It's probably a good thing that I haven't seen any of these and the only reason why I've heard of the T.Ocho show and Kardashian is because of Fark.

Having no TV is a blessing sometimes.

The Soup had a couple of his interviews on last night. The best being Fox 29 Philadelphia (3:45 is when they start on him). Joel didn't even need to comment as the anchors had a field day themselves. I was laughing the whole time.

I think a very valid and real question needs to be asked here;  Is Ryan Lochte mentally retarded, or at the very least autistic?  Sure he can swim at an Olympic Level,  but Rain man could count cards, and probably would have gotten a gold if it was an event.  Is Ryan actually some sort of one dimensional Autistic Swimming Savant?  Because there is something off about him.

As a former competitive swimmer I'm getting a kick out of these replies...

Secret: Swimming attracts athletes who may really like to go back and forth hours on end in a pool. Many of them are very smart. Some of them like and need the calming routine of a workout and are borderline autistic or Aspberger-like. It's a swim thing.

Good God...his PR team is better off placing a life-size Ryan Lochte cardboard cutout or wax figure in front of the camera for "interviews".

It's not about how successful they are. It's about how bad their reality shows are. In spite of being some sort of meathead lunatic, Lochte has like 11 olympic medals.

Missed the point, but it brings up another one. Those numbers are pretty meaningless to 98% of the world and maybe 80% of people who watch baseball.  Just say, a great hitter who brought joy to Cincinnati for a few years and then shame.

You're reading "(worst athlete) reality series".  The rest of the world outside Florida is reading "worst (athlete reality series)", which is what the article is about.

Ryan Lochte may be a sex idiot, but he's one of the best swimmers in history.  The show is presumably unwatchable for reasons other than his swimming ability.

FARK in FL: /pete rose, regardless of his off field antics is still one of the best hitters and defensive players MLB will ever see.

He was a very good hitter in the late 1960s and 1970s, who then shoehorned his way into far too many 1980s games after his ability had faded.  Most systems would rate him as a below-average defensive player overall, despite the fact that he played the easiest positions for most of his career.  He was a hilariously dumb base stealer who people liked because he slid head first.

There was a thread a week or so ago about Rose, that made me take a second look at his stats.  Yeah, end result, I really think he was in it for his own stats/records.  Of course, now knowing what kinda guy he is outside baseball... that makes perfect sense.

He played 24 years.  He led the lead in batting average only 3 times!  Most of what he led the league in were "rack 'em up" stats like at bats, games, hits.  Every other category he was nothing.

World-class swimmers, it ought to be reiterated, have to swim up and down long pools for hours and hours and hours and hours a day.  If you have a swimmer smarter than a plowhorse, you've got something strange.

Yup.  Take the modern-era guys who hit .300+ for their career.  Almost everyone in that group is a very good player.  But Pete Rose didn't give you much value among guys with lots of hits:

1) Not much power.  Lots of doubles but very few HR.
2) Over-aggressive baserunner who hurt his team.  (198 steals vs. 149 CS.)
3) Played the majority of his career at the easiest positions:1B, LF, RF.
4) Wasn't a very good defender even at those positions.

He did draw a healthy number of walks, and he played in a tougher-than-average era for hitters, which is why he still has a 118 OPS+.  But 432 guys have had a career OPS+ that good or better, and virtually all of Rose's value was with the bat.

What Rose did was average that top-500-all-time ability with unmatched longevity and an uncanny ability to grab the spotlight.  He's the Nolan Ryan of position players.  Both were great guys to have on your team-- the ability to stay healthy and compete year after year is a very valuable and scarce commodity.  But even at their peaks, they were never among the game's all-time greatest.  And most people remember the one thing they did really well (slap hits; strikeouts) while forgetting about total value (creating runs; preventing runs).

Heck, I doubt Rose was ever clearly the best guy on his own team, on account of overlap with peak Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Mike Schmidt, etc.  Maybe during his early Reds years.

I've played at least that many Halo games and am getting close in COD as well, and yet people don't say I've accomplished a lot. WTF, double standards! A game is a game.

It's funny, at the high school level, swimmers are usually pretty smart. It's hard to break a bone or get a head injury, so the smart kids who wanted a sport chose it. Now later in high school and after, it gets to be such a ridiculous time commitment that the smart kids can probably get more bang for their buck some other way. I estimate that sports cost me $8k in scholarships because I just missed the top 5% and few of the other top 10% did any varsity sports. I swam six times a week. My club coach disliked me because the good kids swam 11 times a week. They also didn't have any time for homework. In college, it's similar. You'd have to be a genius to do swimming and a real college major and if you're a genius, they major will give you more scholarships.

But Missy Franklin seems reasonably sharp. Maybe the chlorine just diffuses into your body after a while and sterilizes your brain, and she's still too young. (Would that give Dara Torres negative IQ?)

Based on the interviews that Lochte gave during the Olympics, I have come to the conclusion that the boy is about as sharp as a sack of wet mice.

2013-04-25 04:20:11 PM
Local swim team was supposed to have Lochte come do a clinic and be their end-of-season banquet speaker. Farker never showed up. Supposedly Lochte's agent and the team's coach went to get him at the airport and he didn't get off the plane. No contact whatsoever.

Dude is an epic douchebag.

TommyJReed: Because there is something off about him.

Every interview I've seen, he's honestly borderline retarded, like someone couldn't even coach him to act normal for 2 minutes. My guess is that someone said, "Hey, we'll make a reality show so everyone watching will feel better about themselves because this guy is such a doofus."

/in a way, I feel sorry for him

I think my memory is losing its edge as I get older, because I watched most of the Olympic swimming events, but when I read the article, for about three seconds I thought to myself "Who is Ryan Lochte?", and not in the Fark way that is usually meant.

OPS is overly harsh on Rose because of how dreadful he was in the 80s when he was hanging on to catch
Cobb. His best were in the 150s and he had 11 years at 120+. That half of his career is borderline HoF on its own. He was th best Red in  68, 69 and maybe 71. After that, there's no shame in being second best to Bench and Morgan, who are each in the top 2 or 3 in their position all ime.

I could see the savant angle, but I watched the show with my girl and we both got the strongest "fake friends" vibe of the people around him. Like everybody is a friend and also something else that works for him. I think he's so good at swimming and so, so achingly dumb that he really thinks that this is how actual friends act towards each other, and not people paid to hang out with him. Look at when he said his idiot "you ready to turn it up?!" to a roomful of people. The response was so half-assed and forced I think they stopped actually trying because he's, as I said, DUMB.

2013-04-25 10:22:00 PM
So who the fark watches all these shows, anyway?  There are about a dozen TV shows out there that appreciable numbers of people say are among the greatest shows of all time, there's live sports, there are more movie channels than anyone knows what to do with, there's Netflix and on-demand... and someone, somewhere, has decided it's a good use of one's time to watch the daily lives of Terrell Owens and Ryan Lochte?  Where do these people come from?

Fark it, I need to start thinking of ways to make money off these people.
