I believe this makes her the greatest pop star in the history of forever. The Queen of Pop, if you will.

/ There was nobody famous in pop music before that, right?

I can't, either.

Granted, that goes for most #1 songs lately.

I was going to ask if I were 10 years old again would I be able to name them all.  Not that you and I are the center of the music consumer universe, but this all seems like an insignificant accomplishment.

It's actually a beautiful thing that technology and music have fragmented the market to the point that you can  immerse yourself in your own niche musical world and avoid being completely inundated and beaten over the head with today's version of Color Me Badd, Winger or Gerardo.

doesn't matter though.  #1s on the pop charts mean nothing these days, although they did used to mean something.  in 50 years, people will still remember elvis presley as the king of rock and roll, but if anyone remembers rihanna at all in 50 years, it will be as just another pop singer like katy perry or nikki minaj or something.  she might have the most hit songs right now, but her music is still disposable and unremarkable as far as pop music is concerned.

Just like 90% of the #1's from 50 years ago. Don't pretend the vast majority of pop music hasn't always been tripe.

Some band called the Beatles had 20 #1's.  Of course, they were piddly #1's on the Hot 100, not the new-and-shiny "Pop Songs Radio Airplay Chart", so I guess that doesn't count for Subby.

She was tied with Elton John before. But, that's where the comparison pretty much ends. He's got soundtracks to block-buster movies to his credit. She's got... a b-lister part in a Hollywood bastardization of a classic game that nobody plays anymore. He writes and performs all his music, and can do an entire show solo with a piano if he chooses. She's got... skimpy outfits.

And bruises.

Hey guys! I just became the first person to have 11 #1 songs on the piece of paper I just taped up to my cubicle wall!

Remind me again why I'm supposed to care that someone got their name on a list that's bought and paid for by her financial backers?  I bet she wins a lot of awards at her employer's music award show, too.

Billboard is having a hard time trying to remain relevant. They keep changing their methodology for charting as technology changes. As a result making comparisons with past charting is becoming an apples and oranges cluster.

One or two conglomerates owns every "pop" station and dictates the same things get played over and over, and they're incentivized to play certain artists...there's no consumer input on these charts, it's just airplay stats and those minutes are bought and paid for by record companies. I don't know why anyone would celebrate "most songs being shoved down peoples' throats because they had a huge marketing budget" as if that was a musical accomplishment.

2013-04-25 02:25:23 PM
Well, to be honest, there really hasn't been a lot of competition over the last 20 years (at least) or so.

Also, considering most of her #1's stayed for only 1-3 weeks... I assume that chart churns out "number ones" like crazy.

Kinda like how SoundScan totally changed the main albums chart back in the 1990's.  Everyone was debuting at #1, when that used to be an absolute rarity.

She had one called Umbrellas, ostensibly about foul weather, and she had another called Whips and Chains, but I only know about that one because they were making fun of it on a morning show I listen to. The other 8 are probably random assortments of bass beats, a drum machine, and synth riffs and feature her "singing" aka doing her best impression of a raped seagull.

Hot 100 (aka the REAL Billboard Chart) this week:

1. Pink - Just Give Me a Reason
2. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - Can't Hold Us
3. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - Thrift Shop
4. Bruno Mars - When I Was Your Man
5. Psy - Gentleman
6. Rihanna - Stay
7. Justin Timberlake - Mirrors
8. Justin Timberlake - Suit and Tie
9. Pitbull - Feel This Moment

14. Florida Georgia Line - Cruise
15. Fall Out Boy - My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light 'em Up)
16. Lil Wayne - Love Me
17. Baauer - Harlem Shake
18. Maroon 5 - Daylight
19. Daft Punk - Get Lucky
20. Darius Rucker - Wagon Wheel

Other Notables:

23. fun. - Carry On
24. Taylor Swift - 22
25. Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble
26. The Lumineers - Ho Hey
30. Bruno Mars - Locked Out of Heaven

And Auto-tune, just like the majority of performers today.  It's why I will only buy concert tickets to old stars that get no air time.  One of my kids was given tickets to her favorite performer, and the entire show was lip-synced, and replays of videos.  We could have stayed home and gotten just as much real music as we did at that nonsense.

But the top 100 poops of the week (or year) would be more interesting, entertaining, and of higher aesthetic value than her entire oeuvre.

Rihanna music is godawful, and since she went back to Chris Brown she sucks as a person. She deserves zero sympathy.
