Well... it is Detroit. If the bowling thing doesn't work this time around, they might just decide to jump on that idea.

How can it not be awesome? It's simple, really. They'll give it the reality show treatment. Instead of the old format, they'll spend the first half of the show giving us a profile of each person, getting to know them, hang out with them, get their confessional to the camera, all while playing cheesy music that's designed to tell the audience how they should feel about this particular contestant's personal story and struggles.

It will make you want to vomit.

For an example of how they can screw this up and make it suck, just watch SyFy's robot combat show. They show you how you can take something as cool as two robots fighting, and turn it into American Idol or The Real World.

And I bet you that this is exactly how it was pitched for revival, too.

I think that was also a Minnesota show because I remember my dad trying out for it.

Brings back memories of sitting on the couch with our tin TV trays holding piping hot Swanson dinners while we watched some poor schlubs battle it out on the lanes of destiny.

They need to bring this back to the DFW area and have Verne Lundquist host it again. Maybe for nostalgia they can find him some really loud double-knit outfits to wear again.

Meh. I could never get into watching bowling.

Though I think it can be useful. During college I had this downstairs neighbor who regularly had late night parties at his apartment. We were friendly and he usually had good bud, so I never stomped on his floor or got in his business if he was too loud at 3 a.m.

Well, one semester it worked out that I had 3 finals on one day. I went down and told him the week before, "Please, you know I never have a problem with your parties, but please, please don't throw down Wednesday night, I have three tests Thursday."

"No problem!"

I even reminded him Tuesday of the week of.

Wednesday night, about 30 minutes after the bars close (and just about the time I'm trying to get to sleep): bass starts thumping downstairs, loud screaming girls and frat guy hooting, doors being beaten on...

Exams get taken etc.

Friday night, another party. It finally winds down about 5 a.m. At 8 a.m. I happen to be flipping around and I see bowling is on. I [mute] my stereo and crank the volume up to "MISSILE LAUNCH" volume. I wait until the guy is just about to let go of the ball and

[unmute] THUD! ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLCRASH! [mute]

[unmute] THUD! ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLCRASH! [mute]

[unmute] THUD! ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLCRASH! [mute]

Doesn't take long before he's beating a broomstick into his ceiling.

[unmute] THUD! ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLCRASH! [mute]

He tried to give me sh*t about it later, but I told him something along the lines of "eat a turd, ass".

Yeah, CS, I know.

As one who had to suffer through the era in the 70's when there was nothing on TV on a Saturday afternoon but TV bowling (or maybe a badly-edited old 60's movie), I can assure you it wasn't Cool or Fun. The stations may as well have ran nothing but a simple sign between noon and 5PM on Saturdays that read "GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY!".

Cleveland, 1970s, local station.
During a big UMW strike they did a spoof of this called Bowling for Coal.
Three strikes, you get a bucket of coal.

You can have the ball, I'll take Karen Gillan. Or that other woman whose name I can't remember. Hell, give me a couple of drinks and I'd probably take Matt Smith.

Up into the early '90's, IIRC, there was bowling on TV 7 days a week here in Milwaukee.  6 of those days were locally produced.

M-F had The Bowling Game.  It featured 2 local league teams going head to head playing the last four frames.  There were randomly placed prizes behind frames on the scoreboard, a jackpot that could be won if the player got a strike when the striped pin was in the headpin position, if a bowler failed to mark they got bowling lessons and a bunch of other fun, goofy shiat.  One of the things I thought was cool about TFA was they're bringing in the old host to do that show.  That couldn't be done with TBG as one of the hosts, Lee Rothman died some time back.  The other host, Tom Kohl was married to a cousin for a while.

Saturday was the PBA Tour on ABC.

Sunday was Bowling with the Champs produced by the local NBC affiliate.  They would have tournaments to set the field for the season.  The format was two bowlers head to head for a three game series with an occasional use of the format that the PBA used.

Pretty sure it was produced in many markets.  We had it in upstate NY, probably out of Syracuse.

I grew up in a tough town..(How tough was it??)...We had one gameshow.....Bowling for Parole.
