One would think that to be obvious. Unfortunately, it's the police we're talking about.

Then again, when you set yourself up for self-immolation, you should probably not do things that might cause someone to bring the match unless you're serious. So hey, maybe is really was suicide by cop.

If you ever hear some idiot pipe up about why the cops didn't taze X, this is the reason why they don't carry them in some jurisdictions. Or they put a gun up to the cops.

Some jurisdictions still use flammable bases in their MACE/Pepper Sprays (either because it's cheaper, or they have a thousand or so setting in inventory), and the Tasers can ignite them.

Yeah. That was concentrated stupid. The manufacturers of them themselves even say NOT to use it where there is a potential for igniting flammable materials.

2013-04-26 07:58:18 PM
What? Stop it! Asking that police actually stop and think before acting is clearly beyone the pale. You can't hire a bunch of dimwits and all of a sudden start raising the bar on them.

That's like playing keep-the-biscuit-away-from-the-three-legged-dog. It's clearly not fair, nothing good will come of it, and it's likely to get you bitten.

Let's just blame this on the dickbag dousing himself in petrol and move along.

You do realize that this was in that bastion of civility and intelligence that is the UK Police Service, right? The one where all the folks from Across the pond point and laugh at American cops for doing stuff from? Or did you RTFA?

Why was he tazed? If he's just flammable, but not threatening anyone then why taze? I see the problem as a function of the police being paramilitary. They get orders and must obey them immediately, so when they give one to you and you don't obey their displaced anger jumps to using force.

I'm not saying all or most, just some unquantifiable number see civilians as subordinates.

Not as bad as the guy who covered himself in kerosene and was gonna light himself up. The cops showed up and talked him down for an hour or two. He finally decides to live and is alright for awhile. At some point before changing he decides to go out on the porch for a smoke and everyone's forgotten the kerosene's on him....

TFA doesn't give enough info to really judge the police. If he was going to light himself on fire or attack the pd their options are pretty limited at thst point. Nobody is going to wrestle you if you're covered in gasoline. But hey its totally the police's fault this guy poured gas all over himself and was a crazy sob

They had two cops, One starts spraying the guy so he can't light himself on fire while the other can dive in through the cloud and tackle him. Save the day and would look funny on camera,

Wasn't there a cop a while back who tried to extinguish a human torch with a can of pepper spray? Turned out that the large red can of pepper spray looked the same as the fire extinguisher in the trunk of her cop car.

I come from a family thoroughly steeped in law enforcement and military careers. I'm related to and have known far more than my fair share of law enforcement and military officers. Trust me when I say that it is perfectly safe and perfectly reasonable to say "most". Law enforcement officers do not interact with civilians, they handle them.

Yup, I loved this quote ""They (officer and motorist) attempted to get the young man to roll on the ground to put out the flames," Portland Police Chief Rosie Sizer said. "He kept running away and was uncooperative." It is not clear if the man was running away because of the effects of the pepper spray.
