Jesus freaking Christ, get over it, America. China is far worse than Cuba when it comes to freedom, human rights, etc. And they are "most favored". Get over it. Open up the relationship, let's move on with our lives and stop living in the damn Cold War.

Jument: serpent_sky: Seriously - why are we SUCH assholes to Cuba?  A little diplomacy would go along way, perhaps even to addressing some of the freedom and human rights issues in the country.

Because the US is too far down the rabbit hole to stop. If the US were to suddenly say "you know what? this is just stupid" and end all sanctions, that would mean that the US would be admitting to being stupid and wrong for decades. Also, communism is still the devil. There may be other reasons but I think is at least a part of it.

Considering that these communists revolted against our influence and drove our people off the island, nationalized all of our stuff, shot at us with guns and missiles and then almost decimated the mammal population of this planet by playing a game of nuclear chicken with the freaking Kennedy... No, I'd say it isn't the US that has to crawl out of any rabbit holes.

There's alot they could be doing to make things better with their neighbor (you know, besides flipping us off and throwing refugees at florida) or better for the residents of the island.  We've got no reason to kiss and make up with a dictatorship and no incentive to risk opening old wounds.

I say: Leave them be till they decide its time to move on.

/They wanted nothing to do with capitalism.
/They got their wish.

She is a Cuban diplomat, thereby she is not allowed to leave New York.  Why is this so hard for people to understand.  Maybe is she wasn't directly related to the Castros we could turn a blind eye.  However she is, and thereby until we change our official stance on Cuba.  It is what it is.

/supports ending the embargo.

Why should it matter that she is a gay rights activist? Does that give you some sort of worth?

A 'gay "rights" activist' from a totalitarian country that locks up gays and who just happens to be the daughter of one of rulers?

Yeah that sounds legit.

The tourist areas of Havana are totally indicative of the rest of Cuba. It is a paradise and all the citizenry live like kings. Everything is free and nobody wants for anything. There is no oppression nor restriction on freedom of the press, speech, or religion. Poverty is unheard of in this workers paradise.

At least that's what I've learned on Fark.

Our continued embargo of cuba makes about as much sense as north korea still hating us for that whole "korean war" mess... At some point, you have to realize that most of the players who hated each other in the first place are dead, senile,  or dying - it's just an international, more timely version of the hatfields and mccoys..

You see, years ago during the Cold War, we had medium range nuclear missiles stationed in Turkey.  So we could easily blow up Kiev, Sevastopol, Baku, etc.  This did not make the USSR happy, so they decided to return the favor by sticking medium range nuclear missiles in Cuba.

Kennedy went full retard for awhile and eventually a backroom deal was worked out where we took our shiat out of Turkey and the USSR flushed the Cuba project.  However for whatever reason the Boomers decided to be butthurt little shiats about a valid countermove by the USSR and stuck the embargo in place.

/plus Castro overthrew one of our scumbag puppets

The interesting thing is how communism is more or less finished in every other country that the US didn't boycott, it seems more like the boycott helped prop up Castro by creating an obvious enemy for him to rally support for himself.
