You're not alone. Its one of my favorites. Only person in that movie I didn't like was Henry Rollins... he didn't seem campy(?) enough.
I'm still waiting on a full movie based on Neuromancer and IMDB says there's a Neuromancer in production...

How about we get a good director with some boku money behind him to do Neuromancer the right way?

A young Grace Park would make a great Molly Millions.

/not sure about Case, though.

Nope, I liked it too.  It wasn't as good as the short story, IMO, and I think that's the source of a lot of the hate.  But if you go into it thinking of it as a different story it's alright.  (Waterworld had some good moments too, although I hated the ending.)

Oh I don't even remember him in it and I enjoy him. I need to watch it again soon.

Anyway *knucks*

I agree. William Gibson is a fantastic author. I'll hold judgement before loving or hating this.

Yah, its based on that movie, no precursor beyond that of any kind.  None.  As if that was 1995 though, wow, you be getting old.  Not me though, I live forever.

The only problem I see with that is that so many movies and TV shows ripped off elements of Neuromancer that it's not going to look very original.

Because that narrows it down. Weren't the 90s built out of dolphins and Ice T?

Monophilament whip, biatches!

Wow, apparently the Buffy movie made over double it's budget.  It wasn't even a flop, thanks IMDB!

Yes. The one with the space herpes.

That was Ice T, but it wasn't a dolphin, it was actually Keanu Reeves.  Understandable mistake.

The movie could have been better if a) people got what was going on; b) they changed some elements; c) they changed a lot of the dialogue.  The problem (especially then) was that cyberpunk was only big in books and games... it's a little bigger now (things like The Matrix helped).  It could work.

Just PLEASE don't use the dialogue writers that work on that new SyFy show, Defiance.... my GOD that dialogue sucks.

2013-04-26 08:29:46 PM
Yes, it was a crappy film, but I need more cyberpunk in my life.

2013-04-26 08:30:38 PM
The movie featured a dolphin zapping death rays at cyborg-assassin Jesus. What's not to like?

A neuromancer movie could be great, but it would be tough to do right and most people would probably see it as a ripoff of 90s cyberpunk. I'm still waiting to see how Ready Player One turns out. If it somehow works, I say we give whoever directs it the option to tackle Neuromancer.

Sure. Back then they weren't as remake/adaptation happy like they are now. They wouldn't reboot or adapt a movie that was a flop. Nowadays they'll remake any damned thing.

I'm kinda digging Defiance so far. Haven't noticed any problems with the dialogue. I think I mainly enjoy the fact that they haven't hesitated to throw viewers into the deep end right away without over explaining everything.

Neuromancer (and to a lesser extent the other stories in the same story universe) founded the whole cyberpunk "thing".  It doesn't need to be gratuitously different from what came after it, as long as the trailers and publicity and whatnot points up the fact that it was freakishly different from what had gone before it.

2013-04-26 08:35:27 PM
I like Johnny Mnemonic. It's a great cyberpunk flick that was just out at the wrong time. Keanu's entertaining, Henry Rollins is entertaining, Dina Meyer is entertaining (and hot), Dolph Lundgren's Street Preacher is menacing, and Ice T is a good fit for the role they gave him.

It's the same problem as with "I Am Legend" -- So many others have ripped off Matheson's ideas for both vampires and zombies that Hollywood is terrified to make a movie that is loyal to the book... Instead, they turn the vampires into mutants, or f♥ck with the ending, or build in a completely unneeded "origin" story.

If you make "I Am Legend" that reflects the actual story in the book, you'll have a bunch of people saying that they ripped off Romero's movies, True Blood, Underworld, etc.

I think the time for a Neuromancer movie may be long past. It used to be science fiction, but look around us! Neuromancer is basically here and now.

And the opening line is "The sky was the color of a tv set to a dead channel (meaning static)". We don't really have that nowadays. They'll have the same problem when they remake Poltergeist.

I really liked the movie too. Don't know why theres so much hate for it. Saw it on my 12th b-day (or somewhere around there).  and loved it.

I really don't understand the love for Neuromancer.  I've tried listening to the audiobook and it just didn't grab me.  Can't even remember how far I got into it before stopping.  Did it have some kind of amazing ending?

It's dated now, but the basis for Neuromancer is hard-boiled detective fiction with a technological sheen. It's also an investigation over what is sentient. Case is human, but he's a burnt-out druggie going through the motions in an existential crisis. Neuromancer and Wintermute are AI constructs, but have desires and goals, and use Case for their ultimate ends. Which is more alive?

I'd say its not so much about the journey or the characters. The environment and mood make up a lot of it and I seem to recall that how the book ended was pretty good, but how the whole story came together at the end made for an excellent novel. If that makes sense.

Its been a few years though.

Instead of doing a "Johnny Mnemonic" retread, they should try another story from Burning Chrome. Maybe flesh out the alternate universe of "Fragments of a Hologram Rose", or "Red Star Winter Orbit". Or, shiat, why not just do Count Zero?

Well that's what I'm counting on, that it won't be limited to the one short story and they just mentioned JM because that's recognizable to the film's legion of fan.

"Johnny Mnemonic" featured many elements that were later ripped off by the Wachowski brothers siblings for "The Matrix."  Discuss.

Will the sky look like a tv set to a dead channel? Because that's not a thing anymore.

Love the sprawl stories.
A fictional universe where the street finds its own use for things could really be awesome.

Yep, they farked around with the rights so long that ship has long since sailed.  Too bad.  Now Count Zero?  Ehhh maybe, that still had some new stuff in it. And it was *great* prose.

I think The Matrix is closer to Neuromancer. Trinity is Molly and the whole cyberpunk AI thing.

I'll give you that. The Wachowskis just produced-in the first movie, anyway-a far more compelling story, even compensating for Keanu's wooden acting by having stellar supporting cast.

If they want to release a tie-in video game like Defiance, they can update and re-release Uplink.

I'd go off the wall with casting Case.  Honestly I can't think of too many big name mid-twenties actors who don't esentially play the same character in every movie and they'll need someone who can do that manic style without coming off as forced and comical..  But Tom Hardy is Armitage, there is no debate on this.

2013-04-26 09:42:26 PM
You could base a whole TV series "based" on the movie but change the names to separate the suckage.

Actually, if you could redo Judge Dredd and Total Recall you could redo Johnny Mnemonic, and possibly not make a total pigs ear of it.
