him video clips of things like bunnies or UFC that break out into modem sound effects halfway through, just to fark with him.

I didn't know Joystiq was owned by AOL.

Goddamnit. It's like every gaming site is disappearing.

Maybe the magazines will come back...

AOL is fading into history, but it will forever be remembered for launching sexting into the public consciousness.   Staredt out with A/S/L and five minutes later you were in an X-rated role-play with someone you hoped was a lonely hot girl, but was probably some lonely fat trucker.

My mother (waits for the laughter and snark to die down)... was paying AOL $14.95 / month, because she thought she needed to to keep her AOL e-mail address. Even though she also pays the local POTS provider for DSL, and was using the DSL for e-mail transport. We (my brother and I) very quietly converted her account to a free AOL account and she has not noticed any difference.

Yeah that happened with my parents.  They believed paying the $14.95 / month allowed them to retain their email accounts.  This is bogus.  You don't need to pay money to retain your AOL account anymore.
