Hard to justify spending a couple hundred on a camera when most smartphones have pretty decent cameras. Then again I'm not a photographer.

It probably has a lot to do with Canon taking so damned long to get updated DSLRs out on the market.  Nikon is taking Canon to the cleaners in the high-mpix race (36 mpix vs. 22 mpix).  Nikon is introducing new DSLR models that look to be interesting and useful and in some cases less expensive than comparible models from Canon.

Canon really needs to get their product pipeline moving forward - and no, I am not talking about the entry level T{something}i models.

Agreed. They've stumbled in the mid range DSLR segment while Nikon and other brands keep rolling new products out. I'm sitting here waiting, trying to decide whether to buy a 3+ year old technology 60D or keep waiting for a 70D, which has now been delayed to a summer/fall announcement.

I just looked it up and the 7D is 4 years old? Damn, Canon.

Hue know, they just need to saturate the market.

They've spent a lot of time refining Digital Cinema with the EOS C-500 down to the 100.  I think after NAB this year they are going to have a lot more folks looking at that line to shoot movies with - especially indie guys who don't want to deal with the cumbersom aspect of shooting video on a DSLR and can't afford an Arri Allexa.

And really?  Phones?  Great, so your new iPad min has a 400 googapixel chip!  That's an awesome image coming through a piece of plastic lens that's as big as my pinky fingernail.

Sticking with my 7D for the time being because I got a C300 last year for video, and my 7D still takes great pictures.

Getting ready to buy a Mark 2 (now that the mark 3 is out, the price of Mark 2 bodies is no longer insane).

BUT, I'm running out of space on my raid array, so need to build some sort of external storage system. Because otherwise I won't have the space needed to store full frame RAWs.

I also need to toss my digital only lenses (maybe along with my 20d). In a pinch I can use my 100mm macro on the mark 2 for a while.

Is Canon even in the micro four thirds market yet? That seems to be where cameras are going with Panasonic and Olympus leading the charge of lower prices cameras with nice lenses that shoot great jpegs.

I just got a Panasonic Lumix G5 that I really like. It takes great photos and isn't 30 pounds like a DSLR

I'll fix it right before I need to use it for something.

60 d here.

bought it exclusively to shoot 1080 hd video through a lens so the image is easier to shape (hope that makes sense).

the $100 fixed 50mm lens amazes me.  one hundred dollars.

can anyone recommend a good fish eye option?

If you have the cash, I'm pretty happy with my Drobo. Expensive, but essentially once it's set up, you forget about it.

Or you could be ruthless with your RAWs and convert to DNG. Keep your best as lossless, convert the keepers to "lossy DNG" and bin the rest. Lightroom 5 looks like it has a lot going on in this area.

Why would they ever go into the micro four thirds market? That's strictly Panasonic and Olympus. If you mean mirrorless interchangeable lens camera market, everyone is already there; Sony with their NEX line, Nikon with their 1 series and Canon with the EOS-M cameras. Pentax has their K-01 and also their Q series. Leica, Fuji and even Samsung have their own, as well.

That category isn't strictly about lower priced cameras (in fact a lot of them cost more than the entry level DSLRs); it's more about being able to make the cameras smaller because there's no optical viewfinder and mirror box.
