Such a great episode.  I've read the first two books, but decided to just go with the show from this point forward.  I know a few bigger spoilers already from other discussion threads, but the presentation in the show is still engaging.  Dany getting her army was amazing.  Although I am disappointed that it will probably be years before they ever reach Westeros.

(SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THIS WEEK'S GAME OF THRONES)

That last scene with badass Dany, the look of surprise and horror on the Slavemaster's face, and her freeing the army and them following her anyway was amazing.

This was my favorite episode so far, but yeah the probability (haven't read any) that she won't have an impact for awhile makes me fear this may be somewhat of a peak in quality for this season

Yep, she still has to acquire a way to get her huge-ass army across the narrow sea. (I haven't read that far in the books yet so I have no idea how that's going to happen).

I agree this was the best episode this season but lots more to come IMHO.  Lots of things "setting up".
I'm more interested in John Snow and what will happen when he gets to the Wall.  I've been very careful not to spoil it- if John has converted or a committed crow.

From what I know, based on odds and ends I've seen discussed here, there should be at least a couple potentially great episodes this season.  So I'm not worried about the quality peaking too soon.  Although I am concerned that Dany's story may be.  Even if she does now have her own army, her storyline will just feel like treading water, waiting for her to cross the sea.

This is one thing I haven't been spoiled on yet.  So I'm curious to see how they accomplish it.  Looking at the size of the army she has, it's obvious it's going to take more than a few boats to haul them over to Westeros.  Of course, if they're not going to arrive there until season 8 or 9 of the show, they might as well just have them start swimming now.

I guess I hadn't given that much thought. There are so many unknowns in that land. Maybe there is a port or ports they can seize and transport. I don't know. But damn if I wasn't intrigued or entertained by every second of that episode, and no boobies were needed iirc

The dragons get big enough to tow enormous barges, each with thousands of troops on it.

Yeah, as far as "OMGz awesome!" Dany-moments from the book, this was pretty high up there. There's another in ADwD, but that won't be shot for ages. There's a lot of drag in her story that I think Weiss and Beniof will be able to snappen up, because otherwise it'll be like Qarth all over again.

Well, you just have to make sure your adjuster takes all necessary precautions when vetting payment...

I've only just finished reading the third book.  Love them but I do find them a bit difficult to follow sometimes with the hundreds of different minor characters and places regularly mentioned.  Which leads me to my question:

In the book, did Varys actually get revenge on the guy who castrated him?  I don't remember that part.  I remember him telling the tale of how it happened but I don't remember him ever mentioning meeting the sorcerer again.

Man, I almost agree with that. I like George R R Martin's writing style enough that I enjoyed Books 4 and 5, but Books 1 - 3 felt like epic story telling while 4 and 5 felt like daily news journalism about the most mundane events in peoples lives, except just when you've started to gloss over sections of endless details on food and clothing and gossip you miss one seemingly minor detail that turns out to be huge 400 pages later. It got annoying.

That said I'm hopeful Books 6 and 7 pickup the pace somewhat. And I do think his writing is good enough to make them enjoyable. But they're nowhere near as good as 1 - 3 were.

LOL - Yeah, the 4th book is a beast to get through, but the 5th one was better. I gotta think they'll combine the two somehow for the series. You can't have a whole season go by with certain very popular major characters not mentioned at all.

1) count me as another vote for stopping after book 3. pretend it's a trilogy.

2) is book 5 out? Amazon has it available for pre-order. I think what is out is just part 1 of book 5.

I read this more as "someone had too much time on their hands". No way love inspired this when it was obviously mere boredom combined with being obsessed with one of the better shows on TV at the moment.

Subby does nothing in the headline to spoil just what "it" is.

Also, if you're that obsessed about not reading spoilers just stay off the internet like any sensible person, especially stay away from corners of the internet where you know people will be discussing this.

I could see complaining about a GoT's spoiler in a Politics thread though.

There's an afterward at the end of book 4 with Martin stating there was so much material for it that they wound up splitting the content between books 4 and 5.  And rather than just split the book in half, they took all the Dorn content and put it in book 4...with all it's new characters and settings...then book 5 returned to the normal characters and locations.  Adding to the confusion, the events in book 5 occur at the same time as book 4 until the last 100 pages or so where they obviously link up.

I read that and was remember thinking, "Dude, you maybe could have put that in the Forward" so I didn't spend 90% of my time reading book 4 wondering what in the hell was going on.

LOL, no.  Book three (which makes up this season and the next) is insane.  Particularly the last third.  I'm sure they'll rearrange things a bit so that so of the more stunning events are in this season.

All you people that haven't read the books are in for a real treat. As Quaithe told her, "To go north, you must journey south, to reach the west you must go east. To go forward you must go back and to touch the light you must pass beneath the shadow."

Oh, and how to obtain enough ships to get them all across the sea.

Still, if they make it, even the Walkers are going to have a real challenge dealing with Unsullied AND Dragons against them. Bet their little Zombie Apocalypse didn't factor in Dragons.

You're probably right... I am making an assumption that "Varys got it" is being used in the common way to mean "got killed".  I've managed to not read anything else in this thread, though, so it's highly likely that I'm wrong and Varys got the clap instead.

Agreed. It was a frustrating slog. I think I knew what was up before I read it, because I read them quite awhile after they came out. GRRM had already posted Chapter 1 from book 5 on his site by the time I got to book 4. For me the toughest part was the long wait for book 5 to find out what had happened with the characters I really wanted to know about.

If the series producers are smart (and I think they are), they'll combine books 4 and 5, then split up the content chronologically for the series, which is how the books should have been done. I got the sense GRRM got stuck on some of the key characters' storylines, so he just procrastinated until after he wrote book 4.
