I was sort of hoping that Obama might open things up in a bit in his second term, you know now that he doesn't have to worry about getting re-elected. There really is no reason to continue this. Cuba hasn't been a threat since the ruskies put missiles there, they CERTAINLY pose no threat whatsoever to the USA now. It's not like best Korea, sure there's a lot of poverty but no more than any other Caribbean nation. I've been to the Bahamas, believe me outside of the tourist traps they are basically a third world country. So they're commies, who farking cares? Let them be commies.

Ex-Cubans living in S. Florida.  When Florida stops being a battleground state, the US will finally get around to updating its policies on Cuba.

My guess is that it is the last piece of the JFK legacy. To bad we haven't had another young charismatic Democrat President come along. I bet if we had one of those he could lift the embargo and everyone would be cool with it.

Until then I'll just enjoy the Padrons....

The interesting thing is how communism is more or less finished in every other country that the US didn't boycott, it seems more like the boycott helped prop up Castro by creating an obvious enemy for him to rally support for himself.

It is time for the gay members of Congress to come out of the cloakroom and pressure State to grant her a visa. Or get their pages to do it.

Lazin said Castro had agreed to speak on a panel about Cuba on May 4 and was to accept an award for her activism at a dinner that night. He did not expect any visa problems because she had been granted permission to attend an academic conference in San Francisco last year.

However, a number of Cuban-American politicians criticized the State Department for issuing Castro an entry visa for that event. They noted that U.S. rules prohibit Communist Party members and other high-ranking Cuban government officials from entry without special dispensation.

So in other words, the State Department tucked their tail between their legs this time around because of getting biatched at recently, and/or they're too damn lazy to provide any necessary BS dispensation. Cute.

You see, years ago during the Cold War, we had medium range nuclear missiles stationed in Turkey.  So we could easily blow up Kiev, Sevastopol, Baku, etc.  This did not make the USSR happy, so they decided to return the favor by sticking medium range nuclear missiles in Cuba.

Kennedy went full retard for awhile and eventually a backroom deal was worked out where we took our shiat out of Turkey and the USSR flushed the Cuba project.  However for whatever reason the Boomers decided to be butthurt little shiats about a valid countermove by the USSR and stuck the embargo in place.

I've gotta think that with the money coming in to Cuba from China, Europe, and Latin American countries with leftist governments like Venezuela, the US embargo is having a pretty neglibible impact on Cuba at this point anyway.

Right, it isn't some hell hole where the living envy the dead. Poverty is relative, of course and a great deal of that can be blamed on the embargo, which will likely soon outlive Castro. That's a LOT of U.S. tourist dollars lost, because from everything I've heard about Cuba, the food is fantastic, the beaches are great, and the people are very welcoming. If I had the choice to have to live in any communist state (official communist states that is) it would be a tough call between Cuba and Vietnam. Probably Cuba, as I imagine Spanish would be easier to learn than Vietnamese.

The tourist areas of Havana are totally indicative of the rest of Cuba. It is a paradise and all the citizenry live like kings. Everything is free and nobody wants for anything. There is no oppression nor restriction on freedom of the press, speech, or religion. Poverty is unheard of in this workers paradise.

Doesn't it have something to do with the Monroe Doctrine, and the fact that it applies to the Americas, but not Asia?

I mean, I don't think we need to declare ourselves the Batman of North and South America anymore, but there is more historical precedent for us feeling ok to meddle in the western hemisphere.

Even if the rest of that was right (which it isn't, she's not a diplomat, she's going to a conference because she's an activist in the topic), the bolded sentence is the biggest travesty of all this. In America, 'corruption of the blood' does not exist. Period.

I know a few people who have been to Cuba and enjoyed it. How much of their stays were in state-controlled tourist areas, I don't know. Cuba still has an oppressive government but it seems to have lightened under the reign of old-Raul.

If I had to choose between permanently living in Cuba, North Korea, Haiti or Myanmar, I would choose Cuba. Mmmmm plaintains.

ha-ha-guy: /plus Castro overthrew one of our scumbag puppets

Hell, if Castro ever did ONE decent thing in his wretched life it was overthrowing Batista.

This is a tough call.  She has the stink of Castro on her, which carries huge weight.  And the whole US/Cuba thing has gone so badly for so long that it just isn't going to change until Fidel and Raul are both dead.  That's just how it's gonna be.

The bad part is that this would have been a great way to thaw things in advance of the new age of Cuba.  A human rights hero for a generally liked cause would be a good high profile "show visa".  I hope they keep her in mind: this kind of stuff is going to be really important in a few years, Castro being old and sickly these days.

What one does is to go to Mexico and travel from there.  I think you can get a temporary transit visa or some such thing.  And I am told that there are some no questions asked tour operations.

Seriously... I'm pretty damn anti-communist, but WTF is the BS embargo accomplishing? Nothing. It's decades past time to end it. If we haven't achieved our goals with more than half a farking century of unilateral sanctions then it's time to stop and try something else.

skullkrusher: it can't go on much longer. That is gonna be one wealthy fooking island (relatively speaking) once the embargo ends

That is more than unlikely. The whole rest of the world already trades with Cuba (Europe, Asia, etc.) and has been pretty much all along. We're the cheese standing alone on this. Pretty much the only ones we're hurting here are ourselves. This embargo serves no purpose other than to curry votes for the GOP in Florida. It's long past time to end it.

It's already a popular tourist destination for Europe, South America and Central America. True, but at least there will be more people whose life gets better. The poor will mostly remain hopelessly poor. A middle class will develop. And shiat all over the poor. Still, when it comes to the usual Socialist fight for liberation of the poor from the talons of the rich, they only succeed at making everyone poor. And brutalizing them. Capitalism unchecked will bring us right back to the exact same spot in history, and will never help the poor, especially when mixed with corruption, but I'd rather have that than anything the Communists have tried and failed in the 20th Century.

Hatred is the central element of our struggle! Hatred that is intransigent...hatred so violent that it propels a human being beyond his natural limitations, making him violent and cold- blooded killing machine...We reject any peaceful approach. Violence is inevitable. To establish Socialism rivers of blood must flow! The imperialist enemy must feel like a hunted animal wherever he moves. Thus we'll destroy him! These hyenas are fit only for extermination. We must keep our hatred alive and fan it to paroxysm! The victory of Socialism is well worth millions of atomic victims!

skullkrusher: well, aside from adding 300,000,000 potential tourists who live closer than pretty much everyone else who goes there currently and opening the largest economy in the world on their doorstep

So what? It still won't matter to the Cuban people. As I've been explaining, lack of cash is not a problem in Cuba. They already have plenty of tourism and trade with the entire rest of the world. The people who are rich in Cuba now are the only ones who will be rich after the US drops the embargo.

They don't have a society which is largely dirt poor because they have no money or nothing to sell. They also don't have a society with such a low standard of living because they get Euros instead of US dollars. It's their government which is the problem. More tourists from the US won't solve that.

We should still drop the embargo though, because it serves absolutely no purpose other than for a particular political party to curry favor with a specific demographic here in the US. And it provides political fodder for the Castro regime to use as propoganda.

And with their gradual realization that "the white vote" alone won't cut it anymore, they wouldn't *dream* of coughing up a political advantage in courting non-white voters.

My experiences have been that those Cubans in this country tend to hate the regime in Cuba and want the embargo to remain in place.

This is correct. And Americans have the right to express their opinion that they disagree with the state department. The Cuban embargo is basically just sour grapes/ pandering to the Cuban ex-pat community in South Florida. It's time for it to go. /I've got some fresh Material on Janeane Garofolo and liberals, if you want

Wow, that's a pretty fragile ego you've got there.  Bragging about how you're putting someone on ignore because he said you were easily impressed by a bad joke?  That's pathetic.

And now you can brag about how you put me on ignore too, if you like.

Oh, by the way, since you're going to put me on ignore anyway, I might also add that based on other posts you've made in other threads, I had already noticed before this little brouhaha that you're belligerent, hostile, misogynistic, homophobic, and defensive.  Plus you're dumb and use strawman arguments because you lack the intellectual courage or honesty to deal with what the people who didn't agree with you ACTUALLY said.  Or maybe you just weren't able to UNDERSTAND what they said, and it was an unintentional strawman.

So it's really no surprise to learn that your tender little feelings can't withstand such mild criticism.  I imagine you have a pretty low self-esteem.

diddletwat: ShonenBat: So what is Castro's excuse for not going for democracy?

I'm sorry, did you mean for not going for capitalism?

No, I didn't. I'll take popular sovereignty over market reforms, although the former usually leads to the latter.

ShonenBat: So what is Castro's excuse for not going for democracy?

The US was all butthurt over losing one of their favorite fascist dictators, Batista, and refused to meet with Castro when he came to the US seeking diplomatic relations after the revolution.  Russia took the opportunity to woo Castro and the rest is history.

Thunderpipes: Why should it matter that she is a gay rights activist? Does that give you some sort of worth?

Why should it matter where she's from or who her father is? Do those things detract from her worth?
