Farkin canadians know how to steal booze.

I'm guessing they'll find the empty bottle at Possum Lodge.

I wonder if he's an actual connoisseur that will appreciate the vintage, or if he's just some white-knuckle drunk that just happened to grab the wrong bottle and will just down the stuff...

Damn, I had a sherlock holmes headline all worked up for this one.  Stupid social life taking me outdoors instead of submitting headlines.

Meh it's Glenfiddich. Sure it is probably super smooth but it will still taste like ass.

With the amount of tax included in the price of booze in Canada, that would probably be a $26 bottle of scotch in a duty free.

Well, he's canadian so he'll probably just down it like it's yukon gold.

How the fark do they get away with charging $26,000 for Glenfiddich? Did they misplace a decimal?

$26000 for a bottle of booze is world-class douchebaggery.

/ And it's a publicity stunt anyway

May only be Glenfiddich, but it's 50 year old, extremely rare (15 bottles in Ontario, 50 bottles total world-wide) Glenfiddich...

It's not that it's mainstream, I drink plenty of mainstream liquor, it's that it's boring as all fark. It's deliberately blended to be bland and inoffensive, so as to be as unobjectionable to as wide a range of people as possible. That was an advantage when single malt scotches were still a new concept for a lot of people. You got a fuller flavor than many blends (which is how scotch was pretty universally consumed for most of its history) without the wildness of a full on Islay. But the other side of that is that now that single malt scotches are more familiar and available, you can spend the same amount of or far less money on something much more interesting.

Who keeps a 26,000 dollar (I don't care, US or Canadian) bottle of anything sitting out where some goober could snatch it??? Is the "LCBO Outlet" which was robbed, staffed by morans? Jeeze! So do Canadian jewlery stores leave valuable merchandise lying out on tables?

The header deserved the double tag of FAIL and Asinine. Maybe STUPID in all caps, too.

No because I dont drink Speyside scotches. Prefer the peaty flavour of Islay ones (Lagavulin and Bruichladdich for example) second favourites are Highland.
However one thing I give Glenfiddich credit is it is a good example to use to show what happens as scotch matures. The flavour doesn't change a bit, Just gets smoother.

Who in London can afford a $26,000 bottle of scotch? This isn't Toronto, it's a whitebread middle-class bullshiat town.

I think Frank Stronach has a country house within an hour's drive, but he's too much of a cheapskate and Austrians don't drink scotch. If it was a $5 bottle of cherry schnapps he'd be all over it though.

14 in ontario now, and 49 in the world. If you are going to steal a 26k bottle, you will not sell it. You will drink it.

And does anyone notice the irony of being a snob over Scotch?

This is a beverage whose creators prize it for how fast it gets you drunk, and possibly for how well it treats gingivitis and halitosis.

2013-04-23 10:29:58 PM
The scotch was apparently in a locked cabinet, but I'm surprised there's no alarm or anything. I wouldn't imagine those cabinets are tough to break into for an experienced thief.

The LCBO's policy is not to confront shoplifters, on the extremely sensible grounds that protecting a bottle of Olde English malt liquor isn't worth being stabbed by a wino. They just turn over security footage to the cops. What's surprising is that they didn't notice it was gone until the next day. This is actually one of the higher end LCBOs, so I would have expected better security.

Seriously, this is a people who count oatmeal as a "salad" and who think a deep-fried Mars bar satisfies all 4 food groups.

Their idea of fancying up a tandoori is to "pu' soom fookin' gravy on i'."

Liqour stores in ontario are run by the government hence the term
liqour control board of ontario. Or lcbo.

and that is why ontario still has a thriving bootlegging industry.

nevermind the lousy hours beer and liqour stores have to keep. Open till 10 on fri and sat. Open till 5 on sunday.
yep I hope the guys steals shiat from them regularly

26 grand for a bottle of what will amount to incredibly expensive piss? People who would pay that much for booze seriously need their farkin head examined.

2013-04-23 11:47:34 PM
Someone who works at the LCBO told me that one guy steals like 5 bottles of vodka a week from their store (the vodka is close to the door). But they make so much money, they just don't care.

This smacks of an inside job.
Either the case was left unlocked, or an LCBO employee simply handed the bottle to the man rather than walking it up to the front cash.
I've bought stuff from that LCBO that was locked in the cabinets.  If it's more than $300 it is pretty standard practice for them to walk it to the front cash.  And I'm a pretty trustworthy looking (white male) guy.
Furthermore, when I was picking up something from the special order desk, I was joking asked "who gets the job of moving that bottle?", referring to a bottle of Louis XIII cognac on display, to which the guy asked "What, the real one?" - they had a fake display bottle.

So either multiple mistakes were made, or this was an inside job.
In either case, I'll bet this 50-year-old Glenfiddich is not 200x better than the 18-year-old Bowmore (LCBO 250399, $126.95)
