Fear_and_Loathing: I bet she cashed the checks.

Sure she did.  She cashed enough of the checks to retire to a quiet life in Montana at twenty-three years old.  Good on her, I say.  The whole "dedicating her life to God" is a shame, but whatever makes someone happy.

My ex-wife worked as a model....small time stuff, nothing anywhere near national.  She had plenty of stories of smarmy agency guys peddling gigs to wannabe models for sex.  Apparently it's rampant, there are a boatload of women out there who want desparately to be models, and no shortage of people ready to take advantage of them.

She said in a lot of her gigs the models would typically change in a group area, and it was common for a lot of other people to be there.  She said the agency dirtbags would use that in interviews to aspiring models....saying things such as "You realize models have to change clothes in a communal area.  Does that bother you?  Would you have a problem taking off your clothes in front of others?  How about me?"

/doesn't change the fact that this particular woman seems to have a problem with reality.

PillsHere: Some time in the late 90's or early 2000's they decided to go from a "classy" lingerie store for women to being a trashy Playboy wannabe that only provided spank material for men.

And they actually did a damn good job of it at first, until some genius there decided instead of catering to straight men it's better to showcase the skeletor look preferred by gay fashion designers! The first two pics below are from the early era, and the last is from 2012.

Seriously...who the fark approved of this last one!? Someone actually looked at this mummified corpse backstage and said "Oh yeah, the Walking Dead look! A spray-tanned bio lab skeleton! So much better than that crap we used to show before!" The only difference between this crackhead and the drag pics of Iggy Pop is he looked healthier and she looks more masculine.

Any 23-year old that thinks they've had enough life experiences to write a book has lost me anyways.

bifford: Sounds like she was expected to the exact sort of thing you expect lingerie models to go through.  Was she groped?  What she insulted?  Did they overwork her?  Did they seize her passport (wait, she's American, so nvm)?  Did they force her to do things outside her contract?

I've read plenty of stories of women who abused by the sex trade - trafficked prostitutes, strippers, porn stars, low-pay fashion models, etc.  Some of those stories make my stomach churn, but this one does not.  The only argument this woman puts forward is that she suddenly realized God doesn't like her being slutty in front of a camera.

from the article
"Over the next two years, New York really opened my eyes to the dark side of the modeling industry. One of my roommates was so bulimic she would involuntarily throw up when she ate. She would go to sleep crying every night and just look at herself in the mirror thinking that she was so fat. And she was so thin.

I had photographers and male models hitting on me constantly. Once, a photographer actually pushed me up against the wall and tried to kiss me."

Sounds like she was a naive about the modeling industry, I'm sure that isn't rare.   Before everyone jumps on the "so what" bandwagon. These actions by the photographers and models would get them fired and maybe even sued in most other businesses.

She left the industry before it took over her life. Good for her.  Writing a book about it..ugh.

Theaetetus: Cybernetic: I doubt that she was unfamiliar with Victoria's Secret, their product lines, or their marketing campaigns prior to signing up for the competition. Nobody forced her to sign up for the competition. Nobody forced her to cash their checks. And now she wants to whine about it in public. And get paid (again) for whining about it. Yikes. Some guy will be married to that some day. Good luck to him.

Know how I know you didn't read the article or the excerpt?

Well, I missed the part where she's already married. Other than that, I stand by what I said.

Yeah if my 23 year old self started to preach at me about something I would probably laugh and pat him on the head and say "Boy you got some catching up to do."  I would probably do that at any 23 year old in fact.

Christ.  It's the year 2013.  If you can't spend five minutes trawling the internet for information on the realities of the modeling industry, then you're an ignorant idiot.  That's why I have trouble believing the chick's story*.  I mean, 50 years ago, you could get away with that kind of naivete.  Now, the every media platform is two mouse clicks away from porn.  If you're over the age of 15 and don't understand that putting yourself in front of a camera is grounds for being denigrated by all the other monkeys with a basket of poo always waiting for the opportunity to fling it, you are, frankly, counting to potato.

*All right, look, I feel  bad, like absolutely  miserable not taking her side here.  Because human exploitation makes me angry as fark.  BUT if you're posing for Victoria's Secret, you can't possibly NOT know what you're getting into, what's expected of you, what you're going to wear (or not wear) or who your intended audience is...ignorance is no excuse.

Wait...isn't this backwards?  My ex-wife had a subscription to VS catalogs in the late 80's, and those things were basically soft-core porn back then.  Tons of teh nekkid-ness....lotsa see-thoughs, nips, butt cracks, and on and on.  All that has changed....it's all gone now, you look at a VS catalog and it's extremely clean.  Anything remotely related to a nipple is photoshopped out, no nekkid-ness at all on display.  Plus the one catalog I saw had a lot of other stuff, like bed linens, comforters, pillows, etc.

Unless there's a porn version of the catalog as well as the clean version...in that case I stand corrected.  But the catalog I saw recently was NOTHING like the ones from the 80s.

/man, I used to *love* those catalogs....

I think the difference was back then it was geared more towards women so they would show how the product actually appeared while wearing it.  None of their products were geared/marketed towards teen girls or marketing that was geared towards boys/men.  The catalogs in the 80's had a certain level of class, no cute suggestive sayings on the panties, models didn't look like they were 12yrs old (in the face).

That's when it hit me. I was being paid to strip down and pose provocatively to titillate men. It wasn't about modeling clothes anymore...God, why did you have me win the Victoria's Secret Angel competition if it was going to make me feel this way?...Bisutti recalls laying on a bed in little clothing while a photographer encouraged her to pose more provocatively...

Oh, and the coup de grace....

the 23-year-old

She doesn't even have any real problems yet, she's 23. Can you imagine the ton of bricks that is going to hit her when she turns 30?

Right!

By 18 you know what VS is all about. You know these woman model in nothing but undies & nighties. You know boys wack off to this "catalog". WTF did she think she was getting into when she entered the competition? Either she's mentally "special" or the dumbest biatch on earth. I've known downs kids that knew what VS was. (Used to TA at a school for special kids) Same goes for Maxim and FHM. They're basically the soft core version of a Playboy. She knew exactly what she was modeling. She went all fundie & decided it was the evil corp's fault. It's woman like her that give the rest of us a bad name.

Own up to your shiat & go away ya twunt.

Well, you get the point.  As the list of sins, the degree to which people have supposedly been taught to be ashamed of their bodies is pretty far down the list.

She believes she is better off not modelling for Victoria Secret. This realization would have eluded her had she not won the competition and seen where that career was headed and what was in store for her personal mental health. So that is why God let her win. So she would reform and find a better life, I guess, one that she is happy with, so who are we to judge? And if what she says is true, it's better to be grateful to God for the circumstances surrounding her realization, which for all we know, by now, she is grateful she quit that life. She can choose whatever life she wants. We're not supposed to judge her for being a model, so we judge her for electing not to be a model? That is farked. Not surprisingly on Fark.

No we commend her for not wanting to model any more. Its a sleezy, soul crushing industry. We judge her for the abject stupidity in being the only person on earth  not knowing what modeling entails.

In her new book "I'm No Angel," the 23-year-old claims she "felt like a piece of meat" working for Victoria's Secret and opted to trade in her lingerie for a quiet life in Montana.

She competed in the Victoria's Secret Angel Search competition. What kind of business, pray tell, did she think she was getting herself into?

Of course, at 23 she's much older and wiser than she was at 19, and it is a woman's prerogative to change her mind...

'God, why did you have me win the Victoria's Secret Angel competition if it was going to make me feel this way? I'm not honoring my husband. I just want answers!'"

Once again, no one is accusing her of being crazy, and most applaud her decision to quit.  That does not change the fact shes dumb as a f-ing rock and is selling a book on the basis like shes some revolutionary whistle blower.
