"If you only have two sexes, there's only a 50 percent chance that someone you meet will be of the right type," Orias said. With seven different sexes, however, a ciliate's chances of meeting Mr. or Mrs. Right increase to about 85 percent.

Knows all too well.

Billy Pilgrim already knew about this:

"One of the biggest moral bombshells handed to Billy by the Tralfamadorians, incidentally had to do with sex on Earth. They said their flying-saucer crews had identified no fewer than seven sexes on Earth, each essential to reproduction. Again: Billy couldn't possibly imagine what five of those seven sexes had to do with the making of a baby, since they were sexually active only in the fourth dimension."

If Farkers had seven sexes it would just mean rejection by five more sexes than now.

Wish the article explained what it means by 'sexes'. I get male and female, but what are the others and what makes them something other than male or female?

It.. explained it in the first sentence?

There is no "male" or "female". There are seven sexes or "types", and each type can successfully mate with any of the other 6 (but not it's own).

Article says the scientists conducted experiments by "depriving them of food to force them to mate sexually."

Sexual reproduction helps with evolution, but at the same time, I wish it didn't exist as separate sexes.  I'm someone whose brain didn't get built in a way that matches its body.

Myria: Sexual reproduction helps with evolution, but at the same time, I wish it didn't exist as separate sexes.

It's interesting to imagine, but who would advance civilization if there wasn't a different sex to not be attracted to them?
Imagine a world where Newton was busy having sex with his fellow hermaphrodites to create a formula, where Socrates couldn't get whatever genitalia out of his mouth long enough to speak.

Would we even have the wheel?

Type A is able to reproduce with type B, type C, type D, type E, type F, type G, or type H.  Type A cannot reproduce with another type A.

It's difficult for a lot of people to visualize, because we are used to thinking of sex as a process of inserting tabs into slots.  In fact, sex is really about combining DNA; how the DNA gets from one to the other is not particularly important.  This species has several different ways to do it, rather than just one like we have.

Smgth: More to the point, why does everything else only have two?

There are some slime molds that have as many as a dozen.

Multicellular organisms are generally restricted to two, but remember that the majority of species are single-celled, so we shouldn't think of "the way we do it" as normative for all living things.
