Not news: driving with a toddler in the vehicle: 400 times more distracting than texting while driving.

News: This farker watches YouTube! vids while driving, and has for years, and hasn't wrecked once in all that time.

The Farkin Truth: If you're a bad driver, you're going to wreck whether you're distracted or not, if you're a good driver you already know how to manage distractions while driving.  Some people just have no business driving, period but we're too pussy of a nation to single them out and revoke their liscenses, even after they wreck dozens of times, so we try to regulate everyone to try and help them be less shiatty.

This just in: driving a multi-ton vehicle at high speeds to boring for Americans. Drivers demand freedom to do anything but drive the car while it is moving.

Thanks to CISPA your IP address can now be requested and you can be prosecuted for distracted driving.

/definitely have listened to/watched TED talks in the car

This just in: Farkers are data-driven, fact-oriented, science-supporting and analytical, except when it interferes with their personal convenience.

/People who think they can drive distracted are exactly like people who think they can multitask. They can't, they just don't know it.

I didn't find SMS text messaging on a 10-digit keypad with physical buttons that were touch-identifiable to be all that difficult to do while doing something else, nor did it significantly distract from whatever else I was doing.

Smooth glass screens though, yeesh. Can't do anything by feel while keeping one's eyes on the road.

/thinks touchscreens without side buttons are a terrible idea in cars too

Actually, talking to your passenger is much, much safer than talking on the phone.

Why do you equate researchers investigating possible risks with some sort of police state?

Some radio setups are better than others. The old style radio dials are, in fact, as dangerous as cell phones. But then again, your eyes are possibly off the road and looking down at a small needle as it moves between numbers that are hard to read at that visual distance.

The radio in my '78 Cordoba had presets, there were something like five buttons that could be mechanically set to stations. Worked well enough, got close enough then turned the knob until the station sounded best.

perhaps the common denominator in these "trials" are shiatty drivers to begin with.
was there a control group using drivers that were simply talking with their passengers

FTA: "One of the common comments was that they felt an inclination to look down at the screen to see if it heard them correctly, so that could be one possible explanation of why they were not looking at the roadway more frequently," Yager said.

My phone reads back what I say in a text message. I don't need to look at the screen.

Driving with a dog of average hyperactivity level is 1000x more dangerous than driving drunk. I once got a 40 pound black lab on my lap while piloting a RAV-4, causing an accident and totaling the other guys car.
