Our continued embargo of cuba makes about as much sense as north korea still hating us for that whole "korean war" mess... At some point, you have to realize that most of the players who hated each other in the first place are dead, senile,  or dying - it's just an international, more timely version of the hatfields and mccoys..

I've gotta think that with the money coming in to Cuba from China, Europe, and Latin American countries with leftist governments like Venezuela, the US embargo is having a pretty neglibible impact on Cuba at this point anyway.

nekom:

I was sort of hoping that Obama might open things up in a bit in his second term, you know now that he doesn't have to worry about getting re-elected. There really is no reason to continue this. Cuba hasn't been a threat since the ruskies put missiles there, they CERTAINLY pose no threat whatsoever to the USA now. It's not like best Korea, sure there's a lot of poverty but no more than any other Caribbean nation. I've been to the Bahamas, believe me outside of the tourist traps they are basically a third world country. So they're commies, who farking cares? Let them be commies.

Actually, there's a lot less poverty (depending on how you define it, I guess) in Cuba than in most other Caribbean nations.  Every citizen receives adequate food, shelter, medical care, and a full education for free.  It's not a comfortable life for most people, but nobody's starving, or dying of dysentery, or facing a lot of the other problems that are rampant in the region.

As soon as Fidel McCain drops dead, relations with Cuba will be normalized in a week.

Right, it isn't some hell hole where the living envy the dead. Poverty is relative, of course and a great deal of that can be blamed on the embargo, which will likely soon outlive Castro. That's a LOT of U.S. tourist dollars lost, because from everything I've heard about Cuba, the food is fantastic, the beaches are great, and the people are very welcoming. If I had the choice to have to live in any communist state (official communist states that is) it would be a tough call between Cuba and Vietnam. Probably Cuba, as I imagine Spanish would be easier to learn than Vietnamese.

The tourist areas of Havana are totally indicative of the rest of Cuba. It is a paradise and all the citizenry live like kings. Everything is free and nobody wants for anything. There is no oppression nor restriction on freedom of the press, speech, or religion. Poverty is unheard of in this workers paradise.

At least that's what I've learned on Fark.

Doesn't it have something to do with the Monroe Doctrine, and the fact that it applies to the Americas, but not Asia?

I mean, I don't think we need to declare ourselves the Batman of North and South America anymore, but there is more historical precedent for us feeling ok to meddle in the western hemisphere.

It might be a more prosaic reason. Who is going to provide security? It's not going to look good for the US government if Castro's daughter gets gunned down in the street here.

Quinzy: She is a Cuban diplomat, thereby she is not allowed to leave New York.  Why is this so hard for people to understand.  Maybe is she wasn't directly related to the Castros we could turn a blind eye.  However she is, and thereby until we change our official stance on Cuba.  It is what it is.

/supports ending the embargo.

Even if the rest of that was right (which it isn't, she's not a diplomat, she's going to a conference because she's an activist in the topic), the bolded sentence is the biggest travesty of all this. In America, 'corruption of the blood' does not exist. Period.

This entire thing is bullshiat on that alone. I don't care if she's the daughter of Hitler; American law does not give a flying shiat, never has, and never should.

HailRobonia: Thunderpipes: Why should it matter that she is a gay rights activist? Does that give you some sort of worth?

Well it is kind of embarrassing that the Evil Human Rights Violating Oppressors are more forward thinking than the US.

And not giving her permission to go to the event is a great way of "Streisanding" it, because I doubt anyone much would have heard of it if it wasn't for this fuss.

ShawnDoc: "When Florida stops being a battleground state, the US will finally get around to updating its policies on Cuba."

This. Attitudes on Cuba are the only reason the GOP has kept Florida in play. They're not walking away from that a day earlier than they have to.
And with their gradual realization that "the white vote" alone won't cut it anymore, they wouldn't *dream* of coughing up a political advantage in courting non-white voters.

I know a few people who have been to Cuba and enjoyed it. How much of their stays were in state-controlled tourist areas, I don't know. Cuba still has an oppressive government but it seems to have lightened under the reign of old-Raul.

If I had to choose between permanently living in Cuba, North Korea, Haiti or Myanmar, I would choose Cuba. Mmmmm plaintains.

Are you suggesting that the US's campaign against Cuba has anything remotely to do with human rights?  If so, then they US policies toward Cuba during the Batista reign must have been down-right draconian!

ha-ha-guy: /plus Castro overthrew one of our scumbag puppets

Hell, if Castro ever did ONE decent thing in his wretched life it was overthrowing Batista.

This is a tough call.  She has the stink of Castro on her, which carries huge weight.  And the whole US/Cuba thing has gone so badly for so long that it just isn't going to change until Fidel and Raul are both dead.  That's just how it's gonna be.

The bad part is that this would have been a great way to thaw things in advance of the new age of Cuba.  A human rights hero for a generally liked cause would be a good high profile "show visa".  I hope they keep her in mind: this kind of stuff is going to be really important in a few years, Castro being old and sickly these days.

What one does is to go to Mexico and travel from there.  I think you can get a temporary transit visa or some such thing.  And I am told that there are some no questions asked tour operations.

serpent_sky: Seriously - why are we SUCH assholes to Cuba?  A little diplomacy would go along way, perhaps even to addressing some of the freedom and human rights issues in the country.

Because the US is too far down the rabbit hole to stop. If the US were to suddenly say "you know what? this is just stupid" and end all sanctions, that would mean that the US would be admitting to being stupid and wrong for decades. Also, communism is still the devil. There may be other reasons but I think is at least a part of it.
