TuteTibiImperes: Captain Steroid: Oh, what the dick? NOW what?! >_<Occasionally dangerous stuff blows up, news at 11.This is looking accidental - one explosion probably set off the next and so on.
skremnjava: this April won't quit. I hate to see what the 30th will be like. The Apocalypse perhaps?
Ringshadow: I said it before. I'll say it again. If your industry has the ability to do massive damage to yourself/the surrounding area/civilians, you should be regulated as hard as nuclear power is now.
utah dude: " Mobile councilman William Carroll, who was at the scene, said the natural gas explosions were triggered by a static charge. "
VvonderJesus: Well, frack.
Anthracite: I am going to call someone asleep at the controls
AttawaYawattA: Now some boobies seem to be overexposed
Worked on a barge, and it was a gasSoon turned out, was a farkin' blast
MaudlinMutantMollusk: Freakin April/It's the entire month//probability storm season
April is the cruelest month
AttawaYawattA: Take a week off from the news, you can come back fresh in May.
AttawaYawattA: For some of you, your news aggregator website addiction mixed poorly with the excessive Boston coverage. Now some boobies seem to be overexposed and you are jumping at your own shadows. Take a week off from the news, you can come back fresh in May.
thisispete: What is it with shiat blowing up this month? Can't we just go back to some more traditional mayhem? Like shark attacks or something.
earthwirm: Apparently there is a 3rd explosion. Nearby Carnival Cruise Triumph is being evacuated.
Kevin72: skremnjava: this April won't quit. I hate to see what the 30th will be like. The Apocalypse perhaps? At leadt there is no April 31st this year?
Elegy: Uh, the heavy industry in Mobile is already regulated. They have their own industrial zone down by the water, away from schools and nursing homes and everything. This injured the 3 crew, but it's going to end up being nothing more than a big fireworks show for the locals in terms of damage.
Haliburton Cummings: who are you talking to?
Huck And Molly Ziegler: I'll sign a petition to that effect, Ringshadow, although I'd still be wary: someone from the GOP drown-the-government crowd would flip your proposition around and say "Fine, I'm against regulations on coal mines / fertilizer plants / natural gas, therefore here's my legislation removing regulations on the nuclear power industry.""OK, fine, we can still require lighted 'Exit' signs."
JustGetItRight: LordJiro: noneyourbase: Nina Haagen Dazs: IronTom: It could be terrorism, no?Or an accident? Possibly negligence? Must every bad thing be terrorism? That word is beginning to lose it's punch.Carnival Triumph, in Mobile's port undergoing repairs, was evacuated, and spectators were asked to move away from the waterfront. There's your problem.Goddammit, did Carnival piss off some gypsies or something? It gets worse when you consider that cursed ship broke it's moorings and went floating around the bay just three weeks ago.http://blog.al.com/live/2013/04/carnival_cruise_ship_triumph_b.html
buzzcut73: Wireless Joe: Whatever it is, I credit small government and their refreshing lack of regulation. We'll probably find out the barges were carrying 1,350 times the natural gas that would normally trigger safety oversight by the US Dept. of Homeland Security.Oh, I'm sorry...the were already under DHS (Coast Guard) oversight by way of being a vessel that transported HAZMAT.Really, just being a commercial vessel gets you Coast Guard inspections from time to time. One that hauls gas, even more often. As far as West, TX goes, DHS oversight would have included: Is the fence high enough? Is the facility locked at night? Do they have adequate security in place? Nothing about proper storage and fire prevention in there.I'll be interested to see what becomes of both investigations though.
Pointy Tail of Satan: What we need is a big-ass natural gas pipeline! Get right on that, Republicans!
Brick-House: Wanted for Questioning
Scorpinock: Thanks Obama!
TyrantII: What the hell is a natural gas barge?Surely they don't mean LNG tankers, right?
RIP Large Marge
2xhelix: Link to local TV coverage including video of third explosion while reporter is interviewing city councilman.
