Sorry, but language is something developed and created by people. If people pronounce a word that way, that's how it's pronounced.

Seriously, I bet Fox News and right wing radio talk shows go out of their way to talk about "jiffs".

Sort of the way that every time Michelle Obama says something about eating healthy, you get a dozen right-wing derpmeisters tweeting "IMMA EAT A BIG FAT BURGER SUCK IT FARTBONGO".

From the comments:  Wow, what a moron! This inventor really needs to go back to school and learn how to use the linguistic rules of the English language. Since "GIF" is an acronym for "Graphic Interchange Format", the very word graphic (with a hard G), has already trumped the inventor's very own claim of a soft 'G' on GIF, and dictates that GIF is to be pronounced using a hard g.

Yeah, thanks for the image format buckos, but I think everyone on the planet will decide on how it's pronounced.

I'm not aware of any rule that the pronunciation of an acronym is determined by the words that make it up.  An acronym kind of gets treated as a word on its own for purposes of grammar and pronunciation.

Personally, I do say it as "jiff", but if someone said "giff" (hard G), I wouldn't get all pissy.

I say "Giff" with a hard g, and you are an evil bastard if you say "jiff." You are what's wrong with this country!

From wikipedia
"The creators of the format pronounced GIF with a soft 'G' as in 'gin'."

Somewhere back at my parent's house, I still have a computer magazine from the late 80's with an article about the GIF format. It also mentioned the soft G pronunciation.

/Stop correcting me, and making me feel like a moron. You're the moron.

First of all, it's hard "g".

Second, I just started a new job in a design firm and when CSRs ask for a .png file for customers they actually say " I need a 'ping' file for so and so...".

I've never heard anyone say that before. Is it common or am I the only one that says "p n g"?

My impartial view:

-It is JIF if you rightly agree that the creators have the say in pronunciation.

-If you're a mindless conformist and a slave to the whims of the mouth-breathing majority, you pronounce it as gift (minus the T).

/Of course, if you pronounce it as GIFT, you are WRONG!

NO.

I say either a, G I F file or a JIFF file. as in the letter G.. pronounce JAH  EYE EFF JIFF OR GIF.

You would get shot if you actually went up to someone and said GIF like GIFT.

GIF like gift, sounds like you don't know what you are talking about and you don't work around or with people who actually communicate using these file names daily.

Aren't you just making the case that it's sometimes acceptable to NOT pronounce the first letter of the acronym in the same way?

i have never heard it pronounced with a hard g.   most of my friends are internet nerds like me and we all pronounce it like "jiff."  i had no idea that anyone pronounced it differently than that.

You are posting in a "how to properly pronounce an acronym" thread and are wondering if the same thing is common for another acronym? Of course it is common. The letters don't even need to be that close to forming an actual word and we will still do it. See "samba" for SMB etc.

They created it, they get to decide how it's pronounced.

2013-04-27 08:33:13 AM
We should pronounce it "giff" for these reasons:

1) Who cares what the creators did? Nearly every word in our language changes. No matter how many times you tell me the creator of the word "gospel" meant for us to pronounce it "godspell", I'm still going to say it "gospel".

2) The .jif file format already exists, and is pronounced "jiff". (JPEG Interchange Format)
