Anyone appearing not to be soused out of their mind should be reported to the authorities immediately.

Yeah, I don't think the Boston Marathon bombers had any particular beef with the Boston Marathon.  It was a gathering with a lot of people in a relatively small space.  I think that motivated them more.

Maybe they're just using the Boston bombing as an excuse to boost their concession sales.

1) Ban backpacks and coolers
2) Double the prices at the concession stands
3) Profit!!

Spent last weekend walking around the MotoGP races with a backpack. Can't even begin to imagine how miserable it would have been without it. Amazingly enough no one blew up.

So much this.

Last time I went (2006), they'd banned sunscreen, and it was expensive in the infield. Fortunately I don't burn but my companions who are not as melanin enhanced as me had to shell out for a bottle. I don't remember how much exactly it was, but I know they were fussing about it.

I've been to the infield about six years straight now but I'm out this year due to pregnant woman. In those years I only remember one fairly tight security check. I'm sure they'll increase security to some extent but I think it's more cosmetic just to make sure people don't stay at home. There's really not much you can do at events like this but quit having them and that's not happening.

One thing about the Derby infield is the mass exodus after the race. Going through the tunnel makes you feel kind of helpless. Somebody could get away with murder in that mess.

Also... Mint juleps? Hats? Forget all that. Best tradition at Derby.

Indeed.   The 5K event I'm going to this weekend has instituted a new more restrictive bag check policy in response to Boston - everything has to be packed into transparent bags.  Because a thousand morons crawling through mud in nowheresville Indiana is such a tempting target...

Almost making it worse, this is one of those races that's crammed to the gills with 'be a super-elite badass warrior' type PR.  Evidently even the greatest warriors in history trembled in the face of already dead/captured idiots wielding pressure-cookers.

Which is exactly what should happen. When people stop going because of their ridiculous rules and scams like mentioned above, banning sunscreen and then selling it back to you for twenty times the normal price, maybe the owners will start getting the hint. But I have been waiting for this for years and years over things like $10 hot dogs, and people just keep showing up and paying over inflated prices, so you might as well get used to it.

Too bad the same energy used to get hundreds or thousands of people together in the same place to do some stupid flash mob isn't used to do something that would make a difference.

People still do these things?  I would think that it would be safer not to participate considering that someone could target those rather easily.

yes because the boston marabomb was done by randos and then to kill time cnn speculated that the derby could be a target, we should ban everything.

This.  And that.

I'm running the Pittsburgh Marathon (the half, actually) next weekend and they've been scrambling to completely overhaul their security.  They are discouraging backpacks and are giving the runners a clear plastic bag to put their stuff into for the bag check.  Why they didn't do this in the past is beyond me.

I don't think they had anything against the marathon per se, but there was something particularly nasty and cruel about bombing the finish line.

I thought large purses is why owners enter their horses in the Derby.

That's what happened at the Belmont. Used to be $2 to get in and bring your own cooler.

But they banned coolers, not for security reasons, but because of all the drunken 20-something's on the apron screaming obscenities up at the grandstand crowd every year. Like me.
