One would think that, and you're likely right, but then again, the same was said about the Falklands and Grenada.

The interesting part is that any war in East Asia would be a basic free-for-all. Everyone's still pissed at the Japanese; Philipines and Vietnam might get together long enough to keep China from the Spratley's but then they would duke it out. Indian would use a distracted China to push in the disputed border areas, but Pakistan would follow suit. And the Korea's will end up shooting at anyone who's not Korean.

So basically the world's most classic blunder... getting involved in a land war in asia.

Yeah but it's got more entrances than a shopping mall. South America or Australia are the money continents.

Read this a good fifteen years ago, it's not great fiction, but it's written by a BBC journalist who scopes out what might happen in a war over the Spratly and Paracel Islands. Vietnam and Malaysia also dispute the claims and with Malaysia tied up in the Five Power Defence Arrangements with Australia, New Zealand, Britain and Brunei in the novel things escalate.

Why? The Germans are just gonna come bomb it, and then it's all over.

There some prime fishing in the waters nearby or something?

The only one disputing those islands is China. Just like the only ones disputing ownership of Tokushima are the Koreans.

China is using this to draw the attention of the average Chinese person away from the shrinking Chinese economic growth rate.

I dunno. I think it's gotta incubate a little longer. It needs another slight mutation for sustained H2H transmission.

That's the deal though. We want to be engaged with the Chinese before the outbreak hits. Who knows? Maybe all it will take is the kinda misery and unsanitary conditions that war brings to kick this puppy off?

Global war is also a great excuse to stop all immigration to keep the hot zone cooking and we can just tear up all that debt we racked up with the ChiComs too. Plus all the millennial kids will be sent over to die in throngs...

Kind of a win, win, win, really.

Your assumption is that a war with China would not turn nuclear quickly.

In reality, the Russians have a lot more to fear from China than the United States at the moment. The Russians are setting on a lot of oil that's attractive to the Chinese. Vlady knows it, and it's the reason he's Putin on the ritz with the Chinese right now.

You play too much Risk. Absolutely nobody in East Asia is any more eager to go to war than anyone in Western Europe. The most this island dispute is likely to come to is some shots exchanged by destroyers (and China loses that one; Japan's ships are FAR more advanced), before it all gets sent to UN arbitration.

That is what the Chinese name means: 釣魚: fishing.

But it's mostly about the control of certain other natural resources.

Yeah, you think you'll avoid the draft? If we got desperate enough we'd send anyone under age 50. And given how the Chinese outnumber us, I think you'd end up over there too. Either that or you'd have to suffer the Cheetos and porn rations.

This.

China's over-reacheching on this, and the US has agreements to protect Japan and the Philippines if anything goes sideways.  This will be resolved in some sort of international court.

An interesting theory but the US is too much of a stabilizing influence for things to really get out of hand. US foreign policy ALWAYS looks out of US economic interests and a regional conflict in East Asia(especially one jeopardizing the shipping lanes) would hurt too much for them to allow it to happen.

It's not hope, it's prediction. That area is a crucible of densely-packed, unhygienic people. There will be a disease that rises from that area and it will kill hundreds of millions of people.

I don't know, the North Koreans seem to want to fight with everyone and there is a deep dislike between those Asian countries that just doesn't exist in Europe.  So, I don't think the comparison is apt.  China wants to flex its muscles and likely doesn't see the U.N. as an authority it has to listen to, which is true.   Having said that, it probably won't escalate into any more than a minor skirmish, but hey, a good world war would do wonders for taking our minds off this worldwide economic depression.
