(SB Nation)   The season doesn't start for almost 5 months; the draft hasn't even occurred yet; and yet here's your first NFL power rankings for the 2013-14 season. The #1 pick is indisputably incorrect, so surely nobody here can disagree with any of the others   (sbnation.com) divider line 95

Depending on the outcome of the draft, the top 4 picks seem defensible, though some might reorder them slightly (I probably wouldn't, though).  The #5 pick seems too high to me.  The Falcons really didn't play many quality opponents last year, and when they did, they either lost or barely scraped by with a victory (as in the Seahawks game).  I'd certainly drop them a few slots.

Aye.  I didn't realize that Elway was that much of a dickweed from the beginning.  Also, I wasn't aware that Marino was that deeply mired in a drug scandal.  Always learn something from those 30 for 30 shows.  If nothing else, I learned how some things never change in the NFL.  Good teams make make a decently sound pick based on needs and stupid teams over-think themselves to death.

I do worry about the 49ers.  It seems like they've lost a lot of depth of defense and a few starters, too.  Sure, they picked up Asomugha, but no one else seemed to want him even at the minimum.  Their D also played a huge percentage of snaps last year.  That sort of wear and tear is going to build up.

As for Seattle, I think they've only gotten stronger, though they need to get one or two more LBs and maybe another OL and DL.  They're, in terms of personnel, a bit closer to a full roster than the 49ers, I think.

\those games are going to be good
\\either close or a Seahawks blowout, which I am perfectly fine with

I remember hearing that Marino fell that far because teams thought he was a cokehead/were the Chiefs and Jets, but I would've liked to have known how it happened.  I mean, they certainly mentioned the rumors, but they didn't say how those rumors took shape.

On Elway, all I could do was wonder how "right now they have nothing" would play in 2013 with the various sportswriters yelling at each other shows, lol.  Goddamn.

I watch the Top 10 Draft Surprises on NFL Network and they mentioned about the Marino drug problem as a reason why he fell in the draft.  It also mentioned that Miami (or someone else) may have planted those rumors in order to get him at their spot.

No complaints with the top 3. Kind of doubting the pats at 4 but you can't ignore the cakewalk in division play so maybe they are. I just don;t think they'll do anything in the playoffs once they get there.

My steelers are at 15. Can't really complain - they've earned the middling designation until they do something.

Yeah it is weird how the Marino coke story is only now being openly discussed. Just a few years ago the narrative on his college years was codewords like "character concerns" or "off the field issues" or "commitment to the game" but rarely saying - until now - "cat hoovered more blow than Keith Richards on 72 world tour".

2013-04-24 01:55:31 PM
Not ESPN, not canon for Fark. Not to poop in SBNation's cereal, but why release this one day before the freaking draft even in super-early la-la land? Let's at least wait until each team adds 4-10 new players and a team inevitably overdrafts Geno Smith.

What's funny is that for all that's changed...nothing really changed with the draft. It's still a lot of blind luck. It's still a bunch of "character vs. upside" calls, a bunch of "injury history vs no injury history; which will have an injury in the pros?"

/remember AP fell because he got injured a bunch in college - he's been pretty healthy as a pro
//Moss fell because of character issues (which never really worked out, but he worked out great for Minnesota for several years)

Yeah, that was a great column, saw that the other day.  It's still a ton of guesswork, and it's certainly funny how some teams just keep guessing wrong, no matter who's in the suit.

Also, I hadn't heard the Montana-for-Elway story before.  Jim Kelly openly saying he was cheering at the TV screen when Buffalo didn't take him and then being reminded that Buffalo had another selection right afterwards was amusing, as was Kelly just smiling and saying "oh, those were lies!" when they played his working-the-media comments after the draft.  And Pittsburgh passing on Marino to take Gabe Rivera...well, that sucks.

Of course, I was just watching to see if they'd include the footage of the Jets fan with the curly hair included in all those Jets Draft Blunders videos who says "everybody said if he was still available, the Jets would take Marino...obviously they know something the people up here don't" in it and was satisfied, heh.

I'm only shocked that I get shocked every year when there's 50% playoff turnover. And why football is my favorite sport to follow - just seems a lot more possible to dramatically change the team's fortunes in one year. Keeps it interesting . Anyway, yeah, obviously this means squat.  Though I think the steelers ranking is about right. It'll surprise me if they finish over .500.

You just reminded me that when the draft does come along, the room is full of New York fans who boo every....single...selection, but especially the New England and Philly drafts..  Also trying to wait for ESPN to get around to my team's draft information, almost getting there and then ESPN going to commercial.  I'll just have the laptop fired up this time around.  So..thanks?

The linked article on "worst draft picks of the century" is really, really awful, by the way.

The author includes a QB who's won as many playoff games as Matt Ryan. And, even worse, he includes Janikowski. You're going to have to do a hell of a lot of work to convince me that Seabass was a bust. Personally, I think he deserves to go to Canton. Then again, I feel even more strongly about Ray Guy. How hard is it to understand that special teams is a very important part of the game?

Janikowski being on that list is ridiculous...but it's difficult to argue with Tebow going in the first round, though - massive bust. And sorry, but Ryan's stats are MUCH better than Tebow's.

If playoff wins were the main gauge of a QB's success, Romo wouldn't have gotten that ridiculous contract last month. Y.A. Tittle is in the hall of fame despite 4 playoff starts and 0 wins.

Seabass and Ray Guy do belong in the HoF. Special teams is a huge part of the game.

My team has no first rounders this year. They spent it on RG3 and I'm more than okay with that.

I find the Jets draft pick of Ken O'Brien to be quite remarkable. He was a 6th round pick in the USFL draft, and as far as I can tell, no one in the NFL scouted him or gave him another thought.

Considering that, it was actually quite a good scouting job by the Jets, finidng a Division II player who was a good NFL QB (very good for 3 seasons, good for another few seasons).  I've found some old articles about how the Jets were excited to get him and didn't let anyone know they were even interested, but I would love to hear more about that story. Something like that simply couldn't happen today

It's unfortunate for O'Brien that Marino was drafted after him, for the Jets rival, no less. Also, it was unfortunate that the Jets OL was brutal and basically killed him (It's never good when an immobile QB gets sacked 50x a season for 5 seasons).

The other reason to not get all excited about the "they could've had this guy" - maybe Marino gets hammered behind the Jets' line and is injured and out of the league while O'Brien doesn't necessarily have the career Marino did with the Dolphins but at least lasts in the league for several years and is above average.

Then the Jets look like morons and people will blame picking Marino over O'Brien, rather than noting the actual problems.

It's very frustrating dealing with people that insist that the NFL (or any sports league) is right all the time and that the best players in the world are playing in those leagues. Often it's just like every other job - you have to not only be the right player, but you have to find the right team at the right time.

What if Harbaugh had been coaching the 49ers back in the mid-2000s, when Alex Smith was starting up? Maybe Smith looks like a great QB all these years. Instead he got new coordinator and coach after new coordinator and coach, with no plan moving forward. By the time he was finally above average, he got hurt and replaced. Maybe the 49ers look brilliant for picking him over Rodgers.

There are far too many "What if?"s to actually claim that things like the Jets would've been better off with Marino or the Cowboys shouldn't have traded for Claiborne.

/Jets and Dolphins ended up with the same number of Super Bowl titles in Marino's career

Neither had I, and I audibly gasped when I heard that. Even today I can't imagine trading Montana at that point, even for Elway. I did like that they followed it up with the agent saying that when he talked to Walsh on the day of the draft that he said "No, no... I just couldn't do it."

2013-04-24 03:33:52 PM
speaking of "what ifs", and denizens of the Fark NFL thread have read this a thousand times before, but for those that haven't....

in 2003, the 3-12 i think Cardinals beat the 11-4ish Vikings in the final week;  a tie or win would have put the Vikings in the playoffs.  instead, Arizona mustered something like 12 points in the final 3-4 minutes, including a "force out TD" (player catchs the ball in the endzone, but is forced out before he can plant two feet, the rule no longer exists) with no time remaining.  remarkable.

anyways, with that win, ARizona "fell" to I think #3 overall.  the loss would likely have put us at #2 if not #1.  AT that postition, we took Larry Fitzgerald.

But, had we lost, we, not San Diego, would have been picking the best available QB.  as we know, NYG and SD made that deal.

so how different is NFL history if Arizona (a) tells NYG to fark off and (b) either drafts Eli (i know he would have pulled an Elway) or possibly Philip Rivers, but also never has Larry Fitz?
