Okay, the stuff they play on FM Radio and gets exposure on TV?

That isn't country music. That's music played b y frustrated wannabe pop singers who couldn't make it in the big time, so they started singing with a twang and talking about mama and jesus and girl power and appealing to conservatives and mini-van driving soccer moms.

David Allan Coe is great. Very underrated songwriter.

Saw him at a show back in '98, and a few idiots showed up to protest him. He bought them drinks and invited them to hang out anyway. But, said he was gonna kick the shiat out of anyone that yelled at him while he was singing. Protest over.

This song was written by DAC. Johnny Paycheck was a buddy of George Jones for years. George even paid for Johnny's funeral.

I am not really a country music fan, but this guy was legendary.   Amazing booming voice and my father's all-time favorite artist..  Once on the infamous Carnvival Triumph I watched a small Asian guy that could do a pretty good impersonation of Jones.  Probably the only reason that dude wasn't a big-time country star was because a small Asian dude.  Were he born a big redneck, he would have been famous, not playing behind a bar on a cruise ship.

Real country (Well, it's Alt-Country now) is still out there, and fairly easy to find. But you're not going to be force fed it by big music labels, FM Radio, or CMT.

Correct.  And the mods had about 20 of those identical submissions to choose from..

Then go with the first submission. Is that so hard? If the first submission is from TEM then go with the person with the fewest greens.

Looking at the TF queue, I'm kinda glad that the mods picked this thread to green. I know that "He Stopped Loving Her Today" was one of his most popular songs, and the story of it is somewhat appropriate to George's passing, but there's only so many times you can see that pop up as a thread title.

Personally I'd have gone with "And it kept running through my mind/This time he's over her for good"

Isn't that the performance in which he sings sweetly about raping a teenager?

To be fair, most of his songs were about sweetly raping teenagers.

Is that so?  I never actually listened to him but I remember seeing that guy in that suit singing that song on t.v.  Even as a kid he set off my Creep-O-Meter even though I didn't fully understand what he was getting at.  It's been burned into my memory.  I saw this performance again on some re-run or other years later and finally got the depravity of it in its entirety.

I actually didn't care much for country growing up. My mom listened to the old stuff and I thought it sucked.  As I've gotten older I've gained an appreciation for virtually all genres of music.  I had a chance to see Johnny Cash at Toad's Place in New Haven CT in 1990 and didn't go - I've always regretted it.  For that reason I try to see these legendary types when I can.  I saw both Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn and though they are not what I listen to even semi-regularly they put on fantastic shows and I can say that I enjoyed them live.
