I fail to see a problem with this. If you study history, Child Labor is as American as Pizza and Hockey.

I'm waiting for the day they finally all grow handlebar mustaches so they can twirl them as they laugh sinisterly.

"I think it would be a good idea if perhaps we had the kids work for their lunches: trash to be taken out, hallways to be swept, lawns to be mowed, make them earn it," Del.. "If they miss a lunch or they miss a meal they might not, in that class that afternoon, learn to add, they may not learn to diagram a sentence, but they'll learn a more important lesson."

Is this The Onion? This is The Onion, isn't it.

Put 'em all to work. They need to work off all that fat anyway.

From TFA, "If they miss a lunch or they miss a meal they might not, in that class that afternoon, learn to add, they may not learn to diagram a sentence, but they'll learn a more important lesson."

Diagram a sentence? Also, I like how not learning to add isn't as big a deal as making sure they pick things up from tables and the floor. I can see where he is coming from but there has to be a better way of saying it...or diagramming it...

I fail to see a problem. They work a bit, get an actual work ethic rather than being handed free stuff, and they earn something. make them work for some cash too. This will teach responsibility and hard work.

I don't get it... so liberals think everyone including the darkies should be allowed to watch a baseball game without paying?  But the repubs think only the tall and white people should be allowed to watch a baseball game without paying for a ticket?

My kids get free school lunches through a program...

Before he suggests that they work as janitors, maybe should take a look at their rooms.

If you keep them stupid and starving, they're easier to manipulate with the two minute hate.

That would have worked really well in my elementary school where only one kid in the school paid half price and the rest of us all got free lunch. Imagine trying to manage a work crew of a couple hundred six to ten year olds each and every day.

/We actually thought the kid who paid half price was rich.

Nice misleading headline.  No bill written and proposed to be voted on, just the idea proposed.  Still a dumb idea, but many ideas are voiced and never put forth for action.

I'm all for making students do the janitorial and maybe basic maintenance work at school.

Albeit I'm talking about literally all of the students, not just the poor ones.  Add an hour to the school day, let 'em out at 4 instead of 3, give 'em a daily hour of scrubbing off the graffiti they put in the bathrooms or whatever.  Let 'em choose jobs by drawing straws.

Hell, don't extend the school day and just replace gym with "maintenance education".

//I speak as someone who spent his entire freshman year facepalming at the fact that I had to teach my classmates how to paint a wall, vacuum, and use a farking washing machine.  How do you get to age 16 or 17 and not know how to launder your farking clothes?  The instructions are right there on the damend tag!

The GOP has to have been trolling the nation since at least the 2000 election.

There is no way that they actually, truly believe all the crap they've been spouting for the last generation.

2013-04-24 07:31:54 AM
There's a lot to be said for having children clean and tidy schools. It's common in Japan, and probably as a result they have negligible problems with vandalism and graffiti in schools. But everyone has to do it: the idea of letting off the kids whose parents can pay for their meals is equally stupid and repulsive.

2013-04-24 07:32:01 AM
Working for your money. What a terrible concept!!

Grew up in Van Buren, ME. Very poor town. I was potato picking when I was in 4th grade. Dawn till dusk, 6 weeks off in the fall from school to do it for 55 cents a barrel (school started early).

Maybe if kids had to work, they would not be so liberal and the country would do well.

I'm hoping that's a joke/troll, considering it's not just black people who benefit from welfare and their children from school lunches, not to mention that no one is talking about taking away all of the wealthy people's money. That graphic is created by and spread by idiots.

And hey, if they can't add or write, just sign them up to be janitor for life. DO NOT pay them in real money though, only food. Lessons, people, lessons.

I can't wait for the culling of the right wing in this country.

Republican jackholes keep saying this because their constituents love to hear it, as they clutch their SS checks.

A dork just posted something on fb about Texas pushing for drug testing for public aid recipients. They did it in Fla and found it was a waste, but no matter. Comments are full of "ABOUT TIME" derp. Many of them probably toking a joint at the time.

Basically what I came to say.  The number of students who qualify in WV hovers between 52-55%.  The only work you could reasonably have for 'half the kids in the state' is working as footmen for the other half.

/ got 'reduced' most of my childhood

I have begun to seriously suspect that the Republican party is just full of Colbert type moles and that the Dems are actually political geniuses. Poe's law is not enough to explain these types of statments.

Because your Mommy did everything for you.

One of the girls who lived down the hall from me in university had never washed dishes, ironed clothes or paid a bill in her life. She was completely helpless.
