In this game of massively unhealthy food one-upmanship that seems to be raging among fast-food chains, the only loser is the consumer, and the rest of us who pay into public and private medical insurance.

Sounds the same as Taco Tico. I swear their re-fried beans is just wet cardboard

In my experience, I couldn't disagree more.

I'm not saying it's great Mexican food, but they actually use Cilantro and lime juice with their food unlike TB which is just meat/tasteless re-fried beans + cheese + sour cream in various combinations.

Del Taco's Asada tacos are not bad at all.  Sure I'd rather hit a food truck or a real Mexican restaurant, but in a pinch I don't mind eating it at all.  And their Pico is actually really good.

It's not just Texas, it's is 60% hispanic where I live here in CA and they eat that crap up. There is a good taco joint on almost every other corner, the kind that have menus in Spanish and yet Taco Bell thrives. I live two blocks from a little place that serves menudo with pigs feet on weekends and their menu is mostly pictures due to the illiteracy of the majority of their customers. THAT'S the place this guy gets his Mexican food from.
Don't even get me started on the awesome taco trucks parked on the rural corners in the middle of nowhere.

Ah, I see. I have detected a flaw in my new meme recognition algorithm.  I shall make the required adjustments post-haste.

Look, Del Taco is actually decent for Mexican fast food.  I love Del Taco so I am way biased.  They are my favorite fast food restaurant (though Baker's is a real close second).

That said, like Taco Bell, Del Taco isn't  really Mexican food.  Where I live, there are taquieras on every corner that are usually way better than Del Taco.  Heck, in my neck of the woods, there is a local fast food chain called Miguel Jr's that blows away Del Taco.  Miguel's has killer beans (you can taste the lard) and the bean and cheese burrito blows away Del Taco.

But Del Taco is still good.  I love their Chili Cheese Fries, soft tacos, and bean burritos.  I can and do make better Mexican food at home (my wife taught me).  But Del Taco is still really damn good.

I'm pretty sure they've had these for a while, and it used to be cheaper

Well, I went to one outside Atlanta about 12 years ago and got some basic tacos.  The ground beef was unseasoned - vaguely beefy tasting bland chunks.  Toss on a little lettuce, mealy tomatoes, and about 6 shreds of cheese and put in a piece of corn flavored cardboard.  I needed to put about 4 packets of hot sauce on each one to make them marginally edible.  Your experience may vary....but I may give the asada tacos a fair chance since it has been awhile.

A burrito with chili and cheese... so sort of like a Meximelt from Taco Bell?  Only it's also got fries in it, like a California burrito.  So it's a California Meximelt!

By the way, I feel like I should just have this written down somewhere so I can cut and paste it, but yes, you're all right:  Del Taco and Taco Bell aren't authentic Mexican, and yes, you are superior for only visiting your local taqueria.  But even though I have access to the real thing, sometimes I want the fast food crap anyway.  When that happens, it's not because I'm craving Mexican.  It's because I want some Taco Bell (or Del Taco).

Del Taco chicken soft tacos are the King of All Foods. I would rather eat those - with Del Scorcho sauce - than almost anything else.

Why in the fark would you go to a chain restaurant when you were looking for Mexican food in Atlanta?

There was one right up the road, just staggering distance, from where I used to live in Norcross, that (unadvertised) had "bottomless" margaritas for $6. As in, they carried around a pitcher with refills. It wasn't the best margarita, but the food was great.

Chain Mexican restaurants take all the goodness out, since it's impossible to manage them all the same way due to location and preferences of clientele.

We looking for something fast as we were driving through and my buddy said "Oooh - Del Taco!  Awesome!" so we went.  I never took restaurant advice from him again.
