Talk about being on the wrong side of history.

My tea bagger mother-in-law blamed the ATC mess on "union thugs". She said heard it on a talk show where a unnamed pilot called in and divulged the problem. Sounds legit

why haven't you broken the law to get your job done!  it's easy!

I heard "Obama did it so people would feel the pain of the sequester. This little PR move is going to backfire!"

We've seen what they've done to the Postal Service.  And you're still surprised?

Governing by "Why are you hitting yourself?!"

even if they were allowed to shift funds... my understanding is that 70 percent of their budget is salaries. it would seem almost impossible not to have some of that getting cut. I know people working in agencies that have low overhead, so they were able to cut the money entirely out of programs w/o anyone furloughed.

They passed it so they didn't have to read it! Duh!

As usual, Congress only gives a shiat about government when it affects rich people.

It was more like "Why didn't you bring it to our attention that passing a poorly defined piece of stupid legislation that was never supposed to go into effect was going to cause problems?"

Hal Rogers needs to eat a bag of dicks.

DamnYankees: As usual, Congress only gives a shiat about government when it affects rich people.

Bingo.

You don't see any Republican hashtags blaming the president for cutting housing vouchers to 140,000 low-income families, which has begun. These vouchers are given by cities to families on the brink of homelessness, and about half of them go to families with children.

There aren't any angry tweets about the 70,000 Head Start slots about to be eliminated, which is forcing some school districts to distribute these valuable services by lottery. Or about the cuts to Vista, which is hurting the program that performs antipoverty work in many states. Or the 11 percent cut in unemployment benefits for millions of jobless workers.

I think it's because the Republicans in Congress don't know about those particular cuts. If they did know, chances are that the cuts would be significantly bigger than what you posted.

Aren't the "Americans for Prosperity" dongsneezes being hypocritical? That's Pat Toomey's group (if memory serves) and they should be advocating for Air Traffic Control to be done by the private sector for the lowest possible cost -- in fact, why not outsource it to China or India? A few plane crashes and the free market will respond.

I'm perfectly fine with this situation with flight controllers being furloughed. It disproportionately affects the rich and business class, exactly the people most likely to favor austerity measures and other Republican ideas. Let them feel some pain for once.

This is all part of the grand plan to get Amtrak's budget back in the black.

2014 is going to be interesting.

What happened to all the republican claims that this would never happen?

What happened to all the people on fark claiming there would't be any significant air traffic reductions due to the sequester, that it was all just Obama raising a big scare over something that wouldn't come to pass? (And then, the week after the sequester took effect: "SEE! No delays! CLEARLY IT WAS NOTHING!"

Somebody should tell those 'protestors' that when you go through the trouble of making mass produced signs that look like they were hand drawn you spoil the whole exercise when you hold multiple copies of the same sign right next to each other.

Well... I was trying to give a body that large the benefit of the doubt thinking there must be one or two rational ones hiding in the closet.
But then, I couldn't name one.
I could be wrong.

There were many complaints similar in nature to what this idiot representative said on a frequent flier forum that I read. Someone posted this, rebutting them and they got cranky and all "I just know the admin is causing this" and "it's the president's sequester". The talking points have been distributed.

I get what you're saying, but its really a 7.2% cut (.637B / (15.2 * (7/12)). In addition, the law requires the cuts to be across the board with regards to accounts, requiring the same percentage cut from each account. Operations is one such account, totaling $9.7B.

71.5% of that account goes towards salaries. Are you telling me that if you had to cut 7.2% from your budget you wouldn't touch your 71.5% salary costs?

Looks to me like they did what any other organization or business would do under the situation, and reduced hours by 10%, which would account create a 7.15% cut, pretty much taking care of things.

But please, continue to call it a hissy fit.

You know, in a way I DO blame Obama.
He should've known better than to play chicken with someone who has a crash fetish.

I'm beginning to think that a large portion of the republican congress is being this obtuse because they have no idea how to do anything but campaign.

The only people they interact with are the lobbyists in Washington, and the only people who can afford them are the rich. I think many of them just aren't smart or intellectually curious to read through a bill, understand it, and extrapolate the results. Meaning the ONLY perspective they have is on the side of the wealthy and well connected. These side effects are blind-siding them, and they just assume they're being tricked by Obama because someone told then that too - and again they don't know what's actually in the bill so they already rely on these people.

Of course, some of them are just evil, not incurious. Or both in some cases. But hey, there's dumb and evil people everywhere - some clubs just have more tolerance...

"I agree this is no way to run a government," Huerta said. "But we're complying with the law."
