I kind of felt bad for Gino Smith, but he believed the hype. And he's ugly. Damn that kid is ugly.

Exactly. He declined to talk to ESPN or any other outlet after the draft and left at around the 28th pick, too.

Don't worry, I'm sure the Lions will take him with their 2nd round pick.  Then, they'll take Denard Robinson with their 3rd round pick.  They seem to really like taking these super talented players with huge question marks.

Hey,college football watchers, are there any respectable safeties or corners that might still be available when the Redskins pick at 54?

The best line from last night ESPN broadcast was Gruden saying "Geno Smith might have a lot of friends at ESPN, but he's got few in the NFL.".

Actually, I don't know if I have a problem with that. It's highly possible that he might fall to late 2nd rd, early 3rd. Why would anyone want to wait around that long, more-or-less by themself in the room, just so that ESPN and NFL Network can keep changing showing pictures of them sitting around doing nothing?

Honey badger? I don't care, I still want him on my team. Would make an okay nickel back. Unlike actual nickleback

Man ESPN was farking annoying with their Manti Watch last night. "We're in Manti Range now"..."we'll Baltimore definitely needs a LB"..."why didnt anyone draft Te'o?".

Talk about over hyped draft picks. ESPN might explode of the Jets draft him. Tebow can use his pretend throwing skills to toss it to Te'o's pretend girlfriend and ESPN will wet their pants.

Is there any reason why he should show up tonight? They don't parade guys across stage after the first round, do they?

He should do it to show the teams that he can handle that kind of pressure. One of the biggest questions about Geno was how would he handle things not going his way. He seems to have shown Vince Young levels of maturity by not dealing with it. It is not like ESPN and NFL Network will stop analyzing every little thing he does when he starts playing. He will have to deal with that for however long he is relevant in the NFL.

They go across the stage if they're actually at the RCMH, no matter what round they go in. Last year there were a couple guys who walked on stage in the second round, if I remember correctly.

If DJ Swearinger falls to 54 you should do backflips. Kid is an absolute beast.
Cypriot is likely the next safety off the board then swearinger. Idk about any of the remaining corners.

Have you seen the 60 Minutes special on Rodgers? Awesome QB, funny guy, but possibly the most overly sensitive human being in professional sports. And not afraid to show it.

I guess my point was that he knew that prospective employers were watching and was able to keep up a good face while it was happening. If Geno started cracking during this kind of situation, what does that say about him as a future leader? For his sake, I hope that he lands late in the second round with a team that has an established veteran QB that he can learn from for a year or two.

I didn't watch the draft, but seeing that was their pick (and that the pick they traded down on was Tavon Austin, who they need) the Bills staff must've had a big quibble before dad came out and said "Kids, if you're going to fight then I'll make the decision that makes none of you happy" and took Manuel.

If my team's GM made a draft decision based on if a particular player let ESPN follow him around, I'd be insanely pissed.

The guy is the size of Cam Newton.  Maybe this is the offensive scheme they are looking to go for?  This was the only logic I could see behind such a decision.  It's the way of the new NFL.

Nobody needs Tavon Austin.  He's a Tedd Ginn/DeSean Jackson clone that may have a productive season or two.  But he's just not big enough to last long.

I like Mike & Mike's take on it this morning: basically, any of us normal folks who had been built up to believe we'd get a big promotion or something, only to have to sit through a several-hours long board meeting and find out that, no, sorry, nice suit you bought but no, not gonna happen...we'd probably react the same way.  And now team that's spent months evaluating him is suddenly going to say, "Well, our crack team of scouts have spent six months saying we should get this guy at pick 3 on day 2, but he looks sad, so hell with him."

It also has to be in a place where the media and fans won't immediately jump on every single perceived slight or misstep. ie - not Philly or NY. Which, I'm assuming, means that the Jets will take him and hand him the starting spot in Week 3.

DeSean has the problem doubled because he spent most of the last 3 years catching passes from a QB who releases the ball too low to consistently throw over the line.  Smaller quick guys can obviously be successful if you can get them the ball quickly in space (Sproles, Welker, etc.) but you don't want to have to make a 170 pound guy jump for the ball over the middle where he's setting himself up to get destroyed by a MLB.

JohnnyRebel88: It's the way of the new NFL.

I don't know about that -- there's been running QB's going back forever; even in the pass-happy West Coast era there are guys like Elway and Steve Young who were known for their legs as much as their arms.  And in the more recent generation of running QB's, a lot of them couldn't keep up their running ways for very long, and evolved into better passers later into their career. (See McNabb, Donovan; McNair, Steve; Vick, Michael.)  That's probably what we'll see with Cam, Russell Wilson, RGIII, and Kaepernick.

How can he?  He's 5'9", 175.  He'll be a good kick returner and deep threat, but given the track record of WRs his size I don't know why anyone would want him, let alone the Rams who need so much more than just a one-dimensional player.  The Bills were smart, and I think EJ Manuel is going to be the best QB from this draft.

2013-04-26 09:51:25 AM
Yeah, Geno is the biggest fail. Not because he fell, but the way he acted after he did. Courtney Upshaw toughed in out last year. Ryan Williams the year before. Farking whiner.

Not even close.

They were both mobile (and Young could just plain run), but both were known far more for their passing.

I dont see why this is a huge surprise for ESPN. As x-players and x-coaches they should know the type of hazing that will take place during training camp on a guy with a history like this.

And, whats even more surprising, is that they dont start airing the articles about how he got DESTROYED in the BCS championship game by bigger faster players.

Maybe Doug Marrone is more rational than people are giving him credit for?  (This is not to say Nassib is bad or drafting him would be irrational; but as a Seahawks fan who has read countless articles speculating about Pete Carroll's eagerness to reunite Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush and Patrick Turner up in Seattle, I lean in the direction of giving head coaches credit for valuing team-building over blind loyalty to their college programs.  Other than Steve Spurrier.)

It caused Lou Holtz to say "Well, shun of a bisch".
