UPDATE: CAT WARS: RETURN OF THE PUKI
Round 1
Unable to sit still, I kept going out and walking around calling my little lost pal about every 10 minutes. Around 8:30, I spotted a movement in the brush across the road, and Puk trotted out into the road. Fortunately, there was a rare break in the traffic.
So I coaxed him across the rest of the way, and he decided to be an idiot an run around every direction but towards me. But at least I knew the little sh*tbird was still alive.
After about 5 minutes of calling and pleading, I got him to come within reach and grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and gathered him into my arms. Just then, 4 cars in a row came screaming down the hillbilly highway at about 60 MPH (this is 10 feet away from me) and sent him into full cat-sh*t panic. I tried to endure the pain of my ripped flesh, but I failed. Torn from elbow to fingertip, and wearing a newly shredded t-shirt, I had to let go, and he was gone again in an instant.
End of round 1.
Round 2.
I knew the little bastard was still close by, so I kept going out and walking around calling. Once again, I heard his familiar plaintive mew, and spotted him at the neighbors door looking at me and crying. Now, why that dumbass cat goes to the wrong door and then cries to me next door is a complete other mystery, but I digress...
After another 10 minutes of coaxing, cajoling, and generally making myself sound like a complete idiot to anyone listening, I managed to get hold of him again, and before anything else sent him into hysterics, get him back in the house.
End of round 2.

So... to recap...

Puki is safe at home again for the nonce.
I'm having a drink and trying to staunch the bleeding. Right hand got the worst of it, but both hands and arms sustained serious damage.
I discovered that I need to pick up some bandaids tomorrow.

/thank you all for your good wishes and thoughts; I have to admit I was pretty upset over that dumbass cat
//now... anyone want to donate blood?

yobbery: spinach gunk: Buddy sez Jack can share his Little Green Bunny, is nice to has a fuzzy when you don't feel so good.

How is the Budster this week?

He's OK, thanks.  He's been doing very well on the prednisone, but we've been gradually stepping down the dose to bring the trial period to a gentle close.  He's still quite all right, but is noticeably pickier about food and seems more tired with the decreased dose.  We saw the vet on Tuesday for a followup.  Says once we're done with this round of prednisone, we'll monitor him closely to see how he does, but won't put him back on it just yet.  As long as he's eating and pooping all right, we don't need to do much.  Too much pred can damage his system.

This type of cancer of the anal gland is not easy to know what to do with.  It can spread quickly, meaning that by the time the rectal tumour is large enough to be discovered, it's probably already begun to make its way elsewhere in the body.  Surgical removal of the tumour isn't a bad idea, but the chance of quick recurrence is very high, and there is a very real chance he could lose total control of his bowel movements (which I don't mind, I have no problem looking after that kind of thing, but the few times he's ever had accidents in the house he's been so mortified and upset with himself that I think daily occurrences of uncontrolled poop would break his heart).  Then he would need radiation therapy after that.  Chemotherapy is a less invasive option, but is not a cure, and is not guaranteed to improve his prognosis very much.  The cost/benefit ratio both types of treatments is frustratingly un-encouraging.

So, we are going to wait and see for a little while before deciding exactly what to do next.  I haven't totally ruled anything out.  On the outside, Buddy looks pretty good, he's nice & plump and his fur is soft & shiny.  He still enjoys walkies and treats and snuggles.  He'll go back to the vet once a month to get his anal glands expressed to keep things comfy down there and monitor the growth.  I give him a teaspoon of plain yoghurt every other morning, he really likes it and it eases the constipation.  We could do an ultrasound to see if the cancer has spread anywhere, but there isn't much point in that, until/unless we decide to do surgery or chemo.  If we're left with just palliative comfort-type medications and pain management, then so be it.  But it's too soon to know what to do right now.  I'm really hoping his appetite will stick around after the prednisone finishes.  He has enough to last until Tuesday.  Not much to do until then but wait & see, and especially to enjoy every day as much as we can.

TL;DR: Buddy's OK for now, but we won't know what do to for him until we see how he feels when his meds wear off next week.

Woof!

RadicalEd: So it looks like Tola may have hyper thyroidism. We're sending her blood work out to get a definitive answer. I see pills are an option, but both of my cats hate their mouths being touched, and she's a bit skittish already. Has anyone done the surgery or radioactive iodine treatment, or know about them? I know its early yet, but more information never hurts from first hand experiences.

Radioactive iodine should be used only as a last resort. We looked into it for Meep since we thought she would be impossible to pill. The two vets we consulted were adamantly against it unless we exhausted all other avenues.

The primary reason is that once it's done there's no going back. Hyperthyroidism can mask renal issues, and if it turns out the cat has (or later develops) renal issues you can tweak the treatment to find the best balance between thyroid and kidney values. You can't do that once you've done RI.

Also, a small percentage turn out to be hypOthyroid due to incorrect dosing. Then you end up with a cat you need to pill anyway.

The best treatment is the pill if you can manage it. I have no experience with the cream. We never had to go there.  It turned out that we were able to hide Meep's meds in treats 90% of the time, and pilling her was much easier than we thought it would be.

Spiralmonkey: Advice please.  It's 22:12 here so too late to call the vet, but my boy Henry has a lump on his back, right between his shoulder blades.  I've just noticed it while giving scritches.  It's about 1.5" round, about 0.5" high, right under the surface of the skin but doesn't seem to be attached to anything underneath.  He's not concerned by it and not in pain. Anyone else seen this on their furbuddy?  Insect bite of some kind?

Sounds like it could be a cyst. I wouldn't worry to much about it for now but it would be good idea to make a vet appt. tomorrow to get it checked out if it's still bothering you.

Well, I survived my appointment with the doctor today. It was kind of odd, his name was
"Twelve of Fifteen" and he wore a shiny metallic suit.

He said my "assimilation was proceeding according to plan", and then he laughed with this
weird cackle.

Actually, he downloaded everything that had happened since they implanted it. He showed
me that I had had a fibrillation event on April 3rd that lasted about 3 seconds
before the pacemaker asserted control and got everything back into line. It was a little strange
to be able to see all these waveforms; 24 hours a day for the past month,

He did some tweaking of the setup, and said that I have a 500% margin of error in my configuration.

I hope he's as good as he seemed.

Hello everyone!  Long time-no see!  I have a share:

We're doing "You Can't Take It With You" at school, which requires kittens.  We didn't have any onhand, so I adopted a pregnant cat at our local shelter, got a vet and some local businesses to donate goods and services, and now we're growing our own props!  They will be adopted by our theatre patrons as part of our play.

In the meantime, Mama and babies are living at my house.  (My husband is a puddle around them.)

They have a clean, warm bed and lots of food, water, litter, etc.

Yesterday, Mama moved them from their clean, warm bed to a dirty rug in front of the toilet.  Any ideas why?  Should I move them back?  I know that I should certainly clean the rug...

Aww, poor little guy.  Maybe he has a little tummy bug?  Have you checked his teeth/mouth for anything sore-looking?  Is everything coming out the other end like usual?  If he hasn't pooped in over 24 hrs and starts acting lethargic, do take him to vet asap, could be an intestinal obstruction.

Hopefully it's nothing that serious though, and hopefully it will solve itself.  But if he goes for more than another day without eating, I would definitely take him to the vet to see what's up.  He is obviously not feeling right about something.  How old is Jack btw?  Might not be a bad idea to have a blood panel done especially if he qualifies as a "senior" (8+).  That can detect all kinds of issues, sometimes before they even exhibit symptoms, which is good because many health conditions can be managed much more easily when caught early.

Yeah it's kind of hard to take when your pal who has in the past sought out such delicacies as cat poo, used kleenexes, and panty hose, refuses something as lovely as fresh chicken.  Don't you wish they could talk sometimes!!!  Hugs & smoochies to sweet Jack, fingers crossed you find out what's wrong and he feels much better soon!!!

Yes, and a wee bit embarrassed. I try to do a good job. But I do not really think I do anything out of the ordinary. Really.

I spent the last 5 years dealing with a layer of hell supervisor.  Finally got fired after said supervisor decided I was the problem, not the lousy economy or his constant goal-post resetting to avoid paying bonuses.  I land a job doing the same stuff in a much more stringent field, and suddenly I'm the belle of the ball.  Everyone here acts like I walk on water, and they've never had anyone act like me, care as much, follow through as well, etc. etc.  It's been a tremendous salve to my ego.  I keep thinking at any moment, I will wake up and be back at my old nightmare of a job.

New kittens!

I discussed them a couple of days ago in a TFD thread and promised to get up photos for Caturday.

The story:

On Monday evening, a tenant told us that he heard kittens in his wall.  Sure enough, two kittens were in there.  We think they had been born or put into the attic and then had fallen down between the studs and couldn't get out.  Their mama was nowhere to be found.

So me and my Dad cut a hole in the wall and then made a loop of wire which was attached to the end of a stick to fish them out.  They're about three weeks old and we were really worried about the B&W guy, since one of his eyed was crusted shut with dirt and mucus.  We put warm water on that and cleaned his eye with a damp rag, and also antibacterial drops.  By morning, his eye had opened and it looks normal.  The remaining crust came off in the bath the next day - both were filthy.  They haven't been to the vet yet, but both appear 100% and are big eaters.

Here are some photos:

Lucky kitties.  They took the bath pretty well and both are friendly.  We're keeping them inside a utility room for now - plenty of shelter, food and water.  Plus a cozy bed and a couple of toys they're not interested in yet.  Both come right over to you, love to be held and petted, and purr a lot.  They might get adopted by family friends, but if not, we'll keep them.  They're going to make really nice pets.

I love that picture, but it always makes me want to cry.

I_fling_poo:
Same here.

I have wondered about that picture many, many times and have also wondered
how everything worked out with that kitten.

I wonder, too.  Poor thing.

A couple of years back, I took in one that someone must have dumped in the alley.  She was skin, bones and infections.  The vet pulled a few teeth.  The photo shows how she's missing part of her tail, too.  She had more hair than the one in the photo, but was still missing about 30% of her coat.  Though someone had socialized her because she loves people.

This is how it turned out:

lh3.googleusercontent.com

See, she has to lay on my stumpy legs and Hobbit feet.

There isn't always a happy ending.

Everyone enjoy Caturday and the next few Caturdays everyone.  I'll be up in Ohio for a few weeks with my dad getting some things taken care of and sorted out.  He's anti-computer, so no going on line while I'm up there.  Things will be taken care of down here while I'm gone, so I'm not concerned about that.  At least my car keys, slippers, shoes, and socks won't disappear or have cat hair all over them while I'm gone.

By the way, I just found one of your baby pictures. Hope you don't mind me sharing it here. What an adorable kid you were. :)

How are you feeling now that you've had your implant for a little while? Have any cyborgs come by to tell you you'll be assimilated?

OK, that picture got a loud enough laugh out of me that it woke mom up!

The posting earlier in the thread with the tissue paper "hat" dispenser with the
label saying "These are not hats" also got a *huge* laugh out of me. I was sitting
on the front porch, sacrificing the fatted stogie; and a couple in electric wheelchairs
were just passing when I saw that picture. I hope they didn't think I was laughing at them.

As for the implant, I go in Monday at 2pm for my initial check.
They're going to check the data collected and see if they need to tweak it.
I have to say, the difference in having it is amazing.
I cannot describe it. It's that huge of a difference.

I need that.  Three.  was a not so fun day today.

I had a call from a coworker in Seattle.  he tells me that he had dinner with the client and she commented about me.  Seems she heard that one of her employees was talking to me and he told her that 'she had 3 glasses of wine'.    well, excuse me.  I am AT HOME....it is my house, it is my free time, I will have a glass of wine on MY TIME.  I don't give a rats ass if you call me or not, it is MY FREE TIME.

I was not happy to hear the condescending tone in coworker's voice, he knew it.  I am beyond ticked.

My VP (of my group) is in town next week.  She will be in the office on the 30th.  convenient.  May be layoffs.  I am fully expecting it.

Yeah, I am ticked.  I'm going to wallow tonight, get up in the morning and go for a 2.5 mile walk (at least) and start to work on ME.

Boys got their Barkbox this week. Dyson (who hurt his leg last week) is doing better.

If you were in Europe, the comment would be "only three?" Americans can be so puritanical. Hubby is essentially a tea totaller. No tolerance for alcohol. (one drink and he is done)..so I have a higher tolerance..

A few of us from the office took a new colleague out for dinner. She was from Colorado and this was her first time out of the US. There were 8 for dinner so I ordered 3 bottles of red and 3 bottles of white for the table, enough so that no-one goes thirsty.

She *clutches pearls, sinks onto fainting couch* did a big number about how everyone in Europe is an alcoholic - way to make friends! Anyway, after a couple of glasses of Sauternes she told us all how she'd always had a thing for her sister's husband and she'd sent him nude selfies.

Unable to hold her drink, yes. Puritanical? Not do much.

The company I used to work for would take the female employees out for lunch on Secretary Day.
(if you were a woman you were a secretary, not to sexist) It was a free lunch and all you could
drink. We would get to the Yacht Club about noon and have lunch and by 3:00 we were no longer able to drive by 5:00 we would call a taxi to get everyone home. The next day the boss would end up sending someone to pick up everybody for work because our cars were still in the parking lot. My sister always wanted to know why we couldn't get them to take us out for breakfast then we could have the whole day off.

The Ice Queen: RadicalEd: So it looks like Tola may have hyper thyroidism.

Sherpa is a big help with hyperthyroidism.

My cat is hyperthyroid (Dx 2 months ago). She is on methiamazole and I actually dilute it in a tad bit of water and mix it in with her canned food. No issues :)

Should be dissolve (brain fried). Doesn't take a whole lot. I have a 3 cc oral syringe, usually put about 1/2 cc in and put the pill in :)

Spiralmonkey: Spiralmonkey: Advice please.

Thanks for that. Would a cyst be painful?  I'm going to get him an appointment asap anyway, he's not the sort of cat to get random ailments, he's usually incredibly healthy.

Cysts may or may not be painful. Is he an only cat? Occasionally my two have fought where a tooth or claw broke the skin of the other and an abscess formed. A couple were sore but some were not, especially if it was almost healed by the time I felt it.

Also make sure that you are current with your Tetanus shots.  They supposedly last 10 years, but if it has been 7 or 8 years or more since your last one it might be an excellent idea to get another one!  I heard about  a fellow who came down with Tetanus even though his last immunization was 8 or 9 years earlier.  (This was from a credible source -- a Veterinarian friend)

RadicalEd: My little girl cat, Tola, is at the vet today for a dental cleaning. Apparently her little heart beat is racing though, and they're doing a thyroid test before continuing to put her under for the cleaning. She was so scared to go this morning, huddled as small as can be and yowling her head off. Hard to believe a six pound cat can be so loud! So now I'm just worried at work! Hope my baby girl is okay.

Riktor had his teeth cleaned last year...after all the stuff I've read here (and I THANK YOU for sharing it!), I figured we could head a LOT of health issues off at the pass by doing so.
They did blood work beforehand, just to make certain he could tolerate the sedation (he was 10 at the time)...he came through with flying colors. Forgave me the minute we got home, too.
You're doing a Good Thing for Tola...even if she has her doubts about it...

Happy Caturday, everyone!

Target went to the vet for her first visit on Monday. She definitely had something going on in her eye, but some antibiotic ointment took care of it in short order. The vet also thinks that she's maybe 5-6 weeks old, not 6-8 weeks. Either way, she's doing just fine. She has, however, chewed through the cord of my earbuds. I'm thinking that the best way to get rich is to invent cat-proof earbuds. :D

And now, it's time to play Spot the Cat!i81.photobucket.com

Vol1210=4-24-13 from Strange Cosmos
Strange Quotes about Cats & Teenagers:
For all of you with teenagers or who had teenagers, you may want to know why they really have a lot in common with cats:
1. Neither teenagers nor cats turn their heads when you call them by name.
2. No matter what you do for them, it is not enough. Indeed, all humane efforts are barely adequate to compensate for the privilege of waiting on them hand and foot.
3. You rarely see a cat walking outside of the house with an adult human being, and it can be safely said that no teenager in his or her right mind wants to be seen in public with his or her parents.
4. Cats and teenagers can lie on the living-room sofa for hours on end without moving, barely breathing.
5. Cats have nine lives. Teenagers carry on as if they did.
