Brown, Payton, and Sanders are on a seperate level with Sayers just under them I think.

Hard to separate the top three, though Payton and Sanders had a much better running style than Brown, who was just a man among boys.

Sorry, order is wrong. Put Walter at the top.
Brown was good, but had the advantage of playing in a different era with smaller people tackling him.

If you want a pure runner, it's Sanders.

If you want the guy who changed the game, Brown.

But if you want the best all-around player it's Payton. He spent the first half of his career making a passable football team out of a complete shiat sandwich of an offense. If you gave Payton the quarterbacks, lines and receivers that Sanders or (especially) Emmitt Smith worked with, he'd have run for 22,000 yards.

Crappy teams but you have to admit, Megatron and Barry were two amazing players.

/who played for terrible, terrible teams.

2013-04-25 11:07:02 AM
Sanders was great and probably the most fun to watch, but he had a lot of negative yardage plays and wasn't as much of a receiving threat as you'd expect from a player of his profile (like, say, Marshall Faulk).  For greatest of all time I'd pick Payton or Brown.

2013-04-25 11:12:03 AM
Walter is the best... He did it all wearing Roos for Christs sake.

/Destroyed my shoulder for real in a football game thinking I could emulate Walter.

2013-04-25 11:19:54 AM
Good call, he would have broken Walter Payton's records if he would have kept playing. Heck, playing an entire career for the Lions should be a big deal in itself. I know Jason Hanson played 21, maybe 22 years with them, and I am sure he is the last person to have played with Barry Sanders.

2013-04-25 11:21:58 AM
Walter Payton, Jim Brown, Gale Sayers. These guys were the best at the position of course. But they all did things other players could do. Barry ran like nobody before or since. It was magic, I miss watching him play.

Sanders was actually supposed to be the original Madden cover boy.

Then he retired.

The cover went to Garrison Hearst.

The drunkest I ever got was the night I acquired him on my fantasy football team.  He was perhaps a five year veteran at the time.  I think the other guy was more drunk than I, because #20 only cost me Ricky Ervins.  What a great farking night.  Thanks for the memories Barry.

um...as a life long lions fan, im confused by the mention of "quaterbacks, lines, and receivers" that sanders had... is the QB you are referring to Scott "stone shoes" Mitchell, Andre "i won the heisman" Ware, or maybe Rodney "my wife is hot" Peete?  Other than lomas brown and herman moore.....wow, those teams sucked.  Sanders was really the only good player on those teams.  Throw in wayne fontes as a coach and we got ourselves a game.

jdetweiler: um...as a life long lions fan, im confused by the mention of "quaterbacks, lines, and receivers" that sanders had...

Seriously. One of the reasons he would end up losing so much yardage at times was because the defense was 5 yards into the backfield before the ball was handed off. Heck, the fact that he was still able to accomplish what he could with that poor excuse for a "line"  makes it that much more impressive.

/Emmitt was a better *all-around* back, but a far worse *running* back

Barry Sanders and Michael Jordan, the members of the club of "Possibly (or probably) the best ever at their sport, yet they're STILL overrated" athletes.

What was it about the '90s? Is it just that these were the guys around when people started watching their sports?

To hear fanboys talk about either of these two, Sanders was running plays all by himself on the field and consistently beating teams 70-63 or losing 70-77 (because apparently the defense was ALWAYS terrible, too), and Jordan averaged 90% from the field, 100% in game-winners, and won a title every year he was in the league (because he just wanted it more).

That noise you hear is the sound of my eyeballs hitting the back of my skull ...

.342 average AND 714 home runs?  Higher OPS and WAR if you're a SABR guy?  (And the useless but fun fact that he can pitch if you need it...)

This is a football thread so I'll refrain from digging further into this and transition back to football.

So if we live in a world where Theismann's leg WAS catastrophically broken, AND where the Madden curse can be retroactive...we know that at sometime in the future Theismann will be put on the cover of Madden.
