The M1911 has a thumb safety and the grip safety. You have to want that hammer to fall.

Funny how they don't mention this NRA freaks name. Oh wait..this was at a church.

Leave it to the church to cover up and protect criminals when it comes to the safety of our children.

THE GUN IS ALWAYS LOADED!

2013-04-23 08:03:26 PM
From the FTA: The instructor told police that he "assumed the weapon was empty."

It's stupidity like this that gets people hurt/killed. Never assume the gun is empty - EVER. At least he resigned after showing he was a dumbass.

Apos: THE GUN IS ALWAYS LOADED!

THIS. A firearm safety instructor should be able to recite the Four Commandments of Gun Safety from memory:
1. The gun is ALWAYS loaded
2. Point the muzzle in a safe direction
3. Know your target and what is beyond your target
4. Finger off the trigger until ready to shoot

It's assholes like this that make the two or three thousand responsible gun owners in this country look bad.

This was incredibly ironic. I know because it says so right there in the article. Incredibly. Ironic.

The irony is incredible. It's so incredible it almost needs to have its own word. Ironicible. When something's not just ironic, it's incredibly ironic, it's ironicible.

Opposing Views. Writing that's so well written, it's ironicible.

How the hell do you "accidentally" shoot yourself with an M1911-style weapon?

Those things were designed for the US Military. They're literally designed to be idiot proof. You have to approach FARK Politics Thread level stupidity to accidentally shoot yourself with one.

Let's review, Children:

1) It's ALWAYS loaded. What do you mean it's disassembled. It's still loaded until proven otherwise, you idgit.
2) Booger Hook off the Bang Switch
3) Point it away from people, places, and anything you don't want to die.

Wait wait wait.  All these people have been telling me that guns aren't as deadly as say, a fist, and that only people kill people.  Geez, get it right, gun people.  It should read:

3) Point it away from people, lest you accidentally hit them with the flowers that come out of the barrel

FTA: "the instructor actually did his job. He successfully demonstrated the importance of gun safety, though the students and parents probably would have preferred pie charts and a cautionary tale instead of a live demonstration. Regardless, the incident served as a lesson that those students and parents won't soon forget."

Nohing beats an NRA approved reporter's spin on gun accidents.  I imagine if a kid had actually been shot, the "soon forget" would have been reported as "never forget."

Well, he didnt actually shoot himself.  As it says in the article he did point it away from the audience.  That said, really?  Yup a gun is always loaded until proven otherwise.

I have attended more safety courses than I can count in more states than i can list.  I can honestly say I cant remember one time an instructor used live ammo.  They always used dummy rounds.

WTF was this guy thinking, especially bringing live ammo to a school?  Sounds like a felony to me.

1911's break... that's what they do... it's an old and flawed design

All accidental negligent discharges happen because "I thought it was empty"... how about checking the damn thing first???

Back before this country was all about me me me me... communities got together at church and that's where community events were held

Trigger lock is going to do what? If someone's too damn lazy to check the chamber they're certainly not going to put on or engage a trigger lock.

Certification standards are flexible for almost anything. Much like getting a driver's license...

I am wondering why he had a loaded gun in a locked case in the first place.  I thought that they should be stored unloaded (even though you are never assuming that it is such, of course)?

Gross negligence and public endangerment. Seize his weapons.

I loathe guns.
Two kids I was growing up with offed themselves accidentally with their dads' guns.  This was 2 separate occasions.  I just believe kids and guns don't ever mix well.
My dad had guns too.  I didn't play with them - and they weren't locked up correctly by any standard.  But my dad did have a stash of Playboy and Penthouse that he locked away from us.  I did manage to sneak the keys or just break the lock when needed.
I believe that if a kid has an inkling to get at his dad's locked guns he will.  It's not like the kid has to get in there in 60 seconds.  He can figure out ways to get in there over months and years of time.  Right around the same time he experiments with booze and pot.
I loathe guns.

/end rant

Reminds me of this story from barely more than a week ago:

Oregon City police identify 9-year-old girl, shooter in Sunday's accidental shooting death

Initial reports said he had been cleaning the gun, but it turns out he was practicing his quick draw. I'm not sure which is dumber.

It's been around for over 100 years so John Browning must have done something right.

gogglesdonothing: 1911's break... that's what they do... it's an old and flawed design

Yes, M1911s break.
The design, however, is solid and time-proven.

The sear blocks the hammer so it cannot fall.

Should the sear fail, the hammer drops to the half-cock position.
(Going off half-cocked refers to people holding the trigger to the rear in order to ease the hammer into the half-cock position.)

There have been instances - very rare - where the firing pin has had enough play to fire the cartridge in the chamber when the pistol was dropped.

The thumb safety was disengaged and the grip safety was depressed.
"Instructor" failed to clear his weapon before he demonstrated it.

This was a negligent discharge.

2013-04-23 09:58:45 PM
This is what I'll be thinking about when I hear that we should arm the principles and teachers.

Yeah, I'm sure they would have loved to sit through another PowerPoint presentation.

If guns discharge all by themselves then we really should ban them.

OWN IT, muthafarker!  Otherwise, you won't own it for much longer.
