Probably?!

Just wait till May 31st about the 2nd inning. I'm sure there will be some feel good bs before the first pitch....

Second thought maybe it would last till the 2nd inning.

Yes, but at least Boston and New York fans will always have "hating the Jets" in common.

Well that's because they're used to winning.  When the Red Sox win, the cops accidentally kill someone.

Hell, I'm a Sox fan but I never got the sense it was an equal "hatred" between the two camps. On the Yankees side, I figured they viewed us as more a mild annoyance than anything else.

When we actually won more things instead of losing them, maybe they took more notice.

Short answer: yes.

Longer answer: Yes, and I never stopped.

My sympathy for the victims of the bombing and the people of Boston is very real, however I'm not going to participate in the incredibly hollow gesture of pretending not to hate the Red Sox.

I won't minimize the hatred between the teams, I want the Red Sox to lose every single day.

Bring it, Yanks.

Oh, fair enough.

I based my earlier comment from the only time I attended a Yankees game (this was pre-2004 and I just started college); just happened to be in NYC and had nothing better to do than show up for a game between the Yanks and...the Royals or some other f*cking team. My friends and I wore our Sox caps mildly hoping for 9 innings of sh*t talk in the stands, but, outside of a few derogatory cat calls, the fan reaction to us was largely "aww, that's so cute, look! Sox fans!".

Well seeing as how it was the marathon that was bombed and not a baseball, football, hockey, basketball I can saftly say we can go on hating the Red Socks, Patriots, Bruins and Celtics with the fire of a 1000 suns. Hell at the Bruins/Flyers game last week there was a fight on the ice and they were wearing ribbon patches for Boston. Lotta love on that ice.

The hate only really comes out when both teams are good.  So, a little later this year, if the Sox keep it up  and the Yanks get healthy again and stay up there in the standings, the answer is beanball.  And I will watch closely for the first person who tries to fight Youkilis.

As I Sox fan I never really truly got into the "Yankees Suck" thing but that made me LOL.

CSB.  I was taking the ferry back from Long Island one fall during a Sox-Yankees playoffs.  While I was queued up in line a guy with a walkie talkie comes up to my car. I roll my window down.  He looks at my MA plates and asks, "Yankees fan or Red Sox fan?"  I just laughed.  He gets on the walkie talkie and says "Red Sox fan coming through".  No worries, the Sox were down 3 games by that point.  I am sure if I made the trip a week later my car would have accidentally to the bottom of Long Island Sound.  Yeah it was 2004.

Yeah, 2003 and 2004 turned it up a notch.  The dynamic obviously changed so the "hatred" became a lot less one-sided.

2013-04-25 02:07:08 PM
I've gotten tired of the rivalry anyway. Since the payrolls are converging in size, Bostonians can no longer decry the vast sums that the Yankees spend. They can bemoan the loss of certain players over the years (I winced seeing Clemens or Damon in pinstripes, but I'm over it)... but the real reason the rivalry has lost its luster is the lack of HATRED between the players. The brawls that still occur on rare occasions are short-lived and are followed by a slew of apologies. Plus there are always players that DON'T participate in brawls, even when others have left the bench in a 'roid-fueled berserker rage.

I want a team that still has that one-for-all, all-on-one ready-to-rumble ethos not unlike that of a biker gang on meth.  Perennial underdogs with massive chips on both shoulders. Hockey players in drag, so to speak. That's the stuff that rivalries are made of.

Youk's gonna grab a steel chair, and then smash ....Jeter with it. Then he'll tear of his Yankee Jersey, have a Red Sox Jersey underneath, and instantly be traded back to the Sox.

Funny, the other night in the Flyers Bruins game, in Philly, they started playing Sweet Caroline as the ref was about to drop the puck during a random commercial intermission.  As they came out of break, the ref and players stood there while the song played, then realized it was taking too long and was just ridiculous and the ref dropped the puck while the song was still playing.  The whole thing was awkward.
And that was the only thing funny about that stupid game.

60% of the fans are just fans, 20% don't care its a night out in town - 20% are jerk offs who played little league ball and believe they know everything about baseball (or their team).
I've been a life long Yankee fan, I've met the goods, bads of every team - ESPN over plays the rivalry, in hindsight i've only met a handful of jerkoff Red sox fans. The same ones gloat "remember that year we were down 3 games??" or my favorite "We won 6 in a row against you".

In perspective, those band of 20% idiots, are simply that - I've met my share of yankee douches and sox. The more you pay attention to them, the more you feed their little egos.

I've been to only 15 or so different stadiums in my time, I wish I had more money to see others - one thing is in common - people love baseball - if you seek out the right fans they treat you as just a fans, just learn the basic rules of not being a douche bag in public and you go unnoticed.

I'm sure 95%+ of the time, when someone says "I hate NYC", they really mean "I hate the Yankees/Knicks/Rangers, etc".

If someone honestly hates NYC for the city itself, then it means they're a f*cking moron who probably couldn't be bothered to do even a modicum of research when they visited and just gawked at bright things in Times Square and got bumped into a few times because they stood still for too long. NYC is huge and there's more than one thing to do for anyone's likes.

I don't necessarily want to move there anytime soon either, but I have a blast when I go every time.

That is a scary rivalry. When I lived in SF for a few years, I went to a Giants-Dodgers game at AT&T Park. It was my first time at the stadium so I took some time after the game to walk around the outfield concourse, and saw approximately half a dozen straight-up fights happening between opposing fans. It was ridiculous.

Makes Cubs and White Sox/Cardinals fans seem like relative best friends.

2013-04-25 03:25:23 PM
The Red Sox?  I'm largely indifferent to them.  Their fans?  Well let's put it this way, their fans chant "Yankees Suck" at games between the Red Sox and the Royals.  They chant "Yankees Suck" at Bruins games. The Yankees are their world.  Sad, really.

Same. I have friends that live/lived there, and have had an awesome friggin time every time I've gone. I love having all those people around at all times, and stuff going on at all times, and just the big city feel. But I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for a POS hole-in-the-wall apartment somewhere. It was bad enough in SF.

FWIW, there's been so many stories about Dodgers fans that for the longest time, I just assume Giants fans were absolute saints in comparison. Oh, I get that too, but again, most reasonable "I prefer to live in the country" people can appreciate a big city for what it is; enjoy a view plays or concerts over a weekend, then just go home and live their lives without telling all their friends and coworkers how ZOMG ITS SO SCARY AND THE PEOPLE ARE RUDE

I wouldn't necessarily call it a soft spot from me, but I think they ended up with a bad deal after having all that promise with Wright and Reyes and signing Beltran and Santana, etc...
And the point was that since the Mets ended up with no rings from that core, no one associated with the Yankees could claim themselves a victim of anything.  Unless we're talking about Brosius and the ugly stick.  Zing.

steve_wmn: Gunny Highway:

What is it about NY that you dont like?  I have never understood it.

Boston has all these nicknames for itself, like the Athens of America, the Hub of the Universe, and so on.  Deep down inside where they don't want to admit it Bostonians know there is a real Hub of the Universe and it's a 4 hour drive (if you're lucky) on I-95 to get there.

I have never heard those nicknames and I have lived in New England my entire life and Boston for 3 years now.

And you wouldnt take 95 to get from Boston to NYC.

Absolutely.  The Mass Pike to 84, then 91-S to the Merritt would be the way to go.

Sports hate can be healthy and gives some life to the game, any game really.

But I leave the car tipping / drunk bleacher fighting in front of the kids / daddy gets arrested anger to the douchebags and asshats who can't process in their neanderthal brains that it's a game. Win or lose, you won't get any special treatment for "your" team winning a pennant.

Why not? I never want to miss the pristine views of luxurious Bridgeport, CT.

As a random aside, even though they moved to Brookyln, I can't muster any hate for the Nets. I actually feel pity for a team that is carrying Joe Johnson's contract and has a 7'0 starting center who somehow only gets 5 rebounds a game. Seriously Lopez, at that height you should have at least a gravitational pull that nets you 8 rebounds/game by sheer accident.

Nahh, just wasting time until quitting time. Which is now.

It's all in fun, and it's times like these(just like after 9/11) that remind us that it is a game, and that no matter how heated the rivalry gets, it's still just a game.

It doesn't matter how hard they try. Once the number 27 (for now) shows up, all arguments are rendered invalid.

It really is like cats playing with caught mice. Too easy.

I think a basketball rivalry is good for the city.  I like Brook but you are right.  And Joe Johnson is a terrible contract.

It is good to see both teams playing good ball at the same time though.

Killer Cars: Yanks_RSJ: I won't minimize the hatred between the teams, I want the Red Sox to lose every single day.

Sox fans!".

There are 2 distinct eras in Red Sox/Yankees rivalry: pre-2004, and the Modern Era. The 2004 ALCS gave the Yankees something the Sox had for 86 years.

BAGGAGE.

2004 also gave a sense of parity to the rivalry. Yankees fans can crow about 27 World Series victories all they want...all a Boston fan has to say is "2004" and the tonal shift in the conversation is staggering...

Yes, a "sense" of parity is the right way to put that.  But the scale is still tipped heavily in our favor, and let's be honest, if the Red Sox ever blew a 3-0 lead there would be 1000 books released within a week to celebrate their misery.

And I genuinely despise the "27 rings" argument.  I'll gladly point out the five celebrations I've enjoyed since my senior year in HS, though.

And we've also got the "18-1" card to play if the discussion turns to the NFL.  Plus the other time NY beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl.  So, you know, we're okay.

Gunny Highway: SirEattonHogg: Sure, I have sympathy for the city.  Why should that translate into any liking of the Red Sox?  Give me a break.

All I need to do to dislike the Red Sox is just watch the Ken Burns Baseball series again and listen to all the fanatical fan BS devoted to the Red Sox on that show.  Bleah, it's a like a frigging religion.

Rats all jumped ship last year.  It is back to being a cult.

Nana's Vibrator: What I don't get is how anyone can assert that the Yankees play victim knowing the Mets are in the very same city.

I have a soft spot in my heart   on my head for the Mets.

It's amazing so many people think that 2004 is something special. With both teams being evenly matched and every game basically a coin flip, the odds of winning 4 in a row are an "astronomical" 1 in 16. And please don't give me the "it's never been done in history!!!" BS, because statistically speaking, the history of playoffs isn't really that long, small sample size and all that.

Big deal. You beat us once in the playoffs. Congrats. Now try not to chant "Yankees suck!" at every single home game. All it proves is that the Yankees are forever ingrained into your psyche. With good reason.

2013-04-25 04:21:07 PM

Misconduc: I've been a life long Yankee fan, I've met the goods, bads of every team - ESPN over plays the rivalry, in hindsight i've only met a handful of jerkoff Red sox fans. The same ones gloat "remember that year we were down 3 games??" or my favorite "We won 6 in a row against you".

Yep, the whole "all their fans are assholes" thing is most often a myth.  Went to a Saints/Eagles game years back down here in NOLA.  Philly fans were all very nice.  And there were a lot of them... they travel well, especially to a destination like NOLA.

Now, if I went to bourbon street after the game, I'm sure there were a handful of drunk Puilly jerks.  But that's not representitive.

Everyone will get the Red Sox and White Sox.

Live Jeter press conference right now.  Pretty much just telling the media he is hurt.  No timeline.  Not sure what the point of this is.  Probably just feeding the media something so they stop asking Cash/Hank/Hal/Joe/Yankees about it.

Showing off his tan more than anything else, and since they're in Tampa it's an opportunity for him to meet the media while he rehabs at Yanks facilities down there.

The only thing I've gotten out of this is that he said he's 100% sure he'll play this year.

The "rivalry/hate" is manufactured to get people to go see games. If you watch the end of any Yankees/Sox game, unless it's a playoff or the World Series, you see both teams shaking hands, and laughing it up.

They're all millionaire ballplayers who go hang out at the same clubs and parties together after the games. They don't have hate for each other as someday, they may find themselves on that other team.
