I knew it was going to be Arbus.

RIP.You know I told you something a long time ago, and it's just as pertinent now as it was then.  Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice:  pull down your pants and slide on the ice.

I think the incorrectly spelled given name and abbreviated surname should have been a giveaway.

jj325: Of course I never understood why anyone watched the show after Frank Burns left

Burns, and early Houlihan were cartoon characters. They were very 2 dimensional characters.  Pretty much just there to be the "bad guys". Charles was as big a malcontent as Hawkeye and B.J. but he was also a pompous ass. He could be kind and generous one minute and an insufferable prick the next. He was a far more realistic character than Burns and thus more interesting. Margaret started out as basically Frank Burns with tits but after her divorce they gave the character some vulnerability and made her human. She had weaknesses and strengths. What she wanted was to be treated with respect, which frankly she had earned. Her character was far more interesting after Burns left.

It's like the character Lililth from Cheers (it still cracks me up that Jewish parents would name their daughter Lilith). On Cheers she was a cartoon character, very two dimensional. Funny, but not realistic. On Fraiser they gave her vulnerabilities and she became a more interesting, developed character as a result.

yeah, but its still not funny.
Whatever.

Friedman was always my favorite supporting character. And the one time he and Flagg clashed, it was epic.

He was easily my favorite supporting character and Dear Sigmund has always been one of my favorite episodes. I'm glad he got to live such a long life.

stoli n coke: ManateeGag: labman: Why do you do things like this, submitter? Did you have problems in your childhood?

no one paid attention to him when he was little.  that's why he lashes out now.

Still, pretty key character to the show.  not like he was wounded soldier #2 in episode 25.

Someone gave me the complete series a few Christmases ago, and I went through them a while back when I was recovering from surgery. It's amazing how many high profile people had bit parts or guest roles. John Ritter, Laurence Fishburne, Joe Pantoliano, Jason Alexander, Leslie Nielson, James Remar, Blythe Danner, Loudon Wainright, and so on and so on. I also thought I saw Burt Reynolds in one episode, but that might have been the painkillers.

Great show, but it went downhill fast once Klinger got rid of the dresses and became Radar 2.0.

BJ's mustache is the key.

If BJ is clean shaven, the show is a comedy with maybe a little drama thrown in.

If BJ has a mustache, the show is a drama with maybe a little comedy thrown in, and you can expect at least one sermon from Alan Alda.

I preferred Charles, actually.  I liked the twist that he was probably a better surgeon than Hawkeye was.

That, and Charles was a jerk with a heart of gold, while Frank was just a jerk.

While I should be sad at yet another actor from my childhood memories passing, I really can't be as 95 is one hell of a run.

RIP Allan, thanks for the laughs

/add Jack Soo to the guest star list that is slowly building
//Harry Morgan too if you want to count his early show as the mad general

No survivors, especially not his career. He left MASH to do the quickly forgotten show 'Hello Larry'. But he does get nearly infinite hipster points for being in Portland decades before it was cool.
