What's wrong with watching a show that's funnier than any sitcom on the Networks?

2013-04-26 11:22:55 AM
The like scripted television more than reality TV?

2013-04-26 11:23:16 AM
I've never watched an entire episode of American Idol or Duck Dynasty.
It seems everybody around here gets a raging boner for Duck Dynasty so I gave it a try...Christ, how farking stupid can a show be? A friend asked if I watched it then explained the basic premise is that it's a bunch of rednecks acting like rednecks. Hell, I see that everyday when I walk out my door, why would I want to subject myself to it in the privacy of my home,

I have yet to meet one person who doesn't love Duck Dynasty. Even I love Duck Dynasty, and I hate watching television.

/Jase FTW!

My parents watch it and love it. Therefore, it can't possibly be worthwhile.

/They nearly lost babysitter privileges for letting my toddler watch  Toddlers and Tiaras. No kid needs to be traumatized that way.

Duck Dynasty: Because if we used REAL actors people would know it's just a hacky rehash of 50-year-old sitcom plots.

I tried watching it when I was at my sister's house, it's just people acting stupid for TV.  What appeal is there in that?

2013-04-26 11:27:43 AM
Nearly everyone in my family watches this. I don't see the appeal.

2013-04-26 11:28:30 AM
DD is a fun show to watch even if it's all staged and scripted etc...

Unless you don't watch TV to be entertained for some reason

2013-04-26 11:28:37 AM
I've never watched it. However, I know every person in the show from watching The Soup or from the Youtube interview links from the show posted on Facebook. The people in the show appear to understand their time is limited in the spotlight and know how to take advantage of every opportunity possible.

Ask Honey Boo Boo and Mama.

No my friend you asked the wrong question. It is not what the hell is wrong with us, but what the hell is wrong with network TV?

2013-04-26 11:29:20 AM
At least I can let my 12 year old watch it without fear of nasty situations or foul language (or should I say "fowl" language?)

it's stupid, but it's got it's funny moments.

2013-04-26 11:29:30 AM
Don't blame me, I don't have cable (but I do have a tv, so no smug).  Honestly, during the week, the two worst nights for television have been Wednesday and Friday nights.  Friday night is obvious because it's assumed that everyone is out.  Wednesday, I don't know why it's a bad night for television (or it is without cable).  The best thing I found, and I use 'best' loosely, is The Middle, Modern Family and Suburgatory.  Modern Family is actually enjoyable.  The Middle I have found to be growing on me, and Suburgatory...I haven't quite figured out what that show is, beyond 30 minutes a week for me to fantasize about that red head.

Wednesday is a slow night when Modern Family reruns.

i like shows like storage wars and pawn stars, but duck dynasty is too much for me.  the show has no point, no reason to exist.  i suppose there are worse shows out there (i've thankfully never seen jersey shore or honey booboo) but duck dynasty is the worst "reality" show i've ever seen.  it's just painful to watch it's so stupid and pointless.

2013-04-26 11:31:07 AM
rednexploitation.

2013-04-26 11:31:37 AM
Having watched Duck Dynasty and American Idol, my opinion is that this is really an indictment of our television viewing options in general.  And if it is an indictment of our television options in general, isn't that an indictment of our American society as a whole?  Well, I'm not going to sit here and let you bad mouth the United States of America with your BBC and your hockey.  Gentlemen.

2013-04-26 11:33:41 AM
I have only seen a few episodes, and I agree it is scripted, fake whatever, but few shows on TV have made me laugh uncontrollably like Duck Dynasty.  The episode where Phil builds the plastic playhouse for his granddaughters had me laughing my ass off.

2013-04-26 11:34:11 AM
People like watching stupid worthless redneck hicks to feel better about their lot in life. News at 11.

Haven't seen it, probably never will. Is it more fake or less than Top Gear? I say that not to rip on that show (a particular fave), but as a watermark.

Just as fake but with looser scripting, they found some good over the top rednecks with too much money, then they give them typical redneck situations and film it.  It can be really funny. It can also be really really dumb.

2013-04-26 11:49:17 AM
Don't blame me. I "cut the cord" nearly three years ago. Didn't watch that lame "Idol" show either. Was listening to Stu Shostak interviewing Earl Hamner (creator of "The Waltons") online on "Stu's Show" Wednesday evening.

2013-04-26 11:49:57 AM
I tried it but it was so clearly scripted that it just wasn't worth the time.  If I'm going to watch something scripted I'd at least like it to be well written - not just a series of wacky scenarios with wacky rednecks that end up lernin us all that family is what makes it all worth it.

It's cornier than an early 90s sitcom.

2013-04-26 11:50:19 AM
Haters gonna hate. Besides, if other networks would come up with some must-see programming, then stories like this wouldn't happen, would they?

/kinda jonesing for more Gold Rush and Moonshiners

Fair enough. I mean, scripted television is scripted television,

Except one is presented as real and the other is presented as scripted with writing credits.

once again - I can usually tell a show sucks shiat just based upon who on my facebook feed is talking about it.

the friends of mine who love this show universally have terrible taste.

Hey, I think it's a great show, Jack.

2013-04-26 12:00:14 PM
You'e got to watch it and understand that the one older Duck Commander founding guy was a first-string quarterback in college ahead of Terry Bradshaw but he chose a business career over football and he has an MBA.

Their wives are smoking hawt, too.
These aren't stupid people.
They're just acting all bumpkins for the money and the yuks.
These folks are all each smarter than any 50,000 of their viewers combined.

2013-04-26 12:01:46 PM
I don't watch it, but every single guy I work with does.

I don't get the appeal.

2013-04-26 12:02:07 PM
Not saying it's a great show, but was on in that time slot that's better?

About the same appeal as watchng some other people acting stupid like on '2 1/2 Men' or 'How I Met Your Mother'?

Oh it's scripted and formulaic, but I think there is a lot of ad libbing going on as well.

I don't seem to like the kind of people who don't like Duck Dynasty.

Nobody here has mentioned that they end every episode summing up the lesson learned that day (kind of like Doogie Howser MD), with the entire family enjoying a meal at the same table after first giving thanks.  That's part of the draw.

2013-04-26 12:05:16 PM
This is why we can't have nice things.

2013-04-26 12:06:38 PM
I hate how southern culture is a big sell right now (even SyFy as a southern ghost hunters show). While Duck Dynasty at least doesn't make them all look like idiots, it still reinforces a stereotype.

StrikitRich: What's wrong with watching a show that's funnier than any sitcom on the Networks?

That's the thing: the networks did come up with concepts like this. They did it DECADES ago. You can catch them on Nick at Nite and TV Land with the bonus of skilled writing and acting that still stands up a little today if that's your thing.

People are enamored with Duck Dynasty because they've been led to believe those idiots are real people doing real things, which makes it funnier than other shows on TV. Even those who concede the show is scripted still try to defend some tiny-yet-nonexistent element of "realism" just to keep from admitting they got duped into loving a cheap knockoff of the same ol' thing.

I about lost it when I saw clips of an episode where two of the bearded idiots got themselves handcuffed and--surprise surprise--lost the key! Holy Jack Tripper that shiat was considered hack back in the 70s. Since then I've seen clips of them in a coffee shop that Seinfeld handled in the 90s, shopping for prom dresses that Steven Keaton would've rolled his eyes at in the 80s, and running a restaurant which was played out when the Three goddamn Stooges were doing it.

If you defend Duck Dynasty you have no right to complain about the state of modern TV. It embodies everything you hate about the networks yet, somehow, you can't even see it when it's right in front of you.

I like the one where the get into the Espresso.

I don't like the one where they get all preachy at the end of the show and try to wrap all their experiences up in some self-righteous redneck superiority screed.  Oh wait, that is every show.

2013-04-26 12:26:42 PM
The writers on these shows are Ivy leaguers.
Kind of explains a lot of things, actually.
This same crop of Ivy leaguers have also been wrecking the country's future, too.

Have at it, idiots.

Yeah, the guys that work there are all pretty smart, I think most of them have their Masters. They're also really religious, but in a way that is not fundie, just loving Jesus. The good kind of religious. The show's pretty funny, actually.

So much THIS. I have never watched it, never wanted to, but was thinking about tuning in to see what the big deal was. Now I KNOW I won't be tuning in. Sounds corny.

Because faith is damned embarrassing to your kind and it shouldn't be shown on TV.
Like sex. It's just perverted, right?

My roomate loves this show Ill ocasionaly laugh but it seems way too staged. On Wednesdays I am watching The Americans. Kinda like the whole early 80s deep mole soviet spy thing.
