RadicalEd: yobbery: RadicalEd: So it looks like Tola may have hyper thyroidism. We're sending her blood work out to get a definitive answer. I see pills are an option, but both of my cats hate their mouths being touched, and she's a bit skittish already. Has anyone done the surgery or radioactive iodine treatment, or know about them? I know its early yet, but more information never hurts from first hand experiences.

Radioactive iodine should be used only as a last resort. We looked into it for Meep since we thought she would be impossible to pill. The two vets we consulted were adamantly against it unless we exhausted all other avenues.

The primary reason is that once it's done there's no going back. Hyperthyroidism can mask renal issues, and if it turns out the cat has (or later develops) renal issues you can tweak the treatment to find the best balance between thyroid and kidney values. You can't do that once you've done RI.

Also, a small percentage turn out to be hypOthyroid due to incorrect dosing. Then you end up with a cat you need to pill anyway.

The best treatment is the pill if you can manage it. I have no experience with the cream. We never had to go there.  It turned out that we were able to hide Meep's meds in treats 90% of the time, and pilling her was much easier than we thought it would be.

[www.smugmug.com image 600x450]

Thanks, that's really good to know! She might eat disguised pills - we'll have to experiment. The problem with pills is being on schedule, and that's a bit hard for us to make mornings. If she doesn't eat it, can't catch her to force it down, there's 9-10 hours she goes without a pill. So that's more of what I'm worried about.

We won't know till next week and the more comprehensive test comes back. Right now, she's chowing down and trying to get some rest. Poor restless, loudmouth kitty. The girl in question:

She's adorable.
I'm sure you'll figure out a routine with some experimentation (and maybe a little blood loss).

Methimazole (Tapazole) tastes horrible. If Meep would catch a taste she would turn her nose up at that flavor of treat  for at least a week, so we had to keep several yummy flavors on hand at all times. For a while the wife was drilling holes in treats with an x-acto knife. You do what ya' gotta do.

I need that.  Three.  was a not so fun day today.

I had a call from a coworker in Seattle.  he tells me that he had dinner with the client and she commented about me.  Seems she heard that one of her employees was talking to me and he told her that 'she had 3 glasses of wine'.    well, excuse me.  I am AT HOME....it is my house, it is my free time, I will have a glass of wine on MY TIME.  I don't give a rats ass if you call me or not, it is MY FREE TIME.

I was not happy to hear the condescending tone in coworker's voice, he knew it.  I am beyond ticked.

My VP (of my group) is in town next week.  She will be in the office on the 30th.  convenient.  May be layoffs.  I am fully expecting it.

Yeah, I am ticked.  I'm going to wallow tonight, get up in the morning and go for a 2.5 mile walk (at least) and start to work on ME.

Boys got their Barkbox this week. Dyson (who hurt his leg last week) is doing better.

[i112.photobucket.com image 800x600]

If you were in Europe, the comment would be "only three?" Americans can be so puritanical. Hubby is essentially a tea totaller. No tolerance for alcohol. (one drink and he is done)..so I have a higher tolerance..

That,s me... one 12oz beer and you can park me in a corner for about 24 hours....  and I work at a brewery...

The white boy (aka Dragon) was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism almost 18 months ago - it is easily controlled with the pills, I would not recommend any other treatment until you see how the medication works... I just dissolve his pill in a bit of warm water and put it in the cat food can for him to lick it clean (or you can add it to her food). If that does not work, you can try using a transdermal gel that you rub in her ears. Drop me an email (my login[nospam-﹫-backwards]liamg*com) if I can be of any further assistance...

Thanks Sherpa! We'll see how the results come down, but I'm pretty sure she'll have it. She was right in the middle of the gray/maybe range, and I'm not sure what else would elevate those levels that they might go back down.

Hopefully the water/food trick will work, but we'll cross that road when we get to it. She's so tiny though (5-6 lbs) and with so few teeth left. She had a hard time swallowing the pill pocket I gave her as a treat (Ivan was trying the allergy meds and she didn't want to be left out!).

More than likely, I'll just get vaporized

That's awesome! I had forgotten that was this week. At my old job (I was the office manager), I would get a case of beer from my co-workers. The current temp job (which is terrible, horrible no go POS) didn't even recognize their own admins, which is why I forgot about it. Just another reason to add to the column. So glad this assignment ends on Tuesday!

That's the same shape Meep was in. She was tiny and had only three teefs left in her teeny mouth. She was a real trooper despite her size.

Other than that I don't think my position will change much. As for those that are targeted it doesn't seem like anyone will be out of a job unless they don't like hand they're dealt.

I'm going to go take something to knock me out and hopefully not wake up until the ass crack of noon.

Here's a special one for QJ and Alien!

lilyspad:
Maybe we can get QJ, and Alien to show their cute little faces too???? :D

I'm here, I'm here.
It's been a busy day.
The momma unit celebrated her 88th birthday today.
I took her out for a late breakfast or early lunch (depending on your time zone).

She went with me yesterday to get her name added to the title of my van so that there
is some control on what happens with it in case I have some other health problem that
can't be solved with a bionic implant.

To do that, we both had to show office ID and they noticed that her drivers license would expire
today. In Indiana, DL's expire on your birthday and there's an extra fee if you don't renew it in time.

Well, that's no big deal, we're here at the BMV, she'll just renew it!
*bzzzzzttttt*

She couldn't pass the vision test. She hasn't driven since 2008 when her ophthalmologist told her to stop.
She's 100% blind in her left eye and +80% blind in her right eye.
They gave her like 5 different chances and she couldn't read any of the lines on the eye test.

"Sorry ma'am, we can't issue you another license. We can give you an ID card, though."

She's been moping around and periodically complaining about how she didn't think her eyesight
was so bad that they couldn't have given her a pass. It hasn't been pretty today.

Hopefully, my siblings will take her out running around for her birthday. That would give me
more time to participate in Caturday.

...and a cat-
