You don't need a degree to be a reporter.  Although, that is probably why journalism sucks these days.

I used to work in the news business and it's been amusing to see former colleagues get all defensive about this survey.

"B-b-but my job is interesting!" I just smile and ask them when the last time having fun bought them clothes.

That's some of it.

The other is that somewhere along the way someone took a blogger as anything more important or relevant than a guy that stands on a street corner yelling at cars.

A comms degree will get you much further in your career path than not having one. Also, journalism is a terrible career. Unless you make it big, you're a piece of dirt and you get paid squat.

I'm married to an ex-journo, those were the dark days. Now she's in PR. It's amazing how closely those two careers align with each other. PR = less stress, more money and no asshole editors.

A big part of my is cleaning wastewater sludge, sewage lift stations, cutting into live sewer lines and being sprayed in the face with raw human waste, installing bar screens to catch rubbers and tampons as they enter the plant.
The stuff we do would make any sane person vomit.  However, it isnt the worst job in the world as I get paid fairly handsomely.

Editor is much worse than reporter. You jump at the 10% raise because you're in poverty, then you realize that you're still in poverty and you can't do any of the things that actually were fun, because now you ride a desk. So you take it out on the photographers, who seem to have the greatest job in the world. But they are actually 188th. (Photojournalism would be well above 188, if not for word editors.)

/Glad I got out of newsapers. Glad, glad, glad.

Upon further review, the reporter farked it up. The graphic has it as #1, not #200.

Maybe it's the worst because there are shiatty reporters who can't write well.

It's not like people jack off inside the store, unless they want to get booted out.

Besides, you know what you need to do and you're going to be needed as long as the store is standing. I would say part of the issue is that the industry is seriously contracting and so the journalist is fast becoming an obsolete job, going the way of the photo developer, typesetter, lamplighter and cloth weaver.

I was a tech business magazine editor. The worst part was fixing reporters' broken prose.  Reading some of it was like chewing tinfoil.  Paid much better than newspapers, though.

I think he's referring to those special adult shops with either peep shows or screening rooms. Pretty sure those places aren't going to be kicking out their paying customers.

I was no an editor. I was a camera guy.

That made me remember - we had an actuary hanging out with us for awhile (college friend of the radio reporter) I couldn't, I don't think any of us could comprehend that she made 5x as much as us. It was unreal.

The manager of a department store hung out with us for awhile. When we found out her janitors made about 50% than we did, we had to really think about changing careers.

On the other hand, being a local celebrity is part of the deal when you're starting out at a small-town paper. I was considered the most eligible bachelor in town and it had nothing to do with my pretty face, and the job was about 50% whatever you wanted it to be.

BarkingUnicorn: Yes. Except for the existential torture, editing is usually the worst part of being a editor.

With the state of journalism today, there's something at least perversely satisfying knowing they aren't happy doing it. Worst job? Those guys on the crab boat could probably debate your ridiculous assertion, as could any coal miner, midnight gas station attendant, slaughterhouse employee, food service worker. Those guys at the fertilizer plant in West, Texas had worse jobs than you do, dumbass. Had.

Yeah, the wank booths have paper towel dispensers for a reason.

Journalism is the only profession where you can publicly announce to customers while at work that you hate your miserable job, without getting fired for it.  That fact alone makes it not the worst job in the world.

As someone who used to manage a video store that had an adult room, I can say that YES, guys did come into the store and jack off while looking at the video boxes. They knew there were cameras, too. They still did it. If a female clerk was on duty, they'd do it facing the camera and making faces.

Yeah, they got booted out. Yes, they occasionally got arrested. It didn't matter, though, because the number of sick pervs is pretty high, and a lot of them would get out of jail and come back a month later to do it again.

/Sadly, women NEVER came into the store to masturbate on camera.

I did the midnight gas station attendant job. In the Detroit area. And YES, it was one of the worst jobs I ever had. I was robbed a couple times. I was punched once. I had a breakdown and quit.

I would advise against such a job if you aren't into being abused.
