There is something to be said for the natural look of the 1970s.

Lt. Cheese Weasel: theotherles: theotherles: I remember during a break a local news anchor expressing his disgust at the program.

I was simply bored.

Oh, I forgot.

DISCO S**KS!

The Disco era wasn't about the music.  It was about getting laid. Alot. Todays youth have no idea wtf it was like.  I was there, I lived it.  I had clear platform heels with goldfish, a baby blue ice cream suit, a mustang convertible and all the mugambo I could handle.  It's a miracle I A. survived.  and B. Graduated college.

I will have to admit that I didn't get laid.

I tried to find the footage of Mangione playing in the Lake Placid Olympics opening ceremonies, but my YouTube-fu is weak.  He was higher Wilt Chamberlain's 'fro comb.

That's in part 3, right at the beginning.

Local news anchors are supposed to be the "community voice" and therefore have to espouse conservative and non-controversial values. When something offends both the Moral Majority and the Women's Movement, you better completely distance yourself from it.

Anything went  and you didn't have to wrap it in plastic like your granny's couch.
Now you have to wear  a condom.
Oh well look  on the bright side kiddies at least when  your 70 it  will  still look brand new.

Yeah, Mangione's done interviews where he talks about how high he was all the time then. One time he was talking about going out for a gig and some celebrity was telling Mangione how great he played at a Mansion party. Mangione had no idea what the guy was talking about.

Also, Debra Jo Fondren: NSFW and NSFW.

"NBC. Proud as a Peacock."

... Not that there is anything wrong with that.

This is almost as good as the original submission. Grizzly Adams, Shirley Feeney and Dana Plato all doing roller disco, huh?

Mistique books!  Sounds so mysterious and foreign.

Also, is it just me or is Chuck Mangione's head about two sizes too big for his body in that video?

Lawnchair: The Flexecutioner: that opening Contac commercial made me ashamed to be a consumer.  that was an astoundingly stupid commercial.

The product ads, in both breaks, were kinda sweetly-innocent.

It was the ABC sitcom preview block, at the very end, that got me.  Gawd damn that was some horrible tripe.  A show like  Wipeout ('hit in the balls again.. get it.. BALLS') would be preferable.

God, can you imagine if a modern tv exec traveled back in time? He'd eat them alive.

To The Escape Zeppelin!: God, can you imagine if a modern tv exec traveled back in time? He'd eat them alive.

Hard to say, really.  Would the level of detached cynicism and darkness in today's TV sell in 1979?  Or were people producing/watching  The Love Boat and  Dukes of Hazzard because that's where the cultural zeitgeist lay?  Is the major difference that this was still just before cable, when there were 3 networks and 80% of the country was watching one of them live at 8? Programming is way, way different with 100 channels, Hulu, and DVRs.

As for my own horror, I'm certain someone will say the same about  Jersey Shore 35 years from now.

The production values available in a freebie copy of Windows Movie Maker would obviously blast everything off the air, though.

Isn't it interesting that 34 years ago, hot button topics included Middle East issues and American dependence on foreign oil.

Also, about five minutes into part 2: " oh fark, get the black people off the skate rink. They're daning and making us look bad.

/ I would have been about 2 when this aired.

Now I understand why Steve Martin wanted the Battle of the Network Stars to be fought with guns...

(Not that Gabe Kaplan vs. Robert Conrad wouldn't have been a bad fight back then...)

In NBC's 75th Anniversary special, they themselves largely lampooned how atrocious the network was during that time.  The wiki page does a good enough job of explaining what kind of dire straits the pre-Tartikoff NBC was in.  It was probably the worst NBC had been ... well, maybe until now.

Then there's this, which got a lot of people at a certain production company in trouble:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN9wJ75DjdA
