Gunny Highway: Scientific progress goes *boink*
pag1107: Rosalind Franklin still left out...
thurstonxhowell: pag1107: Rosalind Franklin still left out...No, she wasn't.
Begoggle: Step 1:Steal your work from a womanStep 2:Nobel Prize!
phyrkrakr: They gave the Nobel to everybody but the girl, who died in 1958, five years before the prizes were awarded.
PC LOAD LETTER: They stole the vast majority of their ideas from Franklin (including the feedback she gave them on why their internal phosphate backbone was incorrect), and scooped her with minimal or negligible credit, depending on how you view it. It's really that simple. I have known several people who knew them more than just in passing. Watson and Crick were farking assholes of the highest order. No one is surprised they stooped to the level they did to get their paper out first. They would have never gotten the paper out without Franklin. Decades later, they throw her a bone and say that she would have shared in the prize. If they barely gave her credit in the paper, they certainly would never have shared a thing with her.
PC LOAD LETTER: The basic problem is that they barely acknowledged her existence after they published.
emotion_lotion: I remember hearing a story of how they took acid and had a vision on what the structure would look like before they saw the actual structure. One of them did an interview where he clarified this as before they claimed they were all drunk when they came up with it.But now I guess it is all bull.
you have pee hands: There's a pretty good book out about their story. It takes some concentration to read though because Watson sort of expects the reader to be able to follow his logical inferences and he never, ever explains the same thing twice.
