Occasionally dangerous stuff blows up, news at 11.

This is looking accidental - one explosion probably set off the next and so on.

Third and fourth explosions reported in natural gas lines. Part of Austal, AL evacuated. Fire Dept is letting it burn, it's too unstable.

For some of you, your news aggregator website addiction mixed poorly with the excessive Boston coverage. Now some boobies seem to be overexposed and you are jumping at your own shadows.  Take a week off from the news, you can come back fresh in May.

Ringshadow: I said it before. I'll say it again.

If your industry has the ability to do massive damage to yourself/the surrounding area/civilians, you should be regulated as hard as nuclear power is now.

I'll sign a petition to that effect, Ringshadow, although I'd still be wary: someone from the GOP drown-the-government crowd would flip your proposition around and say "Fine, I'm against regulations on coal mines / fertilizer plants / natural gas, therefore here's my legislation removing regulations on the nuclear power industry."

"OK, fine, we can still require lighted 'Exit' signs."

Okay, from now on, NO ONE leave anything flammable south of the Mason-Dixon line!

Elegy: Uh, the heavy industry in Mobile is already regulated. They have their own industrial zone down by the water, away from schools and nursing homes and everything.

This injured the 3 crew, but it's going to end up being nothing more than a big fireworks show for the locals in terms of damage.

"As hard as nuclear power is now." Or did you miss that?

Because I've talked to a lot of people working nuclear power who came out of chemical and fossil and they generally don't want to go back for reasons relating to safety.

Haliburton Cummings: who are you talking to?

It's a generic statement. No one in particular.

Huck And Molly Ziegler: I'll sign a petition to that effect, Ringshadow, although I'd still be wary: someone from the GOP drown-the-government crowd would flip your proposition around and say "Fine, I'm against regulations on coal mines / fertilizer plants / natural gas, therefore here's my legislation removing regulations on the nuclear power industry."

Or an accident? Possibly negligence? Must every bad thing be terrorism? That word is beginning to lose it's punch.

Carnival Triumph, in Mobile's port undergoing repairs, was evacuated, and spectators were asked to move away from the waterfront.

There's your problem.

Goddammit, did Carnival piss off some gypsies or something?

It gets worse when you consider that cursed ship broke it's moorings and went floating around the bay just three weeks ago.

Did you notice in this article that there were already one missing person from when a guard shack mysteriously 'blew over' earlier in the month.  It is starting to sound like they are filming Lethal Weapon 6 there.

buzzcut73: Wireless Joe: Whatever it is, I credit small government and their refreshing lack of regulation.  We'll probably find out the barges were carrying 1,350 times the natural gas that would normally trigger safety oversight by the US Dept. of Homeland Security.

Oh, I'm sorry...the were already under DHS (Coast Guard) oversight by way of being a vessel that transported HAZMAT.
Really, just being a commercial vessel gets you Coast Guard inspections from time to time. One that hauls gas, even more often.

As far as West, TX goes, DHS oversight would have included: Is the fence high enough? Is the facility locked at night? Do they have adequate security in place? Nothing about proper storage and fire prevention in there.

I'll be interested to see what becomes of both investigations though.

You left out the requirement that openings in the fence be no more than 1.5" across, and 10 pages of documentation on the training process for fence installers. (most of it reading "all work and no play...")

Most of the actual regulation of how close you can put things like residences to catastrophic hazards (West, TX), or long-term hazards (any of the 50 concrete crushing plants in Harris county) is left to states. Which, in Texas, means you're basically f*cked.

TyrantII: What the hell is a natural gas barge?

I hope to God not.  There's really no reason to ship cryogenic/compressed LNG domestically.  High seas between continents, yes.  Barge, we have pipelines.  LNG... that shiat goes BOOM.

I'm hoping and betting that we're probably referring to what are better termed 'natural gas liquids'.  Propane and ethane, largely, with the butanes and up. 'Natural' natural gas, minus the methane and other ultra-light stuff. This then gets refined a bit more for 'barbecue' propane and chemical feedstock fractions.  Liquids at standard temp/pressure or slightly pressurized, and shipped by barge, truck, and railcar all the time.

Is it too early to suggest that those natural gas workers would have felt safer/still be alive if they had AR15s?  Or is there a 48 hour waiting period after a tragedy before it is tied to guns with a rope made of derp?

Thats fairly smug of you to say given that we're just now scratching the surface of the amount of agency flags that Tamerlan Tsarnayev had without any sort of action or deportation from DHS, INS, or the FBI
