Gee. Imagine how terrible it would have been if something terrible that didn't happen, happened. Let's all sit around and think about it, until we are really frightened and angry at whoever we don't like.
Then, let's go kill them. Really expensively.

So, I read in some article that they on the spot decided to drive to NYC to do this, but they were running out of gas so they had to stop, and that's when the hostage escaped. My question is, how unlucky are they that the car they jacked didn't have enough gas to get more than 5 miles away? Or why did they stop so close to MIT where they just shot a guy? Idiots.

Seriously. Once they were identified, my brain has been unable to wrap itself around the whole thing. The only answer I can come up with is 'They're just kinda stupid'. I mean, can you come up with an answer better than that to any of these questions:

Why even do this sort of thing when the elder brother had been put on a watch list?
Why did they pick a target with tons of surveillance going on, both cameras and eye witnesses?
Why weren't they far away when the bombs went off?
Why did they think they would not be identified, considering the response we take to terrorism?
Why did they stay in Boston until they were identified?
Why did they think they'd stand a chance in hell of dropping another bomb?

I mean, really. They have to be kinda stupid for not considering any of those. I have my beef with how the government operates (e.g. where is my goddamn almost 2 month late tax return) but I respect them enough to be able to get their shiat together when it comes to this sort of thing.

Your flawed assumption is that at the point they dropped those bombs off, they were thinking rationally.

No Expectations: The scary thing is, with a just a little more planning, they could still be exploding bombs.

Not really, no. Because their entire plan was flawed from the get-go. They made sure they would be identified by planting the bombs during the middle of the Boston Marathon, where they would have surely been noticed by people in the crowd if not on camera (this is one of the most wired sports events in America, you know.) In addition, they were stupid enough to do this while not only under watch by the Feds for possible connections to terrorism in Chechnya, but openly bragged about their ideologies on social media.

They wanted to be caught so they could go out in a blaze of glory for their cause.

That's probably why they chose to use pressure cookers for their bomb casing, too. No pesky threads to screw caps on.

I'm not even joking. Many aspiring pipe bomb builders have ended up having premature explosions (Which I know many of you have experience with, you minute men you.) because the friction from the cap being screwed on ignited black powder residue on the threads.

I knew very soon, considering that there were two bombs, and fairly few deaths...and just seeing how relatively small the explosions looked...that these guys were bumbling idiots.  You read about suicide bombers in Iraq, it's, "67 dead, 42 wounded."  Here it was 3 dead, 170 wounded.  And as others have pointed out, they made it laughably easy to find them.  Yet had no inkling of that.

Idiots.  Which is good; someone who knew what he was doing would have inflicted far more casualties, and been far more likely to escape.

That tends to be because of two things:

1) They have easy access to heavy, military grade explosives and artillery shells left over from the Pre-Iraq War Iraqi Army, and funneled in from neighboring countries with an interest in seeing the non-believers dead.
2) They're not "building" bombs, they're just rewiring triggers to cell phones and timers.

That's why I have to roll my eyes at anyone who calls these guys "terrorists" in the same way the 9/11 hijackers were terrorists. No, these two brothers were spree killers. Idiotic spree killers who plans were pretty much;

Dzhokhar: Okay, we've carjacked this guy and his SUV. Now what?
Tamerlan: How many explosives do we have left?
Dzhokhar: A few.
Tamerlan: Then fark it. Let's bomb New York.

"It's 240 miles to New York.  We've got a gallon of gas, 3 pipe bombs and a pressure cooker.  We're the most wanted men in the country and we're driving a stolen car with a hostage inside."
"Hit it."

I'm still in shock that they were looking for a Brown student.

Wasn't there a link floating around a couple of days ago about how these two were framed, it was an inside job, and they were just patsies?

C'mon, media outlets...get yer damn stories straight.

hardinparamedic: The Incredible Sexual Egg: Honestly. These two don't know their asses from their elbows

The had a few pipe bombs on them.

mekki: pxlboy: FarkinNortherner: ringersol: If NYC was a *plan* and not just an impulse blathered out loud, you'd think they'd have headed there sooner.

Is there any evidence of anything even approximating to a plan in these two dumbfarks entire enterprise? The more we learn the more I'm astonished that the story of the Tsarnaev brothers didn't end with them blowing themselves up in their kitchen.

They went from master bomb makers and terrorists to being a couple of tools with a nebulous, poorly-thought-out plan.

That's why I have to roll my eyes at anyone who calls these guys "terrorists" in the same way the 9/11 hijackers were terrorists. No, these two brothers were spree killers. Idiotic spree killers who plans were pretty much;

Dzhokhar: Okay, we've carjacked this guy and his SUV. Now what?
Tamerlan: How many explosives do we have left?
Dzhokhar: A few.
Tamerlan: Then fark it. Let's bomb New York.
Dzhokhar: New York?
Tamerlan: New York.
Dzhokhar: .....fark it, let's bomb New York.

I mean, the one thing that stopped them from getting to NYC to bomb the place was that they had ran out of gas! I have to say again what FarkinNorthener said. How did these two manage to not blow themselves up in their own kitchen?

And they fit the profile for spree killers too. Young, relatively privileged males, but disaffected with life for stupid reasons. If they weren't Muslim, nobody would be talking about them as anything other than not particularly successful spree killers.

/I'm well aware we link to whichever shiat source gives Drew the most money
//I just figured even Drew was above the NY Post at this point

CNN was reporting "BREAKING NEWS: Bombers may have wanted to bomb NYC but another Boston bomb more likely". Shouldn't "BREAKING NEWS" be for actual facts, not speculation?

That's why you wipe the damned threads and use anti-static spray.

Seriously, if you can't figure out a pipe bomb, you probably can't figure out an IKEA desk or set up a wireless router.

Surprised these idiots didn't try TATP. It's teh kewl!!!1!!!

Every story you hear about kids whipping up explosives in their garage and getting blown to farking pieces, it was probably TATP. That stuff is wicked. When I see a kid on YouTube using a 20 gram charge of TATP, I feel like I'm watching Grizzly Man. Same false sense of security, but arising from ignorance, not delusion.

Everyone panic!

What lone terrorist are you talking about? We're talking about 2 brothers. The one that survived probably wasn't even the one with the plan.

The Lone Rangers? That's original. How can you pluralize "Lone Ranger"?

What's wrong with that?

Well, there's three of you. You're not exactly lone. Shouldn't you be the Three Rangers?
