(Pro Football Talk)   The Bills are afraid the Jets will take Ryan Nassib in the first round, which probably goes a long way towards explaining the Bills drafts the past few years   (profootballtalk.nbcsports.com) divider line 29

Ok, I'll admit it: this headline made me chuckle out loud, AND it made it quite impossible for me to explain to my football-ignorant fiancee just why I was laughing.

That article taught me our rookie head coach is actually Jack Donaghy.

And also explains the Jets draft choices. But if the guy's an NFL-caliber QB which most people would agree, why would it not make sense for the Bills to draft him, considering he's got familiarity with the offensive coordinator and the HC already? They need him to start right away and that would seem to give him a leg up.

Gonna be an interesting rookie QB crop.  There are as many as nine in this class who have a chance to be starters, but zero who are sure things.  So I would expect three or four to become starters eventually, but the problem is I have no idea which ones.  I probably wouldn't spend a first round pick on any of them.

So, if the Jets were to take Nassib with one of their first round picks, would it be the greatest Jets Fans Boo in draft history? Or would it be more like "It's a reach but thank God we don't have to suffer a full year of Sanchize again" boos?

I still say the Jets need to give Greg McElroy a real shot.

stop laughing. he's a damn national champion and competent qb.

At least the Eagles have set themselves up nicely for the draft. There's no one glaring need they HAVE to fill, and if they don't like any of the QB's, they can maybe do what Pete Carroll did and wait a year.

I'd think they should at least make it an open competition between him and Sanchez.

I'm not so sure "most people agree" on Nassib.

The commentary on NFL Live about Nassib the other day was that teams were "all over the board" on what they think of the kid.  Teams have him rated as a first rounder all the way to undrafted FA.

I'm pretty opinionless on the kid but the variance on what teams think about him seems odd.

why waste a 1st round pick on a QB this year? even if you need one like the bills (who always seem to have bad timing) just wait until the 2nd or 3rd round

I'd laugh, but there were reports a few years ago that the Mangini convinced the Jets to take Vernon Gholston in the first round because he heard that Belichick was interested in him.

It's not nearly as bad as when the 49ers convinced Ray Rhodes that they wanted Jon Harris in the first round...at least Gholston was a decent prospect.  Then again, the 49ers ended up with Jim Druckenmiller so karma was served in that case.

Urgh. You just *had* to bring up that name, didn't you? (Actually, both names, for that matter.) Not that I ever blamed Harris himself - he knew he wasn't supposed to go that high, and he tried as best as he could to justify it - but that boy, was that draft awful. Only Duce Staley was anything close to "notable", and at least Ndukwe Kalu had a "solid" career.

Bills are taking Nassib, assuming no one else does first.

He looked terrible against the Chargers last year.

Nassib is a horrible choice for the Bills.  They're better off struggling with Kolb this year and picking up a QB next year.  Nassib is not an NFL QB.

Being a national champion is a surefire indicator of success at the pro level.

This is what Tebowners really believe.

There's a phenomena in the SEC where playing on a ridiculously talented team may make one look better than they appear. See also every running back and most linebackers.

Because he hasn't been drafted or signed yet.  In a couple months, he'll be an NFL QB.

Wait, what?  There haven't been many SEC RBs who have been busts in the NFL.

At this point, Jets fans will just be relieved that the commissioner didn't utter the words "from Vassar College" during their selection.

THIS.  It's typically the Big Ten RBs who bust.

One of those guys won a playoff game against a top rated D by throwing for over 300 yards and 2 TDs.

because he can be gotten later?  Because there will be NFL-caliber {other positions} available when they pick that they might not be able to get later?  For example, Jonathan Cooper, OG.  Because QBs are notoriously high-risk picks?

He had mostly average at best games at Syracuse against second tier opponents.  He's a good player at Syracuse's level, but he's certainly not a 1st round draft choice.  Not even second.  This guy should be going in the 3rd or 4th round.

If Nassib is available where he should go--ignoring the Jets' supposed interest--the Bills should draft a real first rounder.  Buddy Nix is absolutely nuts about this being a deep QB class.  The guy is trying to sell this because they should have pulled the trigger last year, but they didn't because he was in love with Fitzpatrick.  Now he's trying to sell nonsense about the quality of the QBs available this year because the Bills are stuck drafting a QB due to his negligence.  The Bills should draft a top linebacker or WR and live with Kolb this year, drafting a QB next year when quality is back on the board at that position.
