It's a good thing that no one could take an ordinary kitchen pot and weld the lid in place.  Because then we'd also have to ban welding equipment.

Welding a pot filled with explosives? I wonder why that's not an option...

What we need to register is Muslims.

Using this, thinking it is some clever analog for gun control, is the surest and clearest way to indicate that you are entirely and completely missing the point.

I personally shy away from welding anything filled with flammable substances.  So I suppose we'll also have to regulate cutting torches, high speed drills, and threading dies.

Oh, Richard King of Virginia Beach, you are so clever.  That'll show them gun grabbers!

Also, if you look him up in the phone book, be sure to look up "King, Dick"

As someone who works in a kitchen supply store (seriously), I apologize to America. It's just that the National Preserve Association is a powerful lobby, and they're working for the interests of Big Mason Jar. It's a scary time. Anyways, blame Obama.

/I really do work in a kitchen supply store
//Actually have seen an increase in pressure cooker sales
///I'm enough of a capitalist whore to take their money and shut up

On a weird related lobby note, there is a mylar balloon lobby

Maybe we could limit purchases to one a month.  No one needs more than one pressure cooker a month.

I consider myself a responsible, proficient cook, and I know a number of cooks and even chefs, and no self-respecting cook needs a pressure cooker that holds more than six quarts.

If you need more than 6 quarts, you're no longer a cook.  You're a canner.  And we all know what THOSE people are like.

Yeah, that wouldn't be a great idea. Welding a latch on a pot, THEN filling it with explosives and latching it wouldn't be a big deal though.

I've never owned a high-capacity pressure cooker and I can't even imagine what I would use it for, but now I'm going to go buy one before they're banned.

That's the spirit. Be sure to pick up a few flats of canning jars too; I hear there's a shortage on the horizon.

I need my high capacity pressure cooker for boar hunting. Ever try to take one of those down with a little 2 or 4 what pressure cooker? It just doesn't work!

Who has a need or right to own a 23-quart-capacity pressure cooker? And, of course, the individual making and exploding the bomb and enhancing its destructive force with a pressure cooker is not responsible for what happens with it; it's the fault of the evil manufacturers and of the stores that sell the pressure cookers.

Richard King
Virginia Beach

I'm less frightened by guns than I am by the fact that there are people out there like Richard King of Virginia Beach, who have been sitting there like an undetonated pressure cooker bomb, just waiting for something really farking nasty to happen to people so he can write another one of these letters.

You know how everyone's asking how Tamerlan Tsarnaev got "radicalized?" How nobody saw the warning signs when he started tweeting about how he doesn't have a single American friend, or started shouting in the middle of services at his mosque to the point where they kicked him out?

I'm raising the question about Richard King of Virginia Beach. This is his screaming-in-the-middle-of-prayers moment. Yeah, a bunch of people woke up in a hospital bed without their legs, but OH SNAP THAT'LL SHOW THE GUN HATERS so it's cool. He's working at Tsarnaev levels of empathy here.

Responsible gun owners, you might find the intra-Muslim dialogue these days interesting. It consists of a lot of decent people who haven't done anything wrong having an "oh shiat we need to do something about these guys or we're all farked" moment.

I've only just recently discovered making hard boiled eggs in a pressure cooker. I guess technically they're pressure steamed, not boiled. It's quick, and the shells come off cleanly.

Also,

The funny thing is that there are safety regulations covering pressure cookers.  The older ones were kind of dangerous.

If my memory serves me correctly, I believe that the inventor of the pressure cooker was killed by a pressure cooker.

Terrorist!

You will hear from Monsanto.  No making your own food.

Unless "big vegetable garden" is a euphemism for something else.  Hoe.

Remember after Oklahoma City, all the calls to restrict or modify fertilizers?  I even remember a truck that spilled fertilizer here on I-70 - shut down the entire road for hours "since fertilizer is a dangerous explosive" and all.

What is special about pressure cookers for making bombs?

Also, isn't the explosive compound what matters?  Wasn't it gunpowder in this case?

Terrorism is an American wet dream.

The right can drum up the fear and lobby for tougher crime laws, increased military intervention, and really play up the need for racial profiling.

The left can drum up the fear and lobby for a nannier nanny state, taking away our ability to protect ourselves and cook for large groups.

Both would rather you go to work and come home and watch television, think pablum thoughts, and buy harmless junk... lots and lots of harmless junk. Preferably over the internet, which they want to be tracked and regulated like everything else in our lives. Long live the Cogs!

Look you deplorable commie, canning is an integral part of our proud American heritage!  It's a way of life passed down from grandmother to mother to daughter.  And if the Big One ever hits, it's an important survival skill!

What else do you want to ban....foraging for nuts and berries?!?
