I figured he was no longer living. His poor family.

Very sad indeed.

Real suspects: 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (left, in the white cape)

Only the Daily Fail would misspell "cap" and make him sound like a superhero.

Poor kid.

I have nothing that I can possibly add to this.

Has he been in that river for a month?  That's gross -- I throw my Starbucks cups in that river...

HOW CONVENIENT.

/jk - very sorry for his family, for real, and for believing that he might be involved in the boston thing because he resembled a blurry picture of a suspect

Or the so called "real" news reporters.

Did the internet super-sleuths ever apologize for accusing this guy?

Having no reason to hold out hope that he would be found alive, I continued to do so anyway. He seemed like a very neat guy, intelligent and compassionate with a really charming smile. I am truly saddened that I will never have an opportunity to meet him.

This.  Really sad.  But at least there is finally some closure.

If he was still alive Michelle Obama probably would have visited him in the hospital, because she hates America.

Being a dumbass on Reddit without any actual investigation experience is one thing. Citing a dumbass on Reddit who has no investigation experience as a credible source is another.

Makes me want to cry.

I never even posted his picture and I advised others to shut the fark up about blaming him in the live threads. However I did post the pictures of two other guys while they were making rounds, but even when the media said that they were persons of interests, I should have refrained. So should have everyone. I didn't even call them suspects or persons of interests until the media did, I just said that these 'sleuths' seemed to make a good case about those two.

Never again. I was swooped in by what I thought was an incredible example of crowd-sourcing but turns out i was just a good ol' pitchfork and torches witch hunt where 'if it floats like a duck, it's a witch' was the threshold of credibility for proofs. farking never again. I'm so sorry and disgusted I ever linked to them in the first place.

Dammit Tatsuma. On political threads, you usually find a way to piss me off, but then you go and completely justify not being on my ignore list by saying something profound. Way to continue being someone who can press my buttons but still be worth listening to.

I'm trying to live in a binary world of good and evil, you jerk.

I think I have missed something. I thought the wrongly accused guy posted to Facebook that "this shiat is real" and that he was going to clear his name. Who was that guy?

Not trying to be tin-foilesque but I thought these two were one in the same, what did I miss?

Mistymtnhop: I'm not really understanding what happened with this poor kid and Reddit. Can anyone give me a brief rundown of the circumstances?

Before the Boston suspects' pictures were released by the FBI, Sunil's name occasionally came up, mostly as a "hmm this kid went missing, could be one thing to look into". By and large, was one of many rumors/theories. The speculation intensified a bit when the pictures were made public, but really spiked when the actual suspects tried to escape, and some utter jackass posted that he had heard Sunil's name mentioned on the police scanner. Everyone (including, to be honest, myself) believed this, and yeah...witchhunt started pretty quickly after that, people posting nasty things on the family's FB page, etc :(

So he went missing nearly a month before the bombing, and everyone thought "Wow, if I was planning a bombing, going missing and possibly having the police and other people looking for me for weeks is just the thing to do before the attack"?

/not that the behavior of the actual bombers was particuarly logical at virtually any stage I guess

that's terrible. So, who was the guy the NY POST fingered? oh, yeah the track guy, what was his name? Sorry, a lot of strands to keep straight in the old duder's head.

Latinwolf: Did the internet super-sleuths ever apologize for accusing this guy?

Yeah, repeatedly. Reddit did, at least, dunno about anybody else.

no, the guy on the Post cover was a high-school track athlete but both he and this Sunil came from Reddit sources, so I just read.

Yeah, that is how it pretty much went down. Also, I think someone on twitter said they knew him and recognized him which probably didn't help. At first I was on the fence after seeing the blurry side by sides and twitter go nuts, but after comparing the blurry released video footage you could easily tell they had different builds, one was taller, thinner.and had a different nose. Plus the video of the missing dude and his family on youtube made it seem really unlikely, They are Hindu vegans and you can't get much more peaceful than that. One thing killers have in common is that they come from farked up broken homes and that missing dude was well loved by his family and friends

The whole thing with the missing kid is really messed up. I also asked some people I know to stop sharing those tweets about Sunil being one of the suspects. Can't even imagine what his parents are going through, with their kid missing for month, and a bunch of zealous aspies who refused to believe they were wrong, harassing them over social media.

The picture of the suspect didn't even look like the kid under close inspection, and I know there's plenty of Farkers who can attest that Sunil was never named as a suspect over the police scanner. I hope the internet vigilantes learned a lesson about the presumption of innocence and ruining people's lives, but I kind of doubt it.

Sooooooo the Providence River is in Boston now????  Geography FAIL from the kings of fail themselves.

\and I'm wondering why I didn't put two & two together last night when I saw this on the news....

We learn by making mistakes.  What's important is being willing to honestly exam the results of our actions, both intended and unintended, and make right what we can and forgive what we can not.  I'm somewhat curious if the "blue bag" kid is a good enough track athlete that some college will try and capture some goodwill with a scholarship.  Seems like Boston College could do some real good and help this kid take bad accusations and turn them into positive affirmations of what truth and fairness can do.  It doesn't take much to turn a glaring example of preconceived notions and fear into the champion for fairness and acceptance.

Well, Reddit apologized but then continued to circlejerk and pat each other on the back about all the good investigative work they did, so it's a tossup.

I'm really confused about this and that stupid, repetitious article didn't help me at all. Here's what I have read:

1. He went missing in mid-March, leaving his wallet and cell behind
2. Family starts a "missing" campaign
3. He is photographed in the crowd at the Boston Marathon
4. His and a friend's picture from the Marathon is released as the "Bag Men" photo
5. He and the other guy are cleared when the real photos of the bombers are released
6. His body is possibly found in a river

So he was missing for a month, shows up at the Marathon for some reason, still not having gotten in touch with his family. When he's "cleared" he's still "missing" - still hasn't contacted his family, and now he's possibly dead. Is that what's going on?

Or was he not in the "Bag Men" picture at all, it was some other guys, and has been totally missing since mid-March?

That's what I'm confused about.

It was the idiots at Reddit who mistook younger bomberdude for him, even though they look nothing alike.

The kid in the tracksuit who the NY Post put on the cover also posted on Facebook that he was going to go clear his name.

"The 'wisdom of the crowds' is the most ridiculous statement I've heard in my life. Crowds are dumb," Curtis said. "It takes people to move crowds in the right direction, crowds by themselves just stand around and mutter." -- Drew Curtis

Troof.

It was a laudable attempt, like a national murder mystery event. But even widely used open source software is not "crowd-sourced." There's the creator, with his trusted lieutenants, who has trusted lieutenants, who has trusted lieutenants. It's trusted lieutenants all the way down. Crowd sourcing.... it's the loudest individuals pursuing the most sensational - or most obvious - angle. Volume wins, not quality.

It was a laudable attempt. There were a lot of reasons it didn't work here. But hey, don't know until you try.

The photograph from the marathon was not Sunil, it was the bombers.  Reddit and others took a slight resemblance and smeared this kids name with the accusation he was the bomber.
Really sounds like the kid killed himself(or met with a fatal accident) shortly after he left his apartment in March.

Second article this week where the Daily Mail got Rhode Island and Massachusetts confused. I get that most Americans do... but you'd think they'd put the three seconds into Google before publishing their article. Providence River is in... wait for it... Providence! Not Boston. Lumped us together in an article about the bomber's widow earlier this week. Fail.
