Fix seamanship

As a person with hands I am OK with this but I worry about the feelings of the people who are missing one or both of their hands.  "Handwriting" will make them feel bad every time they say it.

2013-04-24 07:55:07 AM
I fail to see how this is stupid, subby. If there is an easy, gender-neutral way to rephrase something, I'm all for it. I'm happy with "fire fighter" rather than "fireman" for example. I fail to see your problem here.

Clearly biased against the handless.

Sennadar1: Cursive writing is as dead as the fountain pen.

This. I went to Catholic school in the early 60s, when "penmanship" was actually a report-card grade. I did magnificently. Today, I'm so out of practice that I can barely write my name, even when sober.

I'm glad Washington state has managed to balance it's budget and cure all social ills so that they had the time and resources for this.

I would like to congratulate all the people who like to whine about "political correctness". You have actually managed to become more trivial and annoying than those who insist upon it.

It was called penmanship there?

I mean, I live in nothing but derp Blowhio and it was always just called "handwriting" in school.

2013-04-24 08:01:39 AM
They still teach penmanship in school? Apparently not here in Florida. Both of my boys
have chicken scratch handwriting and cursive? Fuggetaboutit. The school spent MAYBE
a week or two on cursive writing.

I remember learning cursive in the 3rd grade - the unit went on for months. I can still
remember the fat lined landscape oriented dittos (yes, dittos - this was years before the
copier came to be) with the cursive letters in dashed lines that you would trace x number
of times and then practice it freehand x number of times.

Qs and Zs always got me.

I think the problem here is:

1:  This is completely unnecessary.

2.  They can't find any other issue to solve with taxpayer money?

Tell that to David Letterperson. Well, you might have to get the idea approved by his personagers. In fact there should be a persondate that all words with a string of letters that indicated a gender be changed to be neutral.

We will go down in personstory!

As long as you continue to never refer to yourself as a Human Being (preferring to use the term Homo Sapien) I suppose I can believe you.

As long as you refer to a "man hole cover" as "subterranean access portal" you may be on to something.

However, (with apologies to George Carlin) when this goes to far, and a "he-man" becomes an "it-person" perhaps, just maybe, we should be thinking about other things.

(Are these gender neutral word enthusiasts all equally excited to return English to its gender neutral form by eliminating the word "she"? (She was added around 1200CE... if you read Beowolf all female characters use the (then) 3rd person neutral pronoun "he"--- but then again, why should a discussion of linguistics come into a discussion of language *sigh*)

FTFA:  Civil engineering terms such as "man hole" and "man lock," also will not be changed because no common-sense substitutes could easily be found, Thiessen said.

How ironic, common sense was substituted for nonsense when they started this project and then they couldn't find it when they "needed" it.

The state likely won't change the words "airmen" and "seaman,"

I think women and seamen don't mix.

It's not gender bias, it's called "English". It's a language. Like many languages, it has gender markers. If you don't like it, move to Turkey, I hear they love whiny pseudo-feminist posturing there.

If I practice my penmanship, will I become a penman someday?

2013-04-24 08:25:42 AM
As a woman, I can honestly say that I never thought about the "man" in penmanship- it's just a word.  Maybe fireman or policeman, but those are words that account for a profession that little girls might want to have one day, so I can see changing those (which is easily done).  But I don't think we have to change our entire language to get rid of gender bias, because a. it's impossible,  and b. it's unnecessary.  Hell, many languages have a feminine and masculine form of words.  I don't see those people changing their language to be "politically correct".  Japanese goes even further by having words and verb forms that each gender only uses.

The thing that's stupid about it is biatching about it.  I can practice my penmanship with a pencil.  Think about that a moment.

However, I can use several different instruments for handwriting.

NBD.

I don't think that's why this is ridiculous--it's principally unnecessary. Everyone knows that. I've never met anyone who complained about it. I've never seen a protest about it, or debate, or even op-Ed.

The stupidity here is that it's another bill another politician passed because of the ease of success associated with it. Like any smoking ban, you cannot come out against it because you are framed as "pro smoking", even it's a ban on smoking in ones own home.

So discrimination is OK as long as it's only a little bit or as long as you don't perceive that group as being discriminated against?
