LasersHurt: Felgraf: And not to send death threats to the family of the potential perpetrator.

Yeah because nobody has ever done dumb shiat like this before.

Generally the FBI doesn't, no.

/Well, okay, I'm discounting J. Edgar.

The FBI probably refrains from death threats, sure, but I bet they tend to have a leg up on the internet as far as "arresting and prosecuting" people who turned out to be innocent. Nobody is beyond reproach in that sense, and then you're standing there comparing "death threats" and "arrest and months of prosecution and jail time", and I'm not comfortable choosing one over the other as a better outcome.

Felgraf: And also not to publicaly label/finger the suspect until they were almost 100% certain.

Richard Jewell frowns on this statement.

I don't know... some reddit thing... supposedly showing true love after 11 years of marriage or something...

BafflerMeal: Basically all of the inherent flaws with a message board that allows up voting, down voting, and reputation scores are present in this.

Crowd sourcing in this fashion defaults to the loudest and toughest accounts, groups prevailing.  Not the most accurate.

So farking much this.  What the self important CHILDREN of reddit (and here too) don't seem to realize is that; everyone says it =/= truth.

Frankly, in an age where the vast majority of reddit can't accurately define the word "evidence", and where those same people don't understand the difference between causation and correlation, I don't really want to rely on them or any similar group to investigate anything.

So long as law enforcement takes these places and the information they bring with a grain of salt, I'm fine.  At any point where reddit or Anon or whoever is taking material to the police which is then being used in court... that's scary.

Also, seriously people, do you know what the demographics are for reddit users?  8/10 high school.  1/10 working professionals under 35.  1/10 random demo.  We are talking about 90% children and IT help desk.  Do you really want these people investigating... anything?

Sin_City_Superhero: megarian: Does subby know about porn?

Cause the internets have porn, too... Which is nice.

There's porn on the interwebs? Are you sure? I haven't seen any. Must be hidden away in some dark corner of the intertubes, huh?

It is.

And you have to get through this guy ...

i1222.photobucket.com

to see any of it.

So, good luck.

That seems like a foolish thing to post.

I mean I get your point, but what, "wrong once, wrong forever"?

When you're wrong 99% of the time, yeah, I think it is okay to completely discount any opinions in the future. They were wrong, over and over again, and show no remorse for any trouble they caused. Screw 'em. Ignore them in the future as enough is enough.

Show your work, 99%? I'm sure you have data for this.

Also, who is "they"? Is there a specific internet group you're referring to? Are you referring to the entire population of the internet as "they"?

They is the entirety of those who make wild speculations and the number is indeed pulled from my ass (and I figured it was obvious) but probably close enough to the sad real number. The number is probably higher if you count all the mistaken speculations offered online, it is probably closer to the five nines that companies try to achieve for uptime. Either way, the number is drawn straight from my ass to illustrate a point - what percentage would be good enough for you? Any number greater than 0% is unacceptable in my view.

It's good to see that you support wild speculation and accusations that have the power to cause harm though. You're a part of the problem and you admit it. Thank you for your honesty though the world would be a better place without you.

And no, you're free to look, I don't engage in the witch hunts nor make accusations about people committing crimes. I don't even speculate concerning their political or religious views. I wait patiently for the results and admit that I don't know.

Speculation with the potential to cause harm is the point. That you can't differentiate is telling. Carry on...
