Many years ago, I saw Desmond Tutu on The Dennis Miller Show.  Miller asked him his opinion on Bush.  Tutu replied, "I don't know the man, but Bono says he's all right."

Unlikeliest. Answer. Ever.

I've seen several clips of Bono praising Bush for his humanitarian efforts.

He doesn't have to live here. He's married to a dude though. Why would he "come around" on a president who's anti-gay marriage just because it doesn't affect him personally?

He's been living in the Atlanta area for the better part of 30 years so, yes, he is invested in the American political dynamic.

"At the Kennedy Center concert we spent some time in the intermission with the President, George Bush, and he was an amazingly informed about AIDS," John recounted. "He treated us with such kindness. I had so much respect for him, especially when the PEPFAR thing was announced when he gave 15 billion dollars to AIDS. He knew what he was talking about." - Elton John, 2004 Kennedy Center Honors

And even that was tainted because it couldn't be use on the C of the ABC's of AIDS prevention. Even the best thing Bush did was f*cked by the Jesusification of the GOP.

Indeed, I myself have spent countless hours in front of my computer screen mocking Bono's charitable work for the pointless grandstanding it really is.

When pondering quoting 80's lyrics you may be quick to point out that it's nobody's business but your own, however on a less subjective note we should turn as per usual to the Asians. Dan Sing with Miisilf news agency takes a break from his regular column "Love Calling" writing from his hole in the wall apartment about a study conducted earlier this year. Going under the guise "Congo Man" online to seek opinions about serial 80's quoters gets reactions from "It's so cruel" to "Come on, come on now anyone who does that will be dead on arrival at the dating scene." One celebrity respondent talked freely under the guise of anonymity during a break from shooting. "Stars such as myself can get away with such nonsense only it private." So instead of wondering why the newscasts report that it's hot in the city but cooler in rural climes you should go on quoting those lyrics. White wedding.

I'm sure W is great on a personal level.
You know, he's probably nice to animals, good with kids, a super neighbor...
But that doesn't mean he should ever have been near the presidency.

And another idiot is heard from. Bono said Bush was a great guy and President and it bothered him that Bush didn't receive more respect in the US. He praised Bush for his work in preventing AIDS in Africa.

So I guess Bono knows a whole lot about GW than some 'wad on Fark - namely: you.

I don't know enough about Bush the elder to really say much about him outside of his presidency, but Bush the lesser is one of the most detestable people on the planet. Being a "nice guy" doesn't excuse him from the blood he has on his hands or the destruction he caused to our economy. He's one of the few people that makes me hope that there is a Hell, because he will never get what he deserves in this lifetime.

You know how it is, you start one little war and people forget all the nice things you've done...

It's a good thing the new president immediately pulled us out of Iraq and Afghanistan and closed down Gitmo.....

What celebrities mean by "friend", and what politicians mean by "friend", and what normal humans mean by "friend", are all different things. I think Bush just means they've become amiable.

Wouldn't Cheney be more to blame for those things? ( the power behind the throne, in other words)

/ I viewed Bush more as a sock puppet when he was in office
// he seems to be an OK person, I'm just glad he's not serving as President anymore

Cheney might have pulled Bush's strings but the buck still stops with him. Bush isn't any less culpable just because he was a puppet.
