Theaetetus: mayIFark: Theaetetus: Theaetetus: mayIFark:

A better comparison would be car accidents. Driving a car makes you significantly more likely to be in a car accident. But driving a car has substantial benefits, and is pretty much a requirement for most of society.

Driving is essential, but if you say so is short dress up, I won't make sense to me, but that would explain the missing piece in my thought process.

If it is considered essential by most, sure.

Let's flip it around: under your understanding, it adds a significant risk, but (you think) has no benefit. For this to be true, the person doing it would have to be an irrational actor, by definition.

Go to any bar or nightclub and count the ratio of women wearing short skirts to women not wearing short skirts. It's going to be quite high. Accordingly, for your understanding to be true, the vast majority of women have to be irrational actors.
Pithy and misogynist jokes aside, Occam's Razor would disagree that that's at all likely: it's more likely that your understanding on this one issue is incorrect than for millions of women to be per se insane.

first off, I did not say, no benefit, but said, risk out-weights the benefit. There are several middle grounds between burqa and bikini, by the way.

Also, risk-benefit assessment is done by each person. And I already accept the fact that my assessment can be the outliar, yet entirely valid because my assessment is for me. No one needs to be insane for that.

So, basically, what you are saying is, "women who does these behavior considers that the benefit of it out-weights the risk of rape". True or false?

/By the way, since I have found the missing piece that I was looking for (thank you), I do not see any reason I need to continue on this.

Mellotiger: If I cross the street, do I deserve to get run over? If I go skydiving, do I deserve to die after a parachute malfunction? If I drive my car, do I deserve to wreck? If I swim, do I deserve to drown? No to all, right? What a farking idiot. Lets turn the tables on him: he's a man so he deserves to be castrated. He's a christian so he deserves to be killed by extremists. He's white so he deserves to be accosted by minorities. Just because you do something that makes a certain outcome slightly more likely doesn't mean you deserve that outcome. But I hope y'all know that already.

Beyond that - we're all going to die. Do we all "deserve" death? There comes a point at which talking about what people "deserve" becomes an exercise in absurdity.
Inflicting evil deeds upon others cannot be excused by existential speculation about what they may or may not "deserve".

Theaetetus: Egoy3k: A study in the UK showed that 3% of adult males have experienced rape and 5% of females have.

Got a link? Wiki links to this study, but it only mentions women.
Also, the study discounts non-violent assault, so I'd take it with a grain of sault.

Found it. It has some definition problems too - rape only includes penile penetration, so, for example, female perpetrators get a "N/A" in the tables.

Christian Bale: What's amazing is that the University says this guy's first-amendment rights trump everything else. If he were a stupid STUDENT, he would be kicked out of school for "creating a  hostile learning environment" and as such, he would be banned from campus. Why they can't ban this guy from campus just because he was never a student, I don't know.

Yes, in the same way that "people who drive cars consider that the benefits of doing so outweighs the risk of car accidents". In other words, true, and I believe they're absolutely right.

Sorry i won't look up rape statistics while I'm at work. I may be wrong, and if I am I'm sorry but even using your numbers 10% and 25% do not constitute 'almost always' IMHO. I fully concede that men are by far almost always the perpetrators of rape and even violence but men can be victims too and are already disadvantaged when compared to female victims because society doesn't take them seriously. I don't think they should be brushed aside casually.

Whores just automatically deserve to be raped, because they're whores?

What?

Show me in the Bible where Jesus says it's okay to rape whores.

I don't normally advocate anybody being raped, but this guy might need it, just once, so he'll understand just how horrible of a human being he is.

And he would bear some responsibility for getting his ass beat, because he put himself in a position for it to happen.

Look, if I leave 10 grand in cash on the front seat of my car and the window down, and someone walks off with it, they committed a crime, but it would still be correct to point out that my stupidity was a contributing factor.

Likewise, if you get so drunk you pass out, underage, at a party full of strangers and someone does something unpleasant to you, they did the act and should be punished, but it's still not unreasonable to say your stupidity was a contributing factor.

It doesn't excuse the criminal by any means at all, but it does provide some context to the crime.

So what? Why are you arguing this pointless "point" with me? It was just a picture of some very fundamentalist Jews - the signs they happen to be carrying had NOTHING to do with my point - namely, that the fundamentalist extremists of all branches of Abrahamism have similar attitudes toward women, be they Muslim, Christian, or Jew.

I never said men couldn't be victims of rape. In fact I specifically called out those who said that they couldn't be. I said that the majority of rape victims are women, which is accurate. These aren't my numbers, they're the US government's. "Almost always" is a subjective and loaded term, I'll admit, but it's an incredibly high proportion. They say 9 out of 10, which is a majority no matter how you slice it.

Even if the numbers were equal, the fact that male behaviour or wardrobe isn't even discussed when referencing male victims of sexual assault only strengthens my point.

Another UA grad piping in with my two cents...

It's gotten to the point where I hate to click anything labeled Arizona because it's always an awful story. There was a piece on 60 minutes a few weeks ago about a 16-year-old black boy who was railroaded for a fatal fire that happened in Tucson in 1970. He just got out of prison a couple of weeks ago, but not before they made him please no contest so he can't turn around and sue them for a false 42-year imprisonment.

Living in Southern AZ, I used to tell myself that at least I wasn't in Maricopa County. Now it's gotten to the point where I can't tell a difference between Southern AZ and the rest of this awful state. I have to get out of here.

We had these idiots of course at Michigan while I was there, I've always wondered what motivates them?  I mean directed at a proper isuue imagine the force they would bring to a cause?  My first thoughts have always been, how is somebody making money off this idiot being here, surely it's not him, but without cash as a motivator, you rarely see this kind of fanatacism.  With the two obvious exceptions being sports teams fans and whatever cutesy boy is the hot music idol of the week.  The money incentives for those are obvious.  But if there isn't a payoff going on somewhere for this guys actions, just think of the amount of energy he could contribute to say an anti-war protest or some sort of health issue, like walking a 60 miler, everyday. Even taking his need for attention into account, surely he could do some good as sort of a devils advocate, like protesting to get people not to vote.
